She tore open the envelope and unfolded the computer paper. It had been three weeks since she'd gotten a letter from home, and she had been looking forward to the next one.
The first words off of the page were of her older cousin's wedding plans and of how she wanted her to be there. Maddey's eyes narrowed as she walked to the shade of a tree, letter in hands, sitting down with her back against it.
Annalise? Getting married? Already? She shrugged and read on, Gramps had gotten sick... he was fine now, Lucky and Snickers were allowed in their home again. Maddey grinned, maybe Gloria had finally done it.
Still it continued, how no one had replaced her job at the coffee shop and that her friends all missed her and are planning to write again- even though they talked over MSN every night...
A tear ran down her cheek- she missed 'em.
It had been three long years away from home... how she longed to hear a joke from her father, a kind word from her mother, a bark from the annoying dog.
She put a hand over her mouth and continued to read. Now it was all about them missing her, wanting her home- but wanting her happy. Wanting what was best for her.
It was signed, Like ya, Daddy.
The girl had to smile, old traditions continued on... putting the letter in her bag she wiped the tears from her eyes and stared across the dimming lawn. It was getting dark, evening was coming. She didn't care.
She wanted to be home. Not here.
She'd live it out, she wasn't leaving. She had gotten in, she was going to stay...
Drying her eyes once more Maddey watched the shadows on the lawn.
