VALKYRIE ACADEMY INDOOR POOL, NOVEMBER 8, 2007, NOON
i know that got kind of graphic
but sometimes life's cinematic
. . . . . . .
oh ew. it was only fifth hour of the school day and she already had disgusting amounts of homework her dumb ass teachers expected her to have completed either tomorrow or within the next couple of days. and, as much as it rampantly sucked, artie was pretty sure she was actually going to have to do it all, hand it in on time and... ugh... put some effort into it. all of these were things she usually shied away from and attempted to avoid at all costs, especially since moving to valkyrie. for a long time, her approach to school had been ignoring homework until the last minute, then rushing through it and then turning it in, in all of its sloppy, half assed glory. there were a few things that she skipped all together, too, though she wasn't so irresponsible that it happened all the time... only when she knew it wasn't going to completely shoot her grade down into the deep, dark depths of crap. and the results were averages of c's and b's on her report cards.
but of course valkyrie academy was a prestigious institution that prided itself on all the brainiacs it managed to churn out. and seeing as the school she attended in new york, while classy and decent, was not, naturally the curriculum here had been a bit more challenging and harder to slack off with, but she felt she had done okay with it all the same. more and more d's had started popping up in her grades, which her parents had not been happy about. she had recieved many a "we're disappointed in you, step it up" talk, all of which she had pretended to listen to and afterwards had promised to try and do better. but, honestly, why exactly her parents were expecting her to do what they asked like that, because what credibility did they have with her anymore? right. none. things were a bit better between herself and them now, though, admittedly. artie no longer wanted to shoot herself after spending more than fifteen minutes at a time with either of them, and her mother was not longer either nit picking at everything she did or ignoring her. however, joyce and rawley were still very often at each other's throats, which was just fucking annoying. when it had first started, their yells had used to make her cry, but now she was used to it. she really kind of wished they would just get a divorce already, but they seemed determined to keep up some sort of facade for all their socialite friends. it really didn't take a genius to see that they just weren't good together anymore, so it really bugged artie that they were still forcing her to put up with their continual temper tantrums at each other. especially now that she was trying to slack less with her schoolwork, it being her senior year and all.
though as she walked out of her fifth hour class, she was seriously rethinking that dumb ass decision of hers. thankfully, though, lunch was next, so she could use some of the free time to get as much done as possible so she would have to get off her butt as little as possible in the name of homework when she got home. it was a good thing she wasn't feeling particularly hungry, because it wouldn't really matter if she didn't get to eat very much. come to think of it, she wasn't really in the mood for school food at the moment, either, to say nothing of eating in the big dumb noisy cafeteria. hmm. when she reached her locker, she twirled her lock into the correct numerical positions to open it and then dumped all her books onto the heap situated at the bottom of the small rectangular space that had been sanctioned off by the academy for her personal use. a plan then popped, completely formulated, into her brain, and it made the muscles in her face jerk upwards into a slightly mischievous smile. she quickly managed to locate some trig and european history homework, dropped it on the floor just outside her locker, then began to rummage through her messenger bag backpack. she knew she had some sort of food somewhere in there... aha! her hand had brushed against something obscure, hiding down beneath a layer of miscellaneous junk, and upon inspection it proved to be a bag of swedish fish. lovely.
she scooped all of her stuff into her arms and began to wade through the hallway once again, which was still somewhat crowded with teenagers on their way to lunch, or to some sort of activity that took place during the lunch hour. or maybe to shoot up some crack cocaine behind the dumpsters out back. artie wasn't technically doing any of those. after cutting ahead of a group of jabbering girls who were walking painfully slowly, she made a turn that was definitely not going to lead her to the cafeteria and headed for the athletic section of the academy, hoping that no doors were going to be stupid and be locked on her. so she did a little victory dance when she reached the doors of the academy's indoor pool and she was able to open it. fuck yes. she stuck her head in cautiously, to make sure there wasn't swim team or water polo practice going on or something. thankfully, however, the nice, posh area was completely deserted; not an aspiring michael phelps wannabe or buff dude in a speedo in sight. woot. she probably wasn't supposed to be here, but hell, that was kind of beyond her power, wasn't it? she walked forward several paces, her flats creating slightly reverberating echoes as they slapped the floor of the deck, until she stood on the edge of the pool. she then kicked off said flats, found a bit of space along the edge that wasn't wet and sat down on it, dipping her legs into the water, hiking her skirt up a little around her thighs, just as a precaution against any rogue waves that might come up for some reason. she then settled her books into her lap and ripped open her bag of swedish fish and tossed one of the little red, fish shaped glops of yummy into her mouth. mm. this was her favorite kind of lunch; unhealthy and delicious. and it was made even better by the fact that she was sitting on the edge of valkyrie academy's indoor poor, her feet in the water. even if she was about to start working on her trig homework.
