OVERALL PERSONALITY: kahlan is a quiet girl overall, and she's pretty shy. however, when she gets to know someone well and begins to trust them, she opens up. she's pretty innocent for a girl who grew up as the third child to the leader of a mafia family, but her mother did a good job of sheltering her so she wasn't able to get entangled with the family business a whole lot. this sheltering kept her naive as opposed to her brothers who are very worldy and 'knowing'.
despite her shyness, kahlan is extremely intelligent, and she is curious about the world. hence the reason she's in love with journalism and writing. she also has a very intenseness about her when it comes to finding out the truth. because she doesn't talk a whole lot, this leaves her world open to the noise around her, and she hears a lot of things. gossip is one of her hobbies you could say, and when she hears something, she digs until she finds out the dirty details. she loves finding out other people's dirty laundry, and she'd make for an excellent snooper for scandal star. even though she loves gossip and that sort of thing, she hates lying with a passion. she is all about the truth and telling the truth, and she won't accept less from others. kahlan is the selwyn family truth compass, all of her family members use her as their moral roadmap of sorts.

LIVING SITUATION: valks, with her parents
HISTORY: kahlan was the third child born to kyson and tessa so the family was fully emersed in the crime scene by the time she came around. despite being born into such a scene, kahlan was kept sheltered from the family business by her mother who wanted her little girl to be a lady and not some mafia assassin. by the time she got to middle school, she already knew which order silverware should be in on a napkin and how to greet guests. she was enrolled in cotillion while her family lived in ireland. kahlan loved ireland. although she was pretty much still a kid when her family lived there, she loved it. she loved all of the nature and green grass, and that's when her athletic hobbies started. however, since athletes aren't usually 'feminine' she wasn't allowed to join any school leagues or anything, and she began to hate that she couldn't have the independence she wanted to do the things she enjoyed.
when kahlan was fourteen, her father uprooted their family and moved them to the states, specifically to new york. new york was so drastically different from dublin that kahlan was shellshocked. however, despite her characteristic shyness, kahlan got used to new york faster than probably the rest of her family. she latched on to the 'gossip girl' fever of the city, the constant hustle and bustle associated with high society and all of the gossip. the gossip and the hunger to hear it became a part of her soul, and that's when she truly began to become a journalist even though she was far from being the proper age for it to be official. to her disappointment, her father uprooted their family again only a few months later and moved them all to los angeles, following the giovannis on a relentless hunt. when kahlan was enrolled into high school in la, she hid within herself and put a shell around her. she became quieter and her family didn't quiet understand it. it was quite simple actually. kahlan's sorrow after leaving new york never departed form her, so she chose not to connect with anyone as if she could punish the outside world for her feelings. during this time, however, she became ever closer to her brothers - her only family members she still cared to get close to since her parents had ostracized her by always making choices for her and not giving her any freedom. she became especially close to her oldest brother connor who was so different from her, but he had the world experience more than the others, and he could tell her about life beyond her little bubble.
connor, in turn, trusted his little sister more than anyone in the world and told her everything about his life. this is how kahlan became the only person to know that he raped the gio girl the night he almost died in a gunfight. first, kahlan heard the news that connor was at the house when the giovannis showed up, and when he went missing, she was afraid that he was gone forever. however, connor came to her after a day in hiding, and he was dirty and grimey, and kahlan patched him up before he had to face their father. that was when he told her the truth about what had happened and made her vow never to tell anyone. she promised. after her brother was exiled back to europe, kahlan realized she had to take steps on her own to make her own life, and she ran away from home a month later. she lived with her aunt evangeline who was still in new york with her husband and their two daughters. of course, her disappearance didn't go unnoticed by her parents, but they finally gave in and allowed her to live in new york with her father's sister, claiming she would be safer there than in los angeles anyway.
kahlan lived with her aunt in new york for three years until she turned seventeen and had to choose a college to attend. after graduating from high school, she got accepted to nyu and moved into the dorms. she became close friends with her roomate and attended school happily at the university for a full year. however, after hearing word from her brother connor that he was being allowed to return to the states now that enough time had gone by to clear his record in their father's eyes, kahlan transferred from nyu to valkyrie university to be close to her family again. the transition was hard for her, seeing her parents every day after being away for so long, but she was a changed person upon moving to valkyrie. she started her journalism degree in new york and by the time she got to california, she had already landed herself a role as an intern at the local newspaper. only eighteen by that time, she did little more than grab coffee for the editor-in-chief, but she loved the job. from time to time she even went out and took photographs for the paper and other random jobs to keep her occupied. instead of living with her parents, she moved into the dorms at the campus, and she still lives there to this day, two years later.
