VALKYRIE,
CALIFORNIA
the ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
But what do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say?

OVERALL PERSONALITY:
You know, a lot of people who go through some harsh times, they grow hard and tough. They encase themselves in a protective layer and while that layer does successfully keep some of the bad out, it completely keeps all the good stuff out. And no matter how bad some things got with her mother, May was never the type to build a protective shell. Her mom sheltered her, so May's dream was always trying to live, feel, experience as much as she could, good or bad. May, up to this point lived her life against her personality in order to stay out of trouble with her mother. She lived her life quietly when inside all she wanted to do was sing from the rooftops. And the fun loving nature is the only place you can really start when going into May's personality. It's who she is, it's what's going to drive most of her actions in the upcoming future now that her mother isn't constantly breathing down her neck. May lived a sheltered life and now, because of that, she wants to live and have as much fun as she possibly can. Forget worrying about regret, or what may happen or if she could get hurt, she just wants to feel alive you know?
But while she wants to live her life to the fullest, she also has a few deal breakers. May, being so sheltered is obviously a virgin. It was like the number one rule especially because of her mother's guilt over well... her. Dating, even talking to boys was out of the question. Well, May's going to date but she does not want to lose her virginity. That is not something she feels ready to try, anything else she will for the most part, from sky diving to drinking, to pot even if she's persuaded but her virginity is not for the taking, not yet at least. She really wants to keep that safe. Maybe its part of her faith coming in. May is not the MOST religious person in the world because it is what her mother used to control her most of the time but May loved singing in Temple. She liked attending temple, she loves her Jewish culture, history and heritage and it's a part of her. She just doesn't late faith control her life in completion.
May also happens to be about the sweetest girl on the planet. She's got one of those hearts that don't quit. She is a volunteer, she is always there to listen and comfort. She is basically the opposite of her mother when it comes to dealing with people you know. May thinks a crazy fun night out is going to the soup kitchen and feeding the homeless. She's a good person with a good heart. But sometimes what comes with people being too nice, is also, not realizing when people aren't nice. May was always by her mother, an adult while kids her age always felt like her safe haven and because of this May has grown far too trusting of kids her own age. Kids can't be bad people, nope not around her. They're nothing compared to her mother. She grew distrusting to adults and too trusting towards people her own age. This can and probably will get her in trouble although it hasn't happened yet because she hasn't had the chance too. In school she was always well liked, she was never miss popular but she was not the girl getting smoothies in the face. She would have had the opportunity but since her mother was so strict, no one has had a chance to corrupt her yet.
The one thing May was able to explore, even with her mother was her natural singing talent. The first time she sang when she was a kid, she immediately fell in love with it. She was also able to sing in temple. Singing is a way for her to feel free and feel like she's flying. Her mother can't take that away from her ever.

HISTORY:
Aiya Avraham was a girl who was raised to live her life right. But this is the modern world and from personal experience we all know our parents are never perfect. She was a Jewish girl visiting Israel with her family for a religious experience. While she was there and a girl of 22 and ready to rebel after another fight with her strict parents, she got drunk one night. She had never had alcohol before and never again because on that night she met Lev Inbar. He was a married man, he had been in a fight with his wife and in a great lax of judgement on both their ends, they slept together. Both left the night ashamed and trying to forget what they had done, but when Aiya learned she was pregnant and knowing she had only ever had sex once, she knew exactly who the father was and how he was not to be a part of her new child's life. She would not contact the man, ever. She was disgusted with herself, horrified by her repulsive actions. And she wasn't the only one. When Aiya's parents found out about what she had done they disowned the girl. Aiya fled to New York city in one of the largest Jewish neighborhoods outside of Israel.
Once settled in the NYC, she gave birth to a baby girl with a full head of dark brunette hair. She name her Maidel after her grandmother. Aiya was not a happy woman. She became very strict with her faith and very strict with her daughter. A daughter she never quite forgave for being born out of wedlock, as if it was the infant girl's fault. Aiya joined the local temple but she never really made any new friends. She did not want anyone to find out about her past indiscretions or her daughter's true background. The woman became more and more harsh as her hatred for herself grew and grew, stemming from her family's disowning her. She felt sick to the stomach of so much guilt. As the new born grew into a formula fed toddler, the young one kept trying and trying to walk. She learned how to walk at only one. Very young. But this one was apparently a quick learner. She was also probably the fastest kid to be potty trained, not that Aiya appreciated her good fortune in having a two and a half year old and not needing to change any diapers.
Soon it was time for Maidel to start school. She was sent to a very small private Hebrew school where she learned Hebrew as well as a very one sided version of history. She did enjoy learning about her people's history. The kids at school were nice to her. School time was good time. At home all she seemed to do was work. She would come home, do homework, chores, make dinner, eat, chores, usually a punishment exercise and then to bed. A punishment exercise is what her mother called "training." Whenever Maidel did anything she did not approve of, which could be as little as slouching, Aiya would punish Maidel but forcing to her write lines. Not like the ones in school where if you talk back to the teacher you have to write "I will not talk back" about fifty time or whatever. No, Maidel wrote the same thing no matter what she did wrong, "I am not worthy of love until I learn to obey" And instead of fifty times, she would be forced to write it 200 hundred times. More if her mother deemed fit. When her mother needed to go to work while Maidel was still home, instead of paying for a babysitter, she would lock the girl in the small bare cabinet-like closet inside of the closet in Maidel's room. It was a little wooden room about five feet tall and four feet wide, three feet deep. Just enough to fit a small stool on which she was to sit until her mother got back. By the time Maidel was ten, she had acquired a severe case of claustrophobia.
It was clear to see why school was the best part of Maidel's day. When she was eleven, a friend of hers called her May. Maidel loved it. She preferred to be called by May but when one of her friends called to her as May while her mother was around, Aiya was furious. "Is Maidel not good enough?" "are you so grand you can't handle being named after your humble bubbie?" Bubbie being Yiddish for grandmother. Aiya was so hurt by it that she took her punishments a step further to the rare but painful belt whippings. May became even more careful and even more resentful to her mother. She still adored her Jewish culture, having many Jewish friends May knew from personal experiences that her mother was a rare form of evil. Writing lines and being locked up were still the most common punishments, as well as having her mouth washed out with soap if she said something her mother disapproved of like saying "Oh my god" etc etc. Her mother, as you probably assumed was also not able to stomach the idea of May dating and lets face it, kids want to date. So May wasn't allowed to. She's now a fully developed 14 year old. Well not fully. She didn't get her period until she hit fifteen. Her mother was irrational and punished May with more lines for getting her period. That's when May decided her mother truly was nuts.
The only joy May ever seemed to get, outside of just school was an extra curricular that ever so often her mother would allow her to take part in. Mainly because even Aiya could not deny her little girl had a natural vocal talent and that was singing in musicals. May loved it and while she resented her mother, she could not say honestly that she did not feeling happier than anyone when her mother actually seemed proud of her after she sung in Temple.
When May was sixteen she was walking home from school and talking to the most adorable guy. He was nice to her even though they really didn't know each other. They had chemistry he was great, or at least he seemed so to May but he wasn't Jewish and when her mother saw May talking and laughing with him, she flipped out on her and that was a severe beating. It was a worse one than May had even known her mother to be capable. But when her mother saw May with that boy, all she saw was herself with Lev, May's father, and fear and shame took over. The boy came to see May the next day and learned she was in the hospital because she "fell down the stairs" as her mother had put it, May had hit her head so hard she was in a coma. The boy knew better, found himself really caring about May even for a girl he just met, and called the cops, during the investigation they found the small bare closet with a stool and the hundreds of mead notebooks with the lines written and re-written and Aiya was arrested. May woke up a few days later not remembering the events of the past week or so, including the boy(if someone has a boy who may have been in New York recently who'd like to be him, I'd love it). May stuck around for the trial but when her mother was sent to prison, fear and relief both spread through her. Relief from not going back and fear of where she was going to go now.
The state ended up getting in contact with her father. Maidel didn't believe it at first. Her mother never spoke of her father. She always just assumed he was dead. But no, he was alive. He didn't even know she had existed. May's breath caught in her throat when she found out she was being sent to him. Excitement, nervousness, everything swarmed within her. She even had two half sisters? how amazing is that? So when she got on the plane to head to Valkyrie California, the only thing she knew was that this was her chance to live her life and she came here determined to do just that.
