MAGDELENA GABRIELLA ESMERELDA CORINTHOSCORINTHOS ESTATE, TIJUANA MEXICO, MAY 2004 -----the thick, billowing heat rolled in on the breeze through the white painted french doors that opened up to her room, blowing the wavy locks around her face as she stared at herself in the mirror. she hadn't been there long, simply long enough to gear herself up for what she was about to do. the fourteen year old stood at the sound of the door, her twelve year old sister isabella coming into view and bringing a true smile to her lips. she smiled but she was pissed. maggie had just about readied herself to face up to her father, to demand that he let not only a woman, but his own daughter into the family business. bella's intrusion through all of that out the window, as it usually did. the poor kid was so exhaustingly oblivious to the way the world worked around her. she didn't see it, not a bit of it, and maggie wasn't sure if it was sheer stupidity or if the twelve year old chose not to see what was happening around her. regardless, she still didn't seem to have a clue. it was freeing to watch her sister so happy with the kind of a childlike innocence that made anyone else green with envy to not experience. she was carefree, happy, something maggie hadn't experienced in a while. still everytime she looked at her little sister she felt better. seeing bella so happy, so innocent, gave her a little hope. like the cruel corrupt world of a drug cartel wasn't the only life around. deep behind those curls in the back of her mind maggie knew that the life of a drug lord wasn't the only one to experience. there were sad little fucks out there who could go their whole life without so much as a broken bone, who were bored stiff with the boring lives they'd chosen, but they were still blissfully unaware of the heartaches and hardships that other people had to deal with on a daily basis. -----maggie's hardships were different from most. most people had a hard time with money, maggie did not. most people had a hard time keeping their job, maggie didn't have one to keep to begin with. most people fought with roudy neighbors or plain old stupid people on a daily basis, maggie didn't have that worry. no instead she saw death, corruption, drugs, and manipulation on a daily basis, the kind of things that could change a person if they weren't careful. through her many attempts to be careful this life had still changed maggie. it was in her nature to change. she had the mind of a manipulator, the body of a great cover, she had a thought process that kept her out of the line of fire, etc. she knew that this was the life she was born for. deep down, all the way to her bones, maggie just knew that she was born to do this. she was born to be a criminal. it sounded dangerous and she liked it. her love for the business set her apart. most criminals got in it for the money or the power, some were unlucky enough to get into crime simply because they had no other choice. then there were the lucky few, the people who created the business and turned it into their world, the people who lived for the thrill and the love for the game. people like maggie turned the business into what ever they wanted it to be. they perfected, they were worshipped, they were remembered. that was the kind of criminal maggie was. she wasn't pushed into a thing, she joined. she wasn't forced into the life, she embraced it. finally with that realization, maggie knew she was ready to face her father. she was ready to coerce the leader of the largest mexican drug cartel into giving her a job. if she was good enough she'd be able to get him to offer her a job. wouldn't that just be a kick in the pants.
-----she smiled at her sister as she rose from the vanity, her arms wrapping around the child as she rushed to her. "maggie! maggie! i rode one of the big horses today!" maggie couldn't help but to laugh as she spoke, "you did! wow! that must have been hiiiigh up." she spoke, emphasizing her words as she played along with her sister. satisfied that she'd told her story, bella turned away and hopped up on maggie's bed, her fingers dancing across the pattern on her comforter. jesus sometimes maggie thought the girl was autistic or something. "bellz you have fun okay." she backed out of the room slowly so as not to catch her sister's attention. there was no way daddy dearest was going to give her a second thought is bella was trailing behind her. the sound of maggie's designer flats echoed off the marble floor as she walked, curving her way down the hallway, down the stairs, and out the front door. her father never did business in the house and though his main headquarter's was on the property, the place was better guarded than fort knox. for a guy who hadn't ever wanted family, he sure knew how to protect them. unfortunately maggie didn't feel protected, she felt smothered, as two big, burly, and no doubt stupid bodyguards flanked her on either side, escorting her off the estate and onto the business property. she walked into the building, her sights settling on the 'coffee importer' front that the lobby displayed. ha, what a joke. brushing off her escorts, maggie slipped unnoticed into the back hall that lead to her father's pride and joy, his kingdom. one dark, narrow hall after another, one big oak door and she was in.
-----her mind worked constantly, taking in everything around her and putting it all together like pieces of a puzzle. she saw j.r. lounging on a massive italian leather couch, jerking upright as he saw who it was that came through the door. she noted his confused and horrified expression as he saw the determined look in her eyes. j.r. knew what she was up to, that much she could tell. she noted the two enforcers to either side of her father, standing idly by and awaiting some command from the very man who's spawned her. she looked at him last, the big black chair he sat in seemed to make his presence all the more menacing, at least it would to someone who's diapers he hadn't changed. anyone else could see this room, with the dark paintings, red, black, and brown interior, dark wood accents, and various animal heads and might feel a chill creep up the back of their spine. not maggie. this was an ever familiar place to her, one that had lost all essence of fright, or simply never had it to begin with. she looked up at her father to see him smiling, no doubt just a little clueless as to why she was bothering him at work. only one of his children was really involved, j.r., the first born, the golden child, the prodigy. it was natural for j.r. to be around, as it was natural for juan corinthos sr. to not know why his eldest daughter was here. from the expression he gave, maggie could pretty much bet that he thought she was stopping by to ask for shopping money, something she never did.
-----he was in for quite the shock. "ah maggie. so nice to see you." maggie fought back a snort of distaste at his first words. the tone implied he was ready to give her what she wanted and be done with her, but maggie would not be pushed aside or sent away. she wasn't like one of these mindless drones he had working for him. "what can i do for you?" ahh just the kind of question she was looking for. "i want a job." she said with a smirk on her lips, catching j.r. shooting to his feet from the corner of her eye. her gaze never left her father's she was not going to back down from this and she wasn't about to give him any reason, any ammunition, that he would no doubt use against her. "you don't need a job, you've got plenty of money and everything you've ever asked for." she had to really fight hard to keep herself from rolling her eyes. how dumb was he going to play? "wrong kind of job daddy-o." she said confidently as she took a step forward, "this has nothing to do with a desire to throw myself into some corporate delusion and you know it. stop pretending like you don't know what i mean. i. want. a. job." she made clear work of annunciating her last sentance, to make sure she got her point across. her eyes still focused only on her father as with a wave of his hand he dismissed his enforcers, a smirk coming to her lips as they dragged j.r. out with them. the sound of the door clicking shut was all that tampered with the silence as father stared down daughter and daughter didn't budge. "this is not the life i want for you magdelena. you will not sway me on this." if he thought that using her actual name was going to scare her he was dead wrong. it only gave her a little more power behind her. he used actual names when he was trying really hard not to break the cold, unfeeling exterior and be himself.
-----she had him in the palm of her hand and it was clear that they both knew it. "i was born for this and you know it. unlike your golden boy i have the cold, calculating kind of mind that you need. deny it all you want, but you know you want this." maggie sauntered further into the room, sitting herself down in the chair at the front of the desk as her father stood from his chair, fists resting on the antique wood, the skin stretching white across his knuckles as he tried very, very hard to keep his cool around his daughter. this was the only way to get to him, to break his front and bring out the real bastard that her father was. "face it pops, your son's a lazy putz who won't get anywhere on his own. he doesn't have the drive, the want, or the head to keep up with this. i do. hell i'm not saying to make me heir or anything so stupid, i'm saying i want a job, and i know just the one you're going to give me." juan walked around his desk to sit down on the corner, not more than a foot from her. didn't change a thing, maggie still smiled up at him, as innocent as can be. "first of all, don't talk down your brother. he's taking over and there's nothing that's going to stop that. second, i told you i don't want you here. this business isn't for kids, much less for women..." maggie's smile broke as he continued to speak. if he was going to say no simply because she was a woman than he could be expecting a bullet through the back of his skull sometime later today. "but, i could use you. you'll get a probation period. work the weapons, train, and we'll see what i can do with you." now that she hadn't expected. maggie had figured there would be a littl more of a fight than that. "i want you were i can keep an eye on you." the cold facade washed back over his face as he stood from the desk and walked back to his chair.
-----well it was a start, and truth be told it was more than maggie had expected, so she was remotely happy when she stood and walked out the door, the enforcers and a very angry j.r. standing before her. "seeya 'round boys." she said with a smile as j.r.'s face turned beet red with anger and he pushed beside her and into the room, the guards close on his heels. the door closed just as j.r. began yelling. she still had a smile on her face as she stepped out into the daylight, headed back toward the house with a newfound sense of accomplishment.
-----she didn't know what was coming in the near future. all she knew was it was going to be fun.
