Montéo, North Carolina
Montéo is a small city sitting on the North Carolina coastline. Its water-locked neighbor, Roanoke Island, has also become a part of the close-knit community as one of the many places people like to go during free time. The whole area teems with history, enough to fill its own textboook. Just ask the locals, and they can tell you.
Montéo was named after a Indian, Manteo. He was a native of Croatoan island, where the Roanoke colonists fled to for a couple possible reasons. They include the colonists' friendship with Manteo and a carving of the word "C-R-O-A-T-O-A-N" into a post of the fort (and "C-R-O" into a nearby tree), most likely to let John White know where they had fled. He was unable to explore the lisland though because a hurricane struck the shores of North Carolina and all of his men where lost to the sea. After the storm since he was low on provisions, White took what was left of his crew and returned to England.
The story continues, but the Colonists' friendship with the Croatoan Indian is what inspired the name for this small community. Everyone here knows each other, or at least for the most part. Though there are those few who will not even give a glance, newcomers are always welcome with smiles.
Welcome to Montéo.
