BEST MEMORY: the first time he acted on stage. it gave him such a rush that he'll never forget it. it was a bright spotlight in a long line of darker days in his life.
WORST MEMORY: the night he got in a fight with his father over wanting to be an actor. his father never supported him, and asher wanted to live up to the old man's dreams, but he just couldn't. he hates remembering the look of disappointment and anger on his father's face.
OVERALL PERSONALITY: asher is quiet for the most part, but it's not because he's shy. you can't be shy in the acting business. he's outgoing, but he's not the type to speak first. he just doesn't expect everyone to want to talk to him. he's very humble that way. although he's an actor, he doesn't consider himself to be much of a people person, but he's able to put on a smiling face when he's surrounded by a crowd of people. despite his inherited bad habits from his father such as anger, he has learned to control himself in a way his older brother connor has not. in a way, emotionally, asher is much more of the coolheaded son that kyson wanted to take over the mob after he steps down, but he never cared to follow in his father's footsteps.
although he has major differences from his siblings, he still gets along with them, and he is loyal to them to the end. connor is the only sibling he really butts heads with because they look at the world through different scopes. asher believes the world is not set in stone and it is his to mold to get his dreams while connor believes the opposite, believing his life has to be mapped out for him. asher is also a lot like his mother and sees the sweeter things in life instead of the heartless, cold exterior that his father and oldest brother see.

HISTORY: asher selwyn was everything his older brother connor was not. connor was the first born to the family, and he was instantly beloved by his parents and his uncle kipper. he was darkhaired and fairskinned and he had a bubbly personality from the get-go. asher, however, was a different story. he was blond with blue eyes and he was pretty sick as a child. he was born with jaundice. thankfully, he was healed from it and grew up to be a boisterous little toddler. because of his sickness early on, his parents' attention migrated from his brother connor to him, beginning a love/hate relationship between them from a very young age. parents say they love each of their children equally, but is that true? when two are so very different, is it possible to love both ends of the spectrum? with the selwyn parents, it seems to be difficult. tessa selwyn favored her little asher, perhaps because he had been sick or maybe for some other reason, while her husband favored their eldest son connor. the blackheaded little boy was trained to be a soldier from the time he could walk, and although kyson wanted asher to be a mafia soldier as well, he didn't put as much pride into his second son. this created a tenuous relationship between asher and his father very early on as well.
asher grew up in his older brother's shadow, but he tried to make himself believe that it wasn't true because of their differences. he embroiled himself in his education while connor became a soldier. despite the lack of attention he gave to his second son, kyson selwyn was disturbed that asher wasn't jumping at the opportunity to become connor's twin in the family business. when asher hit middle school, he got into his first school play, and his love for theatre began. suddenly, his devotion to something apart from the irish mafia struck a chord with his father who tried to forcefully keep him in the 'family business'. he pulled asher out of public school and made his wife homeschool him, but asher was instantly despondent and unresponsive. he hated being away from the friends he'd made, and he missed the theatre. his mother tried to homeschool him for a year, but after that, she knew she couldn't keep him home any longer. she talked kyson into allowing the boy to return to public school, and asher instantly perked back up. secretly, he joined the drama club and refused to tell his father.
when he went into high school, he could no longer keep his secret hobby a secret. his father found out he was part of the drama club when the school called inquiring for a parent's signature for a certain play asher was taking part in. that night, asher and his father had the hugest falling out their family had ever seen. he didn't want to give up his love, and kyson refused to let his son get into something so 'sissy'. angered by his father's reaction, asher vowed to keep his dream alive, and he ran away from home. he lived with a friend for a week before his father found him and told him to return home. asher refused and told him that he wanted to attend school elsewhere. kyson refused, obviously. however, around this same time, connor got himself into the gunfight with the italians and kyson selwyn had to turn his attention to covering up what happened, and asher was no longer in the spotlight. packing up his things which remained in the family's home late at night while connor and kyson argued over what had happened, asher snuck out of the house and ran away to new york: land of the theatre and broadway. while his brother was being ordered back to europe, asher was busy attending an arts school in new york, funded by his aunt. not long after, his younger sister kahlan also fled to new york - a city she loved for differing reasons from her brother - and the two lived together in their aunt's home.
asher graduated the performing arts school and got into an acting company in new york where he worked through college. he got a degree in drama at nyu and became a wellknown name in the playhouses throughout the burroughs of new york. although not as famous as some of his contemporaries, asher was rather wellknown in the actor's circles. however, when his sister decided to give their father another chance, asher wondered if he should do the same. although he hated to admit he had anything in common with his father, he was stubborn and it was very hard for him to forgive and forget. but, in the end, he missed his siblings enough to want to move closer to them. so, he packed up his bags and moved from the city where he'd lived for the better part of his life, heading for california where his sister and brothers were along with his parents.
now, he lives in the shaks in a pleasant little townhome, and he's trying to get off the ground with an acting company based in los angeles. he's also working on getting an agent to get him some minor gigs in tv shows and commercials and such. also, he's recently gotten an offer to star in a broadway musical, but he's still trying to decide if he wants to branch into that part of the theatre. he is the lead singer for his band phoenix requiem, but he's nervous to do it on the stage.
