VALKYRIE,
CALIFORNIA
the ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
Don't tell me what to do
I don't wanna be like you
Can't you see it's killing me
I'm my own worst enemy
Knock me down I'll keep on moving
It's the art of losing
WHEN THE OCEAN MET THE SKY ,
CHARACTER BASICS ,
you missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye
FULL NAME: Ryder Thomas Bishop
NICKNAMES: Ry, Ryduh, Low Ryder
GENDER: Male
AGE: Twenty
PAST EDUCATION: Dropped out at 18
JOB: Apprentice mechanic, works in construction to pay rent
PLAYBY: Marcus Hedbrandh
YOUR BODY MAY BE GONE ,
CHARACTER APPEARANCE ,
i'm gonna carry you in my head, in my heart, in my soul
ETHNICITY: Unsure
HAIR COLOR: Ryder has a naturally dirty blonde hair color. His locks are usually kept pretty short because when working with machines, he doesn't want the nuisance of pushing hair out of his eyes. It's a sandy color but it leans on the darker side, depending on what season it is and how much time he's spending outside.
EYE COLOR: His eyes are a gorgeous shade of light blue that you can lose yourself in. It's a shame he usually throws up a wall and his eyes are glazed over, because when he lets his wall drop his eyes are quite wonderfully expressive. Sometimes when you get him to open up, his eyes portray the emotions that he never lets show. His eyes are also the color of the ocean that he loves so much.
HEIGHT: 6'1"
WEIGHT: about 163
BODY TYPE: Ry definitely has a well built body. He works out a lot, especially when he's frustrated...which is often. Combine that with construction work and repairing cars all day and you've got some pretty defined muscles. Although he would hate to admit it, he really likes being admired and tends to work on his muscles just for that reason. He loves going to the beach and being stared at or working on cars with his shirt off. He's quite conceited actually.
DISTINGUISHED FEATURES: He doesn't have any man made because he's not really fond of tattoos or piercings. He does have many scars all over his body from multiple crashes and accidents, but there are too many to describe in detail. The most prominent one is a scar that runs up from his ankle to his knee on the back of his left leg. It's from crashing his motorcycle in one of the last races and having his pant leg snag on a gear so that it ripped all the way up his leg.
PERSONAL STYLE: Ryder is all about comfort and work efficiency, before style. Although he loves the jeans and the zip up hoodies, he doesn't really have one particular style. He's not very picky with his clothing and will throw on anything he has that doesn't smell awful. However, when he is forced to dress up for some reason, all the girls say he looks dashing.
OTHER: Usually he's smeared with exhaust and fluids from the cars anyway, so his appearance is stained and blackened.
IN YOUR MOUTH, IN YOUR SOUL ,
CHARACTER PERSONALITY ,
the more we move ahead the more we're stuck in rewind
STRENGTHS: fixing almost anything except himself, drinking competitions, knows cars inside and out, motorcycle racer, attracting women, fighting, being rude .
WEAKNESSES: has a soft spot for kids, excessively violent, bad temper, fears commitment, can't refuse a bet, showing feelings, abandonment issues, he's generally an asshole, craves belonging .
LIKES: women, sex, working with his hands, drugs, sitting on the edge of cliffs, belonging, having someone to depend on, fighting, running, ipods, the ocean, smoking, drinking, friends with benefits, motorcycles, fixing things, working out, solving a puzzle, a girl who's hard to get, driving fast, roofs, wingmen, wild parties, rock music, old cars, bonuses, not caring, being mysterious, women who love the 'rebel', swimming, tans, warm rain, making out, just having fun, graffiti, kicking back, the ocean, vanilla scent, dogs, working up a sweat, punching bags .
DISLIKES: "feelings", chick flicks, not being noticed, cops, foster homes, his parents for leaving his, never being wanted, juvy, therapists, girls who cry, talking things over, clingy girls, girls who are too hard to get, being confused, failing, rejection, nasty hangovers, rich kids who look down on him, being told what to do, those who want to "help" him, pity, snobs .
FLAWS: One major flaw is that he's an ass, plain and simple. Yeah, he has slightly nice moments but in general he really doesn't care about anyone but himself because that's how he was born and raised....fend for yourself. Which leads to his next big problem, he has extreme abandonment issues. That's why he keeps everyone at a distance while he puts himself on a pedestal. By distancing himself from everyone, he won't form attachments and they won't be able to leave him. This is also why he always loves and leaves girls, then they won't be able to leave him first and he won't be too hurt by it. He's an orphaned kid who foster families never wanted...it's no surprise he has issues with people leaving him.
HABITS: As previously mentioned, a big habit of his is never letting anyone get close to him. He has friends, but no one really knows who he is. There are few people who can truly get him to open up, even a little bit. Another habit is violence. He deals with anger by throwing a couple well marked punches. This is why he's in the gym so often, it's an attempt to work off all frustration so that he doesn't sock some pompous rich kid who's sneering at him for working on his car right in the teeth and lose his job. One more general behavior is, when feelings start getting expressed, he will usually find a way to run away.
SECRETS: Many don't know about his sweet spot for children. He's this intimidating figure that will punch you faster than you can think of an insult, but he just melts into a pile of mush when dealing with little children. The reason his biggest fear is knocking some chick up, is not because he's afraid of the child...but because he doesn't want a kid to have him as a father. He knows about crap foster parents, and just thinks about how much it would suck to have parents you couldn't stand biologically linked to you. He honestly thinks he'd be a shit father, but still adores children. At the agency while he was still the oldest one there, he could be seen tying all the little ones shoes and coddling the babies...before partying and punching a kid his age of course.
BEST MEMORY: He doesn't really have very many good memories, but his favorite has to be the first time he rode a motorcycle. He was thirteen and one of the older kids at Bishop Agency for Children, because they hated calling in an "orphanage, had saved up enough money to buy one. They all gazed in awe at the shiny new contraption. The older kid knew how to ride it of course and offered lessons to whatever kid was daring enough to hop on. Of course, Ryder was the first to surge forward towards the dangerous machine. He learned all the basics before leaping on the seat and revving the engine. He went pretty slow and fell off quite a few times, but he'd found his new passion. Soon he was cruising around the parking lot and off on streets. For the past few years, his favorite place has been on the seat of a motorbike or underneath a car. He loves all sort of machinery.
WORST MEMORY: There are plenty of bad days for the orphaned youth, but if he had to pick one in particular it was the moment that he realized no one would ever want him. It's difficult to put a particular date or time on this memory because it was a gradual process of realization. He was about eleven when he first started to discover that he was quickly becoming one of the "older kids". He was losing his adorable little kid charm, and everyone knew that once you were too old no one would adopt you. They wanted all the babies and toddlers who they could raise. Not eleven-year-olds with fierce attitudes. He had been with plenty of different families and none of them had asked to adopt him. It was about this point in his life that he discovered that he was just going to have to wait until eighteen so he could be rid of this hell hole. No longer did he get close to anyone else because no one really wanted him, and if he got attached they'd leave and hurt him. He became ruder to all the foster families that took him in and got in fist fights often at the agency. No longer did he hold any hope that anyone would ever want him, because everyone leaves you in the end.
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
- - - quick-tempered & violent .
"Ryder, use your words!" he was told many times when he got in fights with other kids at Bishop Agency. Then, he just would shout "NO!" as he punched the other kid and ran away again. Let's just say...he's not very good with using his words. Ry doesn't think through things rationally. He doesn't go through the process of: if I punch this guy, it will only cause further problems. He's quick-tempered and lashes out angrily often. If you get on his bad side, duck and cover because he's coming at you with a vengeance. Currently, he works out in an attempt to relieve some of the pent up anger so that he doesn't just go around getting in brawls all the time...but who knows how often he might slip up!
- - - distant & cynical .
This abandoned youth has learned that the only person you have to give a shit about is yourself. He's grown up with the every man for himself mind-set and lives by it fully. He has extreme abandonment issues, and so he distances himself from everyone around him so that they can't leave him. He's cynical about the world and believes that there's no one who really ever cares about anyone else. His belief is that if you get attached to someone, they have the means to hurt you. He never wants to let himself get so open with another individual that they have the power to cause him harm. Showing weakness is one of his greatest fears and so he pushes others away so that he is safe. He's just looking out himself, which according to him should be enough.
- - - partier & dangerous .
Just because he doesn't like getting close to people, doesn't mean he doesn't have a group of people that he pals around with. Everyone needs their party friends! He's a big smoker and is always seen with a pack of cigarettes as well as a drinker. But, he's actually not that into the large group of people party scene. He'd prefer to go to a bar or light up something at home. He's completely reckless, whether driving his motorcycle at high speeds or tagging walls near the Valks, he loves anything that makes him feel alive. He races and is a gambling extraordinaire. He can't resist a bet, so if you want him to do something...dare him or offer him something if he does complete it.
- - - arrogant & lost .
If you listen to him talk you can hear how the guy thinks he's a GOD. He loves to talk about himself and work on his body because he knows it's impressive. However, as many therapists have told him, cockiness is just a sign of deep rooted insecurity. Truthfully he thinks he's not worthy of being loved and there must be some reason for that, so yes he doubts himself quite often. He's fallen off the tracks and is lost in a world of doubt and loneliness. When you're on your own, it's hard to not feel lonely.
AND WE'LL BOTH GROW OLD ,
CHARACTER HISTORY ,
well i don't know, i don't know, i don't know, i hope so
HOMETOWN: Napa Valley, California
PARENTS:
Abandoned at birth
SIBLINGS:
None that he knows of
OTHER:
Convinced he doesn't need anyone
LIVING SITUATION: The Shaks
HISTORY: It is this point in most histories that the parents are mentioned and how they prepared to welcome their new joy into the world. Not for Ryder's. There are no known parents to mention, no known preparations, nothing. His history begins with an overly theatric unnamed woman who wasn't ready for a child. Without knowing whether or not the man was in the picture, we cannot pass judgments about their relationship...all that is known is that a child was abandoned. With a special dramatic flair, the tiny, squirming infant was left on the doorstep of Bishop Agency for Children. He was taken in by the workers there and Ryder sincerely appreciates whoever named him because he loves it. Whoever it was, picked Ryder Thomas and added Bishop as a last name after the agency. The young baby was sickly and tiny and had to be be well cared for for many months. He couldn't even go up for adoption until the estimated age of one. By then he was already showing signs of mischief. He'd steal things from the other tots and pee all over whoever was changing his diaper almost every time. But, his bright little smile was so adorable that it was hard not to like him sometimes...before he chucked his food in your face.
The toddler years and childhood sort of blend together in a succession of foster families and potential adopters. It was hard to believe that anyone wouldn't adopt the adorable tyke but he was was a trouble maker from the get go, which was usually obvious by the way everyone always had an eye on him and was constantly in the "timeout room". He didn't always get along very well with the other kids. He was naturally quick tempered and when they said something mean about him, he'd usually shove them in the dirt. As a young adolescent, he was stubborn and ornery...but still wanted a home. Every kid wants to feel wanted. It doesn't matter if he's the stormiest kid in the world, he still wants a place to call home. Every day he'd watch other kids walk off hand in hand with a new set of parents. Then, the time came when he gave up on ever being loved and cared about and shut himself completely off.
As a teenager Ry could only be described as reckless. He was always thinking ahead to when he would be eighteen and free to live his own life. He was placed in foster family upon foster family in a last desperate attempt to give the boy some positive adult influences in his life. Instead, he screwed up in every single home he was placed. He was bouncing back and forth through houses all over California. Between random schools and houses and the constant change in kids at the Agency, he never really established firm friendships. There were always party buddies and ones he'd sneak out to smoke outside with, but no real close friends. He was a fiend with women and wherever he went was quite the womanizing charmer. It is hard to resist the motorcycle riding bad ass with the sharp tongue. And then, the fateful year arrived and he was finally eighteen. The Agency was reluctant to release the youth because of his reputation and the declarations of many therapists stating that he had social blocks that would prevent him from healthy social interaction. But, the laws were clear and he was a legal adult free to do whatever he wanted. On his eighteenth birthday, he quickly packed his bags and strolled straight out the door. He stuck his thumb out, got in a car, and said "just drop me off anywhere" and ended up in Valkyrie, California.
Now, it wasn't his intention to stay in Valkyrie, he was eighteen and he had his whole life ahead of him! A world of adventures. But, the life of an adult also meant a little something called income. He needed food and for that he'd need a job, and fast. Asking around he finally found some basic construction work that would pay for food and rent on a small room he was renting in The Shaks. He had always been handy with fixing things. Soon he became known as the go-to-guy in his apartment complex if something was broken. He had a natural tendency to figure out how things worked and loved working with his hands. Of course, people paid him but he worked for cheap and mostly did it for the fun of taking things apart and putting them back together. Cars were his favorite. He loved looking at the intricate pieces in the machines and figuring out how it ticked. He had been in Valkyrie for a couple of months before being told to go check out Frank's Auto Repair. Apparently someone had mentioned his knack with machines and gotten him an internship interview. After showing his natural ability to fix small problems and the eager curiosity to learn more, he was taken on as an apprentice. He still had to work at his construction job so that he could pay the bills, but on weekends and in his spare time he's usually found underneath the hood of some car. Frank even gave him a broken down motorcycle for his 19th birthday and said if he could fix it, he could have it. That's Ryder's absolute favorite mode of transportation and it definitely sends the ladies wild. He's a partying fiend and as long as he keeps them distanced, he's pretty well known with the women too. So, now he's a little over a year into learning everything there is to know about cars and he's just a wild child twenty year old with abandonment issues and the ability to fix anything except himself...

ROLEPLAY EXAMPLE:The infamous ski trip to Aspen, Colorado was the most anticipated school trip all year. Most of the time school events were mediocre at best. Sure some of the dances were fun but the biggest drama there was that someone brought alcohol to the dance [wow] or someone was kissing someone else's boyfriend [omg!]. It was so...high school. In Aspen, the scandal got bigger and therefore, much better. Since there were rooms and the chaperones were few and far between, there were wild parties, hospital visits, and of course famous hook-ups. The trip was usually so scandalous that KAT had to devote a couple pages of her blog to it, instead of the usual little paragraph that most school functions achieved. It was pretty laughable how the residents of Palm Beach could judge the amount of fun a trip was based on a silly gossip site. But as the saying goes, you're nothing 'til you're talked about, and school events were no exception. In fact, Joshua's KAT page cherry had been popped by his Aspen trip freshman year. He had been mentioned casually as a freshman to look out for, but he did not have a 'name' yet and never a picture, which pretty much was the determining factor for whether you were "hot or not" on the popularity rankings. Aspen came around the time that he had decided to give up, he was no longer going to try to appease his father. So, he was going all out. He was put in a room with the new kid, Maddox Vaughan, and because of Josh's brilliant scheme to go wild--the two were fast friends. They became the most notorious freshman on that trip and got invited to the biggest parties, even the college ones...with college girls. Josh chuckled as he recalled all the death threats he and Mad had recieved from angry boyfriends. But Joshua did his [now famous] casual shrug and easy smile, while Maddox would say something like "sorry you weren't enough to keep her satisfied" before the two would walk away with another few women in their sights. The first picture ever posted of the devilish duo was them lounging on a couch with their arms around two women each and a bottle of alcohol in each boy's hand. Thus 'Casanova' and 'The Heartbreaker' were born, and they've been inseperable ever since. The two had roomed together every year after that, always making sure that if they weren't placed in the same room they 'persuaded' the right people, after all where would one be without his right hand man? He was definitely looking forward to this trip. It was a time to party it up and get his mind off of complications...
Josh pulled his warm coat even more tightly around his broad shoulders as he struggled through the snow up to the front door. The downside of Aspen, it was cold! Being born and raised in Palm Beach, Florida, Josh didn't like the cold. He preferred weather that brought girls out in bikinis not bundled them up in coats that looked like they weighed 100 pounds. He rubbed his frozen fingers together as he picked up his duffel bag and strolled into the front door. A soft sigh of relief spilled out through his red lips as the heated room enveloped him. He would strip off all these layers right now if he didn't think it would bother the other people in the room. Well....it wasn't really like he cared what bothered him. In fact the only thing that kept him from stripping down to his boxers and just lying on the carpeted ground enjoying the warmth, was the strange man by the fire that was eyeing him appreciatively. Josh shuddered a little, and not because of the cold, and hurried up to the front desk. Spotting a cute brunette working the front counter, that easy smile spread quickly over his handsome face. She was turned away from him talking into the phone in an animated tone, the one that all hotel staff uses when speaking to customers that they have to pretend to enjoy serving. He set down his bag and leaned against the counter casually, waiting for her to finish. "That's absolutely no problem at all sir, right away!" her tone was so ridiculously cheerful he almost had to laugh. But as soon as she hung up the phone he could see her shoulders slump as she let out a relieved sigh. Then she spun around her chair and came face to face with an amused Josh spinning her pencil around in his fingers. "Oh!" she exclaimed her shoulders instantly straightening and her eyes widened at the sight of the young man with toussled hair and bright blue eyes. "I'm so sorry uh sir," she fumbled with her papers in an attempt to draw her gaze away from his charming smile, "is there um something i can uh do for you?"
Josh set the pencil down and murmured in his honey sweet tone, "Yes darling there is actually something you can do for me..." He lifted a brow suggestively and let a pause linger as she snuck glances at his smiling face, "but I'm actually here with a group from Palm Beach. The name's Joshua King." She instantly looked professional because she knew that the group from Palm Beach were their highest paying customers. She scanned the list of rooms and then pulled out a key and a bunch of pamphlets. "Well uhh Mr. King--" he quickly interrupted, "please, call me Josh. And what might I call you?" She seemed a bit flustered as she fought with the proper thing to do and 'the customer is always right' policy, she she went for the compromise. "I-I'm uh Nicole. And well, Mr. um Josh, here's the keys for your room and all the information about the uh resort," she blushed when he purposely ran his hand against hers as he took the pile of information. She fiddled with her hair, pink still burning on her cheeks, "Y-you're in um 301" Josh tipped his head in thanks, "Can you do me a favor, Nicole?" She seemed to be having trouble coming up with the right response so he took her shaky bounce of her head as a nod. "Remember that room number..." he winked before grabbing his bag and walking straight for the elevator. He snuck a glance behind him as he stepped between the metal sliding doors. He could see three more girls from the hotel staff giggling and whispering with Nicole as they shot looks over at him. When he lifted his hand and gave a little wave as the doors slid closed, they all burst into giggles and blushed. 'Well this is going to be fun...' he thought to himself as he pushed the button for the third floor.
Josh found the room quickly because it was the second one in the hall. He slid his key into the lock and stepped into the large room. Judging by the perfectly clean state of the floor, Maddox hadn't been here yet. Good for him, he could set up his stuff first. He sent Mad a quick text informing him that he was already there and that Vaughan should come up with some plans for tonight. The room was fantastic as always, when the school did things...they went all out. Of course he wouldn't be spending much time in this room because he preferred spending the night in other people's rooms and then sneaking back in here for the morning check up by the chaperones. None of the chaperone's actually wanted to stay up late and keep track of everyone, so instead they just made sure everyone was in their rooms by 9:00 AM. Which suited him just fine because he didn't really like dealing with "the morning after". He dropped the duffel bag off in the bedroom before grabbing one of the fluffy white towels and heading for the bathroom. He wanted to take a shower before Mad got here, then they could just go out and hit the town. The shower was giant and he flipped the large handles before he stripped off all the ridiculous layers and stepped under the warm jet of water. It was nice to get the frozen little chunks of ice out of his hair and he stepped out of the shower feeling completely refreshed and ready for a night of booze and women that would take his mind off difficult blondes who were driving him crazy.
He groaned in protest as the blonde in question's face came to mind, of course he couldn't even go a few blissful minutes without wondering why she kept turning him down! She was completely and totally infuriating, but just because she was so humored by it. Even when he was rejected it was because they had heard about him on KAT and they called him a pig and womanizer or whatever. But she just laughed at those things. She thought it was hilarious and he couldn't understand her! Nor could he understand why he was completely and totally fascinated by her. When he was turned down before he would pursue for a few weeks maybe and usually they gave in and on the off chance that they didn't, he gave up. But with Isabella Larocque, he had been chasing for months and still found it enjoyable. He actually was starting to like her as a person, and from past experiences he knew that was dangerous water to tread.
He grabbed the white towel and wrapped it around his waist before stepping in front of the mirror. Taking another towel he ruffled his hair in an attempt to dry it. After a few seconds of that it was flopping over his sapphire eyes in disheveled perfection. A click in the lock altered him to someone else entering the room. Fluffing his hair one last time he dropped the towel that had been used to dry out his hair onto the ground, the beginning of the mess that would become of the two boys' room. He was a little unnerved that Maddox hadn't said anything yet because God knows the boy loved to talk and if he had seen 'Nicole' at the front desk he would usually already be calling 'dibs!' Josh stepped out of the bathroom with the towel slung around his waist as he called out "Vaughan?" the sight that caught his eye at the front door rendered him, for the first time in his life, speechless. It definitely wasn't his best guy friend unless said friend had grown out his hair, dyed it blonde, had a sex change, and become insanely gorgeous. [Which would be awkward for the both of them based on Joshua's infatuated gaze...] All he could think was, 'Well, there certainly isn't going to be any forgetting of Isabella Larocque on this trip.'credit: format by lainey, lyrics by modest mouse
