Daphne sat indian-style on a pink towel. It was nearing six in the morning and the beach was remote. The sun was rising, and she couldn't help but cry. Her life was going down hill, she could tell. She hated lying to her friends about her living situation. It had been building up for so long.
'Maybe,' she though, 'I should just move out and live in the dorms.'
The morning breezes picked up and she hugged herself closer. She had on jeans and a gray long-sleeved tunic. Those ones they wear in life-guarding. It was slightly cold for the September day. In California it usually stayed warm late into October, early November.
She stared out onto the horizon where the waves were rolling in slowly. She heard birds chirping. It was quiet, and it gave her time to think.

Josh walked across the beach, the water touching his feet. One thing people didn't know about him was he loved to come here in the morning. He usually came earlier, before classes. He liked to relax and just think.
This was his really only free time, just to think and be alone. With sports, school, and friends he never really got this time. He loves the calmness and just listening to the waves. Some morning he would just stop and lye down in the sand.
He felt the breeze hit him, it felt good. He wore a pair of jeans and a new striped polo, which was new. He feet were bare right now, he like to flew the sand on water touch his feet.
The beach was almost always empty at this time. Yet, as he walked he thought he saw someone in the distance. He walked farther and saw it was Daphne, sitting on a towel. He liked Daphne, but he also was her friend. He say she was crying. He ran up towards her.
"Daph," he said softly," are you ok?"

Daphne wiped her tears and brushed her hair out of her face. Her eyes caught him. It was Josh. Gorgeous, athletic, /friend/ Josh. She furiously wiped her eyes. Great in all of Valkyrie a good friend of hers, and the friend who she had recently grown attracted to was here, on the beach, with her. And she was crying.
She looked up and smiled, "Of course," she cleared her throat., "Of course....the wind...eyes watered. Um, what are you doing here?" she asked aburtly changing the subject. She wasn't going to tell him that she lived here. No one does. She patted the ground, offering the spot next to her. There was enough room on the towl.

"Thanks," he said sitting down on the towel. He saw her wipe away the tears. He knew they were actually tears, but obvious she didn't want to bring it up. He wanted to be a good friends, so he just decided to act like it was.
"Oh," he said," yeah, that sometimes happens to me, too."
He thought about what he would tell her about why he was here. He could lie and say he was trying to find a watch he dropped last night. Or he could tell the truth, it couldn't hurt.
"Ok," he said," you can't tell anyone, though. I come here sometimes in the mourning to just relax. Get away from school, sports, and friends. Not you, just like the pressure. I helps me to come here and just hear the ocean. It keeps me calm. So, what about you. Why are you here so early?"

"I promise," she reasurred him and patted his knee.
"Oh, I couldn't sleep," she said. She wasn't sure if he would buy it. Why would she go all the way down here from the Valks? But, he might just take it. "Decided just to come down here."
"So," she asked as she leaned back, "you going to the party at the beach?"
Yeah, she would admit, she was curious. She would still go reguardless if he wasn't going or not. She just want to know if there was something she was going to look forward to.

Nikki walked to the beach to see Josh, but saw Daphne too. Maybe they can become better friends. That's what Nikki wished.
"Hey guys," That was usually how she greeted people. Itm was just a habit.
Today she was just wearing shorts and a tank top. She was planning on going into the water, but it was possible. Her friend Josh could push her in anytime. It was probably not going to happen but it was possible.

Josh smiled when she asked if he was going to the party. He figured she was, well he hoped she was. He liked her, and wanted something to be happy about. It could bring them closer.
"Yeah, definitely," he said to her," Are you going?"
Josh turned around when he heard Nikki's voice. He was pretty good friends with her. They both played sports, and loved them.
"Hey," he said to her," What are you doing here?"

She looked up at the new voice. It was Nikki. She really didn't know her. She did know that she was very involved in the school. Sports, dance, the whole bit. She never really talked to Nikki. Just knew from reputation. Knew somone who knew someone who knew her. Yeah, probably went like that.
"Wouldn't miss it," she told him and smiled. "Are you going with anyone?" she asked. What? Josh was cute, and he probably had other girls asking him to the party. she wanted to know. She really refused to know if he was currently seeing someone. It sucked the fun out of it.

Josh smiled again at her last question. Josh didn't have a girlfriends. Well, not yet. A few girls had asked him to the dance, but he didn't say yes to anyone so far. He was waiting for the perfect person to ask.
"No," he said to her," I don't have a girlfriend. I also don't have a date. So, umm, what about you. Do you have a date?"
He really wanted to know. He didn't think she had a boyfriend. He wanted to be sure, though.

Daphne felt a little relaxed as he said he wasn't taking anyone. When he asked her she looked at him and smiled, "Nope, I'm going stag. But, you know, they'll be a lot fo people there."
Daphne had been asked on dates already, but she had said no nicely, to them. It was only the first week. "So, it feels like we haven't talking forever. How have you been?" she asked as she re-positioned herself on the towl so she faced him, straight-on.

He was happy to hear she wasn't going with anyone. He also was happy she was going. That could bring them closer.
It was true. That hadn't talked for awhile. The only thing he really hated about summer was not seeing his friends.
"I have been good, so far." he told her. " What about you. How was your summer? It is weird, we both live in the Valks. Yet, I don't see you the much."

Daphne's eyes got a little dewy at the mention of the Valks. She tried to keep it under control, but her voice wavered, "Yeah, we must be just missing each other. My summer was good. I visted New York City."
It was true that she went up to the Valks often. Her Aunt lived up there, and she was happy to keep her dirty little secret. She invited her friends up there when she had a sleepover.
"But," she continued, "I missed you." She reached up and touched his cheek and smiled. It was a long shot. Josh needed to know that...well, not even Daphne could explain it. Maybe, she needed to tell him without saying that she treasured their friendship they have.

Josh saw her hand reach up and touch his check. It was a nice feeling for him. Actually, it was the best thing he felt in awhile. He could tell she wasn't lying when she said she missed him. He also knew this meant there friendship meant a lot. He missed her a lot, too. He just realized how much more he missed her. He wanted this moment to last.
He put his hand up and touched her hair. He knew he was taking a chance by doing that. She could pull away at any minute. He wished she wouldn't do that, though.
"I missed you a lot, too," he said her,"Our friendship means a lot to mean. Promise me that we won't get in a silly fight and not talk to each other for awhile."

She melted into his touch. She closed her eyes for a moment, taking in the moment. It was quiet, only hearing the ocean and the breeze. She opened her eyes and smiled at him. She leaned forward and hugged him.
"It means a lot to me too," she said and withdrew after giving him a soft kiss on the cheek. "Silly fights were for eighth graders when going out was going to recess," she whispered and laughed.

When Daphne hugged him, he felt like the world was great. All pressure went away an it was calm. He loved it when she kissed him on the check. It felt good, like everything was making sense.
He laughed, but he knew the fights of the school year were just beginning. He leaned back on the towel and put his arm around her. Hoping she wouldn't pull away. He wanted this to last forever. The feeling of him with her made him feel like he was the luckiest teen alive.
