Heartlife Alternative High[/b][/u]
Heartlife Alternative High School was founded by Justin Petrelli in 2004 after his own bad high school and college experiences left him with various issues that he to this day is working to resolve. Though much better, he will forever be recovering and so he set up this progressive and life changing school in the hopes to prevent others from some of what he himself went through as a youth.
Heartlife School understands that individuals have individual needs and that not all children are equipt to deal with the traditional education system - for whatever reason. The system as it is does not take in to account things such as mental or physical health issues, troubled backgrounds, behavioural problems or learning disabilities as it should.
Many students struggle through high school silently, falling through the cracks. Problems such as dyslexia and behavioural disorders go unnoticed and health issues such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and depression are misunderstood and ignored. Schools put pressure on teens to attend school regularly when for some, that is a very difficult thing to do. Each year, many teens suffer in silence and far too many end up committing suicide.
Heartlife aims to provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment where teens can thrive and blossom, finding themselves and their life skills and talents. Building self-esteem through activities, education and social interaction, we provide individual plans to tackle any individual students' needs. Every student's timetable is slightly different.
We have a limited number of places in our residential campus and students share bedrooms between two in a cabin of six residents. We have regular group and one on one therapy sessions and additional support can be arranged - for example with learning, health requirements or even art or music therapy to encourage positive expression and creativity.
Our belief is that every student has great unlocked potential and that no one is a lost cause. Everyone has a right to be treated fairly and reside in a safe place where they will be encouraged to live up to their full potential. Our students excel and leave the school with important, valuable life skills such as self-reliance.
Students benefit from our small teaching/counselling groups and from our forward-looking approach. We work intensively with every individual and aid them to complete their education. The school system may fail these students, but we certainly do not.
The key to Heartlife AHS is that we take a unique approach to each child's schooling career and focus also on their life and health rather than just their education. Our plans are specially tailored because each child is different. We reward students with positive praise, merits and activities for good behaviour, progress and effort. We discourage bad behaviour and find that once the students have experienced the positive, will not wish to revert to the negative.
We accept children from all different walks of life and tuition fees are negotiable. We also have charity and government funded scholarships for students from low income families. Some of the issues we can help with include but are not limited to:
