LUCA. ANGELO. GIOVANNI.( I NEED TO BREATHE I CAN'T BELIEVE )( I THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I FALL ASLEEP ) ----THE CAR WAS SILENT OF COURSE. luca was driving. his betrothed fiancee, maggie, corinthos, sat next to him. it wouldn't be as awkward if luca's younger cousins, paolo, wasn't hanging out in the back seat. this was how maggie and him were usually in car rides. well, there was more verbal arguments, but with their little 'deal' they couldn't go arguing in public anymore, especially with family around. so now it was just worse because it's ot like they have actual human conversations. luca could feel paolo's eyes on him as he navigated around los angeles on the way to a benefit. he didn't even know for what. it was a black tie event, for one thing, and it'd be 'great p.r. for luca and maggie to establish themselves as a couple' that, coming from fausto himself. he called luca the day before to tell him. the more people knowing about two kids, from the giovannis and corinthos', getting married the better.
since they were engaged and soon to be parading all around the benefit by his uncle, it would be appropriate for maggie to wear some form of engagement ring. it felt heavy in his pocket, carrying both a curse and burden on his shoulders. fausto gave it to him when he was last i valkyrie. luca was just going to give it to maggie when he followed her down to las vegas. of course, they fought and he left, forgetting about the diamond rock fausto insisted on luca giving her. the giovannis were wealthy, so naturally, fausto would buy a diamond right that pretty much blinded all who looked at it. luca didn't have any say in the ring because he would have just gotten one of those fake crystal ones. tonight, however, he'd have to give the ring to her or else fausto would have his head. it also didn't help that maggie was pissed at him. when she came back from vegas early, she found luca and london together. she thought they slept together, and luca was too pissed to tell her otherwise. so, she thought he hooked up with his ex he probably still had feelings for. the truth was, he didn't sleep with london. he wanted to... he was about to when something in him told him to stop. he thought of maggie and then he just couldn't go through with it. he blamed it on that damn kiss. it had pretty much have been fucking with him since it happened.
now it was time to be out there for more people to see they were getting married and not just the close family. this was where the real acting came in. maggie had her doubts in him. it was easier to act, it was. but between them... could one touch look and feel like something else? he pulled into the circular driveway of the big building. the valet waited and opened the door for everyone. luca was just given a ticket and he walked his way around the car before it took off. he adjusted the tux's jacket and made sure his tie was align. paolo and maggie were both waiting on the other side for him. he stuck his arm out towards maggie, waiting for her to take it. it was showtime now. paolo stood on the other side of maggie, his hands buried in his pockets as they ascended the stairs to the warmly-lit hall. laughter and music could be heard coming from the inside.
once they reached the foyer, they were greeted by people in suits. workers. luca smiled and nodded to them and he looked into the hall where table were. he spotted fausto immediately standing over a table talking to people. his uncle had the unnatural ability to command attention in a room without being loud and obnoxious. fausto wasn't even hosting the event, he was a guest, and it looked like he was the one this night was all about. paolo turned in front of him. "i'm going to find alberto. he just got back from africa. you guys... i don't even know. look a little more happier in front of my dad, i guess." luca narrowed his eyes at paolo who shrugged and took off. when paolo left, his line of vision was replaced with fausto again who exactly at that moment, looked up and spotted maggie and luca. he turned back down to the people he was talking to. luca knew he was wrapping the conversation up to get over to them. shit. got to get that ring. he let his arm fall, causing their arms to untwine from each other. luca pushed maggie in front of him and started digging in his pocket. he grabbed his left hand. "here," he started, "fausto gave this to me a week ago." luca pulled the ring out. he cured to himself as the rock caught the chandelier above them and started sparkling. he slid it on her finger like it was unimportant and did it quite unsentimentally. "so, you should probably start wearing it. might as well look the part." though he looked like he didn't give a damn about it, seeing maggie wear an engagement ring on her finger now looked weird. made it real.
"luca! maggie!" luca grimaced as he heard their names in on expression. fausto came up to them, his arms outstretched. people in the foyer turned and looked. fausto put both hands on luca's shoulders and shook him for a moment like they hadn't seen each other in a long time. luca knew fausto was putting on a show. in front of the common folk, he often acted animated. next, he went to maggie where he held her hand and backed away, admiring her dress. "you look stunning tonight, maggie." he broke into a grin at the two and let go of maggie's hand. "great outcome, wouldn't you say? i heard the los angeles times are here." he grinned again. luca nodded. like fausto 'heard' they were here. he probably hired them to come. luca wasn't famous. no. the most his picture was used was probably on police boards with 'luca 'angel face' giovanni" written below it. stupid cops and their plans to bring the giovanni big dogs down. however, fausto, was still one of the most influential men in los angeles. he'd get a mention or two sometimes in the paper. "they are? fun," luca said quite dryly. fausto shook his head. "i want you two to meet a few people... come on now." luca inhaled and exhaled slowly as fausto started walking ahead. luca turned his head back to maggie, and looked at her slowly, his hand moving to grab hers. "let's pretend you're not pissed at me, hm?"

MAGDELENA "MAGGIE" CORINTHOSLOS ANGELES CALI, BLACK TIE BENEFIT, DECEMBER 2007 -----damn. this. night. damn everything about it for all she cared. maggie was in no mood to be paraded around like some piece of arm candy for the entire night, but it looked more and more like that was going to be the ase no matter what. now normally maggie wouldn't care. she wouldn't give a damn about being the gorgeous piece hanging off of some guy's arm. that was what her father expected, that was what every other man in this business figured she would be, so why not just play the role? well first and foremost maggie was in a tissy. no, that was the wrong word...maggie was fuming fucking mad. she couldn't believe she'd been roped into this after the shit that luca had pulled after getting back from vegas. first he had to go ruin a perfectly decent moment on a vegas dance floor. he had to go from dancing with her and borderline having a good time to cussing at her and inciting her anger. apart from her head still reeling at the complete 180, his words had worked. she'd been pissed off beyond belief. so much so that she'd been happy to leave him to storm off of the dance floor while she went to her room to nurse her wounds. that pissed her off too. maggie never nursed her wounds because she never got hurt. maggie never allowed herself to get hurt. the only reason why luca was still breathing was because she would be doing nothing but proving her father right if she ended his life. but oh did she want to. the warm sticky feel of his blood on her hands would be like the greatest of all spa days. it would have been like a fat kid with his first cake after fat camp. it would have been d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. but after a night spent steaming away, maggie had decided to lose herself in the casino. she'd met some guy, had a few drinks, played a little cards, and headed up to her room to have a little fun.
-----un-lucky enough for her, it never went anywhere. something in her gut told her that it couldn't. whether this engagement was real or not, "cheating" would still come across as real once she'd gotten back to valkyrie. it was the kind of situation she was happy to avoid. so she'd kicked her entertainment out on his ass, packed up her things, and made the long cab ride home...alone. well as alone as one could get in a cab. she'd walked into luca's loft that morning to find him with london. of all fucking people! she would have rather sacrificed her precious eyes to forks before she would have volunteered to take a peek at any of that. she didn't handle herself well, but maggie wasn't in the best of moods to begin with. she'd collected her things, hopped in her car that had been parked at luca's loft for the longest time, and headed home. to her real home. the one that her brother had taken over. she'd come home to find the couch untouched and her half naked brother sprawled out on her sheets. needless to say she'd taken her anger out on j.r. with an angry squeal she'd barreled her feet into his back and dumped his ass on the floor. shed yelled at him and swatted at him until he'd backed up enough for her to close the bedroom door on him. then she'd sat in her bedroom in her angry haze until she stopped seeing red. that had been approximately an hour before she'd gotten the call from luca saying they were being beckoned to a benefit in LA. fucking wonderful. she'd dressed and dolled herself up for the event and showed up at luca's loft with enough time to make it look like she'd been there all along. that would be the way it was from now on. she'd stay till everyone else was gone and then she would make herself scarce. because even the sight of him in the dimly-lit car as they drove to los angeles, with paolo in the backseat, made her stomach turn. this night was going to be more of a challenge than the rest. maggie had always wanted to kill luca, but she'd never been enraged to the point of actually losing her self control. never before had it happened and never before was she so sure that it might.
-----thank god for the silence in that car. maggie was just able to rest her head on the seat, peer out the tinted windows, and watch the scenery rush by as they made their way from valkyrie to los angeles. not much longer now. maggie promised herself as she watched the scenery begin to change from mostly trees dotting the highway to more lights and billboards. she sat with her hands in her lap, mindlessly playing with the calf-length jacket that rested over her dress and thus over majority of her body. finally los angeles really began to come into view, their travels changing from long drives on the highway to stops and turns on streets. she knew they were close when she saw a stream of luxurious cars pulling into a drive, luca slowing at the same time. finally...it was about time she get a chance to breathe. when the car finally stopped at the valet's station, maggie smiled as someone opened her door and offered her a hand. "thank you." maggie said, her first words of the night. she waited next to paolo for luca, who was playing catch up as usual. as much as everything about him had begun to piss her off, which had turned into everything after vegas, maggie had to push all of that to the back burner. tonight was their night to shine and maggie had to play it up as usual. she faked it extremely well as she linked her arm with his, her other hand smoothing over her dress as they walked up the stairs and into the hall. despite her overwhelming desire to gag at his touch, maggie was going to act her cute little ass off. she had more motive than ever for this little sham of an engagement to be evaporated and to be able to get back to her old life. being a drug dealer wasn't nearly as glamorous as this, but at least the company was better. take that luca.
-----paolo made quick work of leaving, obviously seeing through the tension that had lingered like a thick, choking fog. oh well. she could remedy that, and she did with a smile that appeared just before the younger giovanni shuffled out of sight. maggie had hardly gotten a chance to slid out of her jacket before luca was shoving her in front of him, fumbling with something from his pocket. she glared at their hands and luca grabbed hers, looking up at him as a glimmering light practically blinded luca. maggie chuckled, looking down at the huge rock on her finger, the coolness of the band making the added weight all the more prominent. "probably right." she said under her breath as fausto approached. she turned to smile at fausto as he approached, happily relinquishing luca's hand for that of his uncle. her smile widened under fausto's appreciative gaze, "thank you." she took her place next to luca once fausto had let go of her hand, listening to the chatter for a moment before fausto started walking off. 'let's pretend you're not pissed at me, hm?' she bit down on the inside of her cheek to keep her eyes from rolling at his words. "well in that case it's a good thing i'm a much better actress than you." she whispered under her breath. she walked beside him, her hand regrettably in his. "i'll play this so well you won't even know i'm acting. so just go with it."

( LUCA. ANGELO. GIOVANNI. )( I NEED TO BREATHE I CAN'T BELIEVE )( I THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I FALL ASLEEP ) ----OK, LUCA WILL ADMIT. when he and maggie were interrupted by london, luca was completely caught off guard. he wasn't expecting that. he knew he should have been prepared for anyone to come into his loft. and he was.... except for london. unless it was for a shoot, luca generally didn't have females waltzing in and out. especially ones he had a relationship with. or did have a relationship with in this case. luca was pretty confident that after he declined on the sex with london, she wasn't going to talk to him anytime soon. he blamed the stupid engagement and girl he was engaged to. and he'd continue saying 'girl' because maggie was still in high school. what the hell, right? fausto wanted a spring wedding. so, one week maggie would be in school, the next week she would be married. that was so messed up in his mind. he made fun of his classmates when one or two would get engaged. of course they claimed they were 'in love,' 'high school sweethearts' and all that bullshit. maggie and luca were no where near loving each other, but no one would see it that way. people would see it like they were in love. it made him sick. she might be eighteen, but luca definitely still thought he was too young to get married, and he was twenty one.
so when maggie told him she was the better actor of the two, he only smiled. she didn't even know how well luca could act. fausto trained him well. he didn't have a big strong presence like fausto did, but luca could turn into anyone you wanted him to be. he could be a rowdy frat boy as he displays so well during his trips to chicago. he could be a new businessman with the a clear direction on what he wanted to be. hell, he even did a stint as a over-achieving journalist in new york one time. luca could appear like someone you don't want to mess with, or something who looked approachable. the man could speak three languages fluently, and other european languages decently. maggie had only seen a small surface of him. there were still so many layers and folds she had yet to see in him. one small hiccup in the form of london never happened. if she wanted to act, he could act. "i'll play this so well you won't even know i'm acting. so just go with it." and eyebrow rose and he tugged her along by their hands as he tried to catch up to fausto. "oh, really?" he brought up their hands to his face and he kissed one of her knuckles. "because by the end of the night, everyone at this goddamn benefit is going to know how much i love you, babe." he squeezed her hand in hers, maybe a few levels harder than most people would.
if luca knew his uncle, (which he did,) there were two kinds of people fausto was going to have the pair meet. there was the type of person who was probably just as wealthy, the fake kind of family friends. fausto might have met them at a party in the past or were mutual friends. fausto really didn't care for those types but it was good to get himself out there. these were the type of people who heard the rumors about fausto and the rest of the giovannis. the 'are they or aren't they?' wonderment. those who knew were amazed that this rumored king pin was so nice and welcoming in public. someone like him couldn't possibly be ordering his soldiers to eliminate people who pose problems. or running dirty business that involved anything from gambling to weapon dealing. the other type of people fausto would be showing off to were the ones that counted. they were the ones that knew what giovanni and corinthos meant. they knew what it meant for that combination of surnames to combine in the form of marriage. they could be people that worked for heads that got along with the giovannis or that didn't get along with the giovannis. fausto was all about speaking in volumes, and if the union of an italian mob boy and a mexican drug cartel girl wasn't a big enough statement, well, then the messengers didn't know their shit and better go brush up on their organized crime history.
this time tomorrow though, anyone important from here to the east coast would know about this. luca pulled maggie along as fausto led them through the hall. a few people turned and looked at them -- or fausto. luca wasn't surprised that people were curious what the giovanni head was doing next. there were many tables in this room, people talking, people snacking. mostly, people drinking. there was a podium on a risen stage. directly below it was the a wooden dance floor. some couples were dancing. not 'pop, lock, and drop it' dancing. but the ballroom dancing type. an orchestra was playing towards the left of the stage. there was mostly old couples dancing. luca could see fausto and his wife dancing out there. he wondered where his aunt actually was. he knew she couldn't come for some reason because she was there when he picked paolo up. luca spotted paolo by the bar, alberto standing next to him. he hadn't seen alberto in several months as he had been in africa (of all places) on business for the giovannis. luca could tell his older cousin by a year looked tired and worn from the trip. though he was clean-shaven, he looked scruffy. alberto jr. was fausto's first born son. which only meant unless something horribly happened to him, he would be the next fausto when fausto died or retired. one might think that luca would be jealous of his cousin, but that was not the case. he actually got along really well with alberto, like a brother. if luca kept up his good work and provided a lot to the business, alberto would probably make luca underboss. the giovannis always tried to keep higher positions to blood family. it's jsut how it was. they trusted each other. it was a good thing the giovanni family was so big. luca wondered if his marriage to maggie would mar his record up. would he still be good enough?
"sal, i'd like you to meet someone. this is my nephew, luca, and his lovely bride-to-be, maggie corinthos." they had stopped in front of a balding man. maybe about fifteen pounds overweight. the way he looked at maggie already made luca group 'sal' into the second group of people - the ones that mattered. "luca, sal moretti." moretti. well, the man was italian. luca shook sal's hand. "nice to meet you." sal shook maggie's hand warmly and then looked at both of them again. "how'd you two meet?" it was a valid question, and luca knew he wasn't just interested. he wanted to know how the hell luca found himself engaged to a corinthos. they never really thought about how they were going to explain their meeting and engagement. it had to be generic. because even if sal wasn't one of them, it had to be ok for random people to know. he sure couldn't say he first saw maggie in heels and underwear. or that she stole his money from a client they shared. oh paul... luca wondered how that bottom-feeder was living with a few less fingers than what he had started with. it occurred to luca that they were still holding hands, he let go for a moment and put the hand on the back of her shoulder. "i am a horrible storyteller," he said as he slid his hand down her side until it rested on the curve of her hip. he looked at her. "you should tell, babe. you always tell it better than i do."

MAGDELENA "MAGGIE" CORINTHOSLOS ANGELES CALI, BLACK TIE BENEFIT, DECEMBER 2007 -----maggie hated to admit it, but under any other circumstances maggie would have loved this whole thing. the stuffiness of the whole even wouldn't have even crossed her mind. just being here, in the public's eye, associated with known criminals. though a lot of people would just think of her as the arm candy she was intended to look like, she would still be seen. that way if there was any of her involvement in the future, after getting out of this stupid engagement fiasco, she would walk into a room and people would know she was there for more than show. she was there for business. people would recognize her and realize that she'd been at "that black tie thing" and would have assumed she'd been working since then. and those people would be right. not only would she be seen as involved in the business, but people would know her associates and take her seriously. so yes, under any other circumstances she would have been lapping at this like a dog. she would have loved it. and in reality when she stopped hating luca for a moment to just think about it all, she did love it and she did come to realize it. but having luca on her arm made it no easier to think about. he was like chinese water torture. he was always there and she could never get away. the only option she had was to blow this engagement out of the water and unless the bain of her existence actually put up and played like he loved her, it wasn't going to happen. she would wind up miserable for the rest of her life and all because of him. of course as the years went by he would blame her, she would blame him, and eventually one person would crack and someone would wind up dead. that was a wonderful life to look forward to, really it was, but maggie wanted something a little more suited to her standards if that wasn't too much to ask.
-----in the end maggie knew exactly what she wanted. she'd been planning it ever since she was a little girl and her father had told her that she would be nothing, would amount to nothing, and would never get a whiff of the business. way to build up your child's dream, eh dad? but maggie had never taken his words into any serious consideration. how could she trust the opinion of a man whom she was smarter than and had pretty much surpassed in every way but power. no maggie had planned it all. she would become a valuable member of a mob-like business, be it her father's or someone else's. she would rise in the ranks until she was satisfied and she would kick some serious illegal ass. eventually, or from boredom, maggie would find someone suitable for her tastes, meaning he could keep up with her, and would marry. but it would always end one way, she'd have a ring on her finger because she was in love. not because a pair of old bastards told her to. no, none of this was right. it couldn't just end up this way, miserable, attached to a person she despised. no none of this was a part of her plan and she was going to make sure none of it ever came true. if that meant playing all of this up to the best of her ability and pretend that she loved the very ground he walked on. that much she could at least suffer through. it was all for the sake of the audience so why the hell not. it would have been better if her damned father was here. though juan corinthos sr. may have taken the memo and gotten out of town before his daughter brought the police down on him, it would have made this whole ordeal end much sooner if he could see them two together, acting happy. hell it would have probably been over already if it had been the two cronies in luca's loft instead of his clingy, desperate ex-girlfriend.
-----she kept up with luca plenty as he tried to rush them forward, a faint smile growing on her lips as luca kissed her knuckles. "oh how sweet." she said sweetly as his hand gripped hers harder than what most people would deem normal. she was in total acting mood now. there would be no bitter, sarcastic comments. there would be no angry glares of subtle stepping on toes as she walked. maggie was going to play this so effing well it would make luca's head spin. all of this despite the fact that she royally wanted to gag at the words 'i love you, babe.' lord please kill her now. she slid her free hand atop luca's as they walked through the ballroom. she noticed the eyes but kept her gaze either forward or on luca, both for random increments of time. was there anyone better for this than maggie? she was after all the most cunning, most calculated, and most analytical person in the corinthos organization. she supposed luca was just lucky that maggie was the eldest. after all it could have been worse. he could have been married off to her sixteen year old sister. god what a travesty that would be, not to mention how disgusting it would be. maggie was by far the best likely person that luca could end up in this mess with. she wasn't the type to lay down and just take defeat. she wasn't the type to not go down swinging. that meant that luca had a chance of getting out of this and moving on with his pathetic life. maggie could be free too, but she could do this with just about anyone. luca on the other fact, probably would only be staring down an engagement had it been with any other family.
-----she smiled genuinely as they approached a protly older man who looked dead at her the moment her last name was mentioned. ooh how wonderful. she shook his hand before returning to luca's side, as if they were magnets. "it is a pleasure seƱor moretti." she said effortlessly, a trace of her spanish accent flowing through her words. though she could hide her accent wonderfully on any given day, it made it all the more believable that she was the daughter of a mexican drug cartel's leader when she spoke with hints of spanish. she was just playing the game, nothing new. 'how did you two meet?' maggie had a feeling she was going to wind up hating those words by the end of the night, or by the end of this sham of an engagement. and of course luca would love nothing more than an opportunity to fuck with her so he directed the attention maggie's way. what. a. shock. she snuggled closer to him as his hand slid to her hip, her head cocking to the side playfully as a seemingly real playful smile crossed her lips. "it was honestly nothing out of the ordinary." she said as she looked into his eyes, the hint of pure adoration sounded completely real as she spoke. oh yes, she was good. she slid her hand across his stomach, making the engagement ring all the more visible. "we met in some coffee shop downtown. completely out of character for me because i'm not a fan of hanging out downtown, but we just met in line. we had to wait forever for the baristas to make our orders and we just got to talking. the place was packed with only one table left so we just shared it. wound up talking for hours and we just clicked." she gave luca one last longing glance before she looked at sal and the surrounding audience. "for once i'm glad i went downtown." she said with a chuckle, hearing a few others from the crowd chuckle as well.

( LUCA. ANGELO. GIOVANNI. )( I NEED TO BREATHE I CAN'T BELIEVE )( I THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I FALL ASLEEP ) ----HE PUT THE STORY ON MAGGIE. he knew she was good. it'd take a lot for him to tell her that, but he just liked the fact that he could tell her what to do. he would just have her think of some bogus story of how they met right off the top of her head. so... it was at a coffee shop? far from flea bit shit hole they really met in. as she told the story he looked adoringly at her, his expression faking the memory. he even glanced at fausto who seemed to slightly nod, approving the story. luca noticed that they weren't just talking to sal moretti anymore and that, in fact, a few more people gathered around. luca looked over to fausto again who had already noticed the growing crowd. he was pleased, luca could tell. the faster fausto started to believe that maybe luca and maggie could be falling for each other, the better. fausto knew the obvious dislike the two had for each other. luca had been very defiant that day when his uncle and maggie's dad delivered the news. after the incident with london, maggie asked luca to please just pretend that they were in love. she said that if her father saw that this was something she wanted, he might call it off. luca had agreed even though he had his doubts. big doubts. he gave into her only to say that they tried. tried because luca felt like this marriage thing was going to happened anyway. he'd rather just take it than fight it and risk losing what he had already done for his family. sometimes, you just had to sacrifice something to gain a lot.
"for once i'm glad i went downtown." a few chuckles from the crowd made luca look back at her and smile. "and i got my coffee and the girl." a few more chuckles and luca kissed maggie's temple. "sometimes," he said, looking directly at her, "you just know." after a beat of looking at her, he turned mainly back to sal. "we were just lucky our family's blessed our wishes to marry." it was a simple statement that had a double meaning. while everyone else just thought they were traditional and were in their family's good graces, sal knew exactly what luca meant. that both fausto and juan sr. were on the same page and this was exactly what it looked like. a perfect opportunity to make allies. any gangs in the west better look out because the giovannis and the corinthos' just got that much more powerful. luca felt fausto's hand on his shoulder and he said a few things like how maggie was going to be a great addition and that yes, the young couple were planning on marrying soon. after the new year. it was a slow countdown to the end. for him, it could damn be 2012 and maggie was the end.
fausto showed them off more, the affections seemed to come easier as the night progressed. maggie was attached to his hip for so long, luca grew tired with his hand in hers or his arm wrapped around her waist. he hated being this openly affectionate. when he was with london, they were never like this. they were together and people knew it. luca didn't have to show anyone that he was dating her. he knew they were dating and that was enough for him. they met some doctors, some more giovanni affiliates, and other people. they must have kept this up for a painstakingly long hour. all the fake smiles and small talk. they continued to lie to everyone, saying how much they loved each other. luca could feel that she was still so pissed at him. he didn't get it though. why was she so upset that luca "slept" with london? she knew he had a history with her, she had been his ex. yeah, they were engaged, but it wasn't like maggie and luca were going to get down and dirty ever, so maggie shouldn't have gotten pissed at him. he should be the bigger person and just tell her that he didn't sleep with london. the greatest thing about this pair? they were both extremely stubborn. that wasn't a very good trait for both of them posses.
at some point, they got separated as fausto told luca he needed to talk to him and alberto about something. as soon as fausto turned around and started waking over to alberto, luca turned to maggie. "coffee shop, really? you know i'd of loved for you to tell everyone when i met you, you were already half naked." he smoothed the front of his suit down and glanced around quickly. only a few people were looking over at them. "my uncle wants to talk buisiness, so... do me a favor and stay out of trouble." he ended this was kissing her on the cheek. people on the outside looking at them wouldn't have even of known he was subtly picking a fight. he lifted her chin with one hand, still doing it tenderly so no one would think something was up. they were a couple sharing a moment. "did anyone tell you that you were cuter when you weren't acting like a crazy bitch? who would have guessed?" he smirked and let go before turning his way over to his uncle and cousin.
when he reached them, he let out a sigh. his facade of a exciting young man getting married disappearing. he gave alberto a tight and quick embrace, having not seen him in awhile. "engaged, huh?" luca nodded. no one besides fausto, juan sr, maggie, and himself knew about the arrangement. "yup. couldn't be happier." fausto was situated in the middle of luca and al and all he did was nod, not really contributing to it. "alberto found out that some of the weapon-dealing in africa is connected to your case in chicago." he wasn't wasting any time here. nothing beat talking business at a benefit in front of people. luca looked at al, who nodded and swirled around his flute full of champagne. "i want you two to go to chicago next week. work together. if their stealing my goods i want to know why, how, and when." fausto didn't look at either of them and took a swig of whatever he was drinking from the bar. the two young men agreed to it and there was silence for a moment, all luca could hear was people talking and the orchestra playing. "luca, why don't you ask maggie to dance? i don't want her to be bored tonight." luca grimaced, but covered it up when alberto looked up at him. their last dance ended in a fight. they were pissed at each other, and just pretended for the past hour they were the happiest people in the room. "yeah, yeah, ok," he said and searched the crowd for her. he spotted her sitting at a table near the edge of the dance floor. she was at a table with paolo. on his way over to the table, luca grabbed a glass of red wine from a server's plate and downed it in a few swigs before placing it on a random table.
"i don't know what's going on. i really don't care, but i just want to tell you something," paolo explained to maggie, who had joined his lonely table not more than ten minutes ago. "luca doesn't like showing much emotion. he wants this life so bad, that he only shows one side of himself, which sometimes isn't his best side. the other side though... it might surprise you." paolo shrugged and looked around the room. "i'm not interrupting anything, am i?" luca asked as he approached. paolo shook his head. "not at all, luc. just telling maggie here how i think i discovered what this night was benefiting... cancer research. cliche, isn't it?" luca shook his head and smiled, but then directed his attention to maggie. he held out his hand for her to take. "time to dance." no question in there at all. once she gave him her hand, he pulled her off her seat and the two started walking not just on the dance floor, the middle of the dance floor. as he lead her to the center, he could hear the soft sounds of a piano playing. he grew up listening to classical music. he knew immediately what the song was. 'el tango de roxanne' was his mother's favorite. he would recognize it anywhere. in addition to the classical music, it was a good thing all the giovanni children took dance lessons when they were younger. luca knew the formal stance in ballroom dancing.
once he reached the spot he wanted to stand he turned and pulled maggie sharply towards him, his hand sliding alongside her back until it rested in the center, holding his elbow up so her free hand wrapped around his shoulder. just as the sharp violin and cello started playing and luca moved forward, he asked quietly so only she could hear, "i have to ask. why are you still pissed?"

MAGDELENA "MAGGIE" CORINTHOSLOS ANGELES CALI, BLACK TIE BENEFIT, DECEMBER 2007 -----upon first glance it was hard to see that maggie could very well be a catch. alright so it was really hard to see what with the snide remarks and the bitter anger toward luca it seemed damn near impossible but she could be a catch when you really got down to it. if you couldn't tell already, she was fierce. she put her whole heart into something she wanted, even if it didn't appear that way from an outsider's perspective. what people didn't see was the real, true passion that she had for this business and all that it entailed. she wouldn't have let herself stick around for so long if she hadn't loved what she was doing, and she did. she really, really did love this life. it was like being more than one person, or playing more than one role. there was the cover side, like tonight, where all of the giovannis were out in tuxes and standing front and center amongst the people. it was better than spending your life in the shadows, maggie could assume, and it was fun to play off your whole life as if it was all just one big rumor. you weren't actually as dangerous as the world thought you were. it kept people guessing, something that her father had never even attempted to do. juan never liked leaving his business. which was one of the things that had shocked her most when he'd showed up and stayed for as long as he had. juan thought that without his presence he would be taken over. so like a hermit with a fear of sunlight, juan hardly ever left the "compound" he referred to as a home. but this? this was something maggie could get used to. it added to the intrigue of the business. because when they weren't playing it up for the normal population, they, meaning giovannis and other such mobsters, were some of the most low down, dangerous, maniacal people you would ever be unfortunate enough to meet. who wouldn't love such a double life? it was like being a spy, only evil.
-----and maggie did fiercely love this life and everything that came with it. she loved the danger, the adrenaline rush, the power, the strength, and the stomach it took to do the kinds of things that she did. sure other unknowing people would frown upon her lifestyle choice, but those people would be dealt with soon enough. nothing else about that mattered as long as she was in where she wanted to be. being here tonight, in the midst of giovanni life, it felt for the first time like maggie was actually a part of something. she was no longer just the shameful daughter being used for her cunning, she was a valuable part of the team. luca didn't know it, but pawning that story off on her was the highlight of her night. it was a time when she visibly had control of the situation around very influential people. it was everything she'd been working for for over five years. but no one could see the inner excitement, not even luca. no one could see that she was doing somersaults at this major opportunity, more so when she didn't blow it. though she still hated him, the feelings that she was pretending to portray, in that small moment, almost didn't feel scripted. they almost felt...real? 'and i got my coffee and the girl.' maggie blushed slightly, a bit overwhelmed by the freedom and power she'd had over the situation to control herself. that blush, damn it, was real. thankfully she was sure he hadn't seen it as he kissed her temples. she stayed by his side as he turned back to the crowd, happy just to look to her right at the whole crowd. well that hadn't been so bad. lord knows it could have been worse but for their first attempt ti was a fairly good try. from there it only got easier. of course the conversations were different, and maggie had control of herself by then, but it was still pretty much the same chatter. still, maggie didn't mind it. the realization about what this night meant for her had begun to sink in around the third or fourth crowd fausto had introduced them to and maggie was actually starting to have a decent time. minus the fact that deep down she was still royally pissed at luca.
-----then it was back to business, something that maggie couldn't be a part of. it didn't bring the anger to surface, maggie was used to way worse from her father, but it did kind of snap her back into reality. "yes i'm sure i would have had the crowd on the edge of their seats but it's not really the kind of normal first meeting your uncle was looking for." she helped smooth out his jacket, keeping up appearances. she looked up at him as she had no other choice as his hand eased her chin up so her gaze locked on his. as he spoke a slight flicker of anger shown in her eyes, but nothing that the surrounding audience could see. "who would have known." she said with a faint smile before luca dropped his hand and walked away. maggie smoothed a hand over her hair before she found a seat at the table nearest the dance floor, the only one that had been free of people. god what the hell was that? maggie knew they were playing it up for the crowd but now that she was away from him, maggie got a chance to put herself in check. she could just breathe and get her bearings and the world would be right again. she would be back to hating him underneath the facade that she adored him. that was how it was supposed to be. that wasn't reality. she waved down a passing tray and grabbed a fluke of chardonnay, sipping at it lightly despite the fact that she wanted to pack it away like it was going out of style. when she set her glass down on the table, maggie was a little surprised to see paolo taking a close seat. he started talking to her about luca, and the many sides of himself that he didn't show. under normal circumstances that would have had her snorting a sarcastic retort, but she was the adoring future wife. that would be a bit, uncanny of her to do so now. "it's hard to believe i know." she said with a smirk as she looked over at the younger giovanni. he wasn't fooled, but she still had to keep up the act.
-----she really wanted to laugh as luca approached and paolo covered up his story. how cute. as he extended his hand, maggie looked at it for a moment. after hearing his reason she took his hand and was lifted off the hard wooden seat. so much for standing. dancing...did her future partner in crime really know what he was getting himself into? maggie had no idea how much luca knew about dancing, but she knew how good she was. she knew she wasn't going to be doing any of that lame high school shuffling back and forth with her arms linked around his neck. maggie was a mover, and she moved quite well. the sound of the shrill violin cued her into whate song was playing and it made her smile, the first real smile of the night. little did anyone know, dancing was a bit of a weakness to maggie. not that she couldn't dance, just that she tended to go all out and put her whole self into it. dancing was a great outlet for her and she hadn't gotten to dance in such a long time. tonight was more of a treat than she ever let onto, but she was afraid that in the dance it would show. she effortlessly spun into him, a smirk crossing her lips as his hand slid down her back. it wasn't so much his touch as it was joy that she was partnered with someone who knew how to dance. thank. god. she moved with him, her feet walking as if on air as she balanced herself on the balls of her feet as opposed to her heels, like real dancers did. she was so entranced by the dance that she'd almost forgotten that luca had said something. what was it he'd asked? oh yeah..."how long it takes me to get over something is really none of your concern. i guess my question for you is was it worth it? because if anyone else had walked in this little sham would be over and you would be stuck with me. no one would believe our story if they'd seen you shacking up with some other slut." she said quietly under her breath, her feet moving back and forth with the rhythm as she spun out and back into his grasp, her back pressed to him, his hand resting on her stomach as they continued to dance.

( LUCA. ANGELO. GIOVANNI. )( I NEED TO BREATHE I CAN'T BELIEVE )( I THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I FALL ASLEEP ) ----ALL THE BOY GIOVANNIS hated having to go to dance class when they were younger. most of them were born in italy and at least spent a few years in italy. luca and his cousins all had to go to dance class and etiquette class. it was tiring and boring as hell when all luca had wanted to do was run around and play in the mud. he learned how to tell a salad fork from a dinner fork. He also knew the order of all the silverware in a five-course dinner. then there was the dance class that luca really only paid attention to half the time. when his family moved to england, he thought he escaped those nightmarish lessons, but his parents enrolled him in classes there too now including an instrument. he might have been demoted to only playing 'hot crossed buns' on the piano, but that damn dancing and posture class has stuck with him. some of it had come in handy. his conversation skills in situations like tonight paid off. he wasn't a class 'a' dancer by all means, but it was a little bit of a secret weapon. something he could whip out if it was called on. and it was tonight. luca didn't know what kind of prior dancing experience maggie had, but he was just assuming she had some. the way she carried herself was a giveaway. not that he was studying her or anything, he could just tell. one thing she probably didn't expect is that luca knew what he was doing too. he knew how to count, he knew the song, and he knew not to step on her feet. he wondered is maggie would let him lead, since luca knew the man always led in a dance. see? he wasn't the only sexist. the dance people knew what was up.
by the first few eight counts that ticked by, he knew that she knew that this wasn't some bullshit dance. that this was for real. the way she spun, the way he guided her with his arms, it was all about communication and teamwork. this was ironic since maggie and luca had yet to actually look like a team. somehow, they had no problem moving around on the dance floor, falling in step with each other as the violin did it's thing. "...no one would believe our story if they'd seen you shacking up with some other slut." his hand tightened on hers as she said this to him, she spun out and spun back into him, making close contact with each other. his arm wrapped around her stomach. his face was close to hers as he guided her a few steps forward, slowly. he mumbled into her hair, "so then, you're my first slut?" it had occurred to him at this point that they were being watched. they probably wouldn't have caught so much attention if he hadn't ushered them into the center of the dance floor. it also might have helped if fausto hadn't spent the last hour introducing them to over half the room because now from what luca could gather as he concentrated on the dance with maggie, people were sitting at tables whispering and looking. people gathered in groups seemed to have stopped their previous conversations and directed their attention to dance floor. the dance floor in which had been subsequently cleared as he saw the older couples that once shared the floor with them had sunk away to the edges. it was like they didn't want to compare or take the spotlight of this new couple that looked like they knew what they were doing.
when luca spotted fausto, his tongue caught in his throat. not because his uncle looked appalled, but because for once, luca couldn't read his uncle's face at all. no stone-cold expression people feared or the happy family man one he had displaying most of the night. he was just watching. luca could tell fausto was just trying to figure things out. he didn't quite understand what was going on, or if this was a good thing or a bad thing. luca believed it was a bad thing. they were pissed at each other, and so they were dancing to a song that was filled with angry passion. that was smart, wasn't it? it was uncanny that it fit their relationship right at that moment. angry, tired, and yet, they shared a moment that burned in their brains forever. that kiss that wasn't really hateful considering it happened out of the blue and not in front of anyone for a show.
luca let go of his hold on her stomach and spun her out again, before drawing her back in, roughly this time, their bodies thumping together as immediately luca felt her leg curl around the back of his leg. he held a tight grip on her waist, the other hold her hand high above this heads. he stared at her for a moment before her upper body dipped backwards and back up again. her leg slid down his and back to the floor and luca spun them in a couple wide circle. if they had the whole damn floor, might as well start using it. her steps were quicker than his, but at least with the tempo it all evened out. he felt her leg again and this time he grabbed it, right above the knee and worked his way up toward her outside thigh. his stare was intent as he wasn't really smiling. "sounds like someone is a little jealous." her leg returned and he dipped her down, like they did in the movies. he debated whether to just drop her. he did have that power to just drop to the ground and walk away. "so, unless you want to sleep with me, i suggest you just mind your own business."

MAGDELENA "MAGGIE" CORINTHOSLOS ANGELES CALI, BLACK TIE BENEFIT, DECEMBER 2007 -----dancing was just another part of maggie's culture. it wasn't something she'd ever had to take lessons for, or something so formal as going to a studio to take lessons. it was something that you just grew up with in the house. she'd learned all kinds of latin dances from the sultry to the more stuffy kind of ballroom dances, but it was just another part of her life. like breathing, dancing came naturally. her hips moved with the beat, the circular motion of the dance was nothing short of a boat rocking on the seas. it was effortless, it was easy, but at the same time it was something that maggie enjoyed. it was a lot easier dancing with someone who actually knew how to dance. having to move around someone who wasn't well versed made life difficult. sure, maggie could play it off as nothing, because she knew she could outmaneuver just about anyone, but having to make quick movements to avoid getting your feet trampled was not as much fun as dancing with someone who knew such dances as the tango or the rumba. instead of trying to keep her toes intact, maggie could instead just kind of let herself go, feel the rhythm, and have that sense of freedom she was so surely lacking in her life at the moment. had they not been keeping up a conversation that was completely contradictory to the way dancing made maggie feel, she might have actually enjoyed this moment. she had learned the tango from a maid in the corinthos house actually. since her mother was what maggie always liked to call the "stupid american" maggie was left to learn all the culture from the staff working within the house. she didn't mind it. she'd learned from the house maid alma. the pudgy aging woman was lighter on her feet than maggie would have ever suspected. she'd taught her everything she knew about dancing and had even roped j.r. into being a partner once or twice.
-----even though it was nice dancing with someone who at least had a clue, her present company was kind of giving her the opposite effect that dancing did. the tango was a dance of passion, true blue, angry, lustful passion. it was the wrong choice of dance for the two of them that much was a given. the last thing maggie and luca needed was a lustful passionate dance. they'd already played out that situation twice before and it had never lead to anything good. who was to say that the third time was a charm? it wasn't. maggie already knew deep down that they would never get along and that whatever feeble attraction there was would have to be squelched and soon. maggie didn't need someone like luca in her life. she didn't need a stupid, selfish, sexist pig looking over her shoulder twenty four seven and making her feel terrible about her involvement in the business. she didn't need yet another man tell her she couldn't so what she wanted to do. whether he knew it or not luca was a lot like her father and that was one trait that maggie did not find attractive in the least bit. no what she needed was to get this dance over with so she could leave. staying here, exposing herself to this life, it was all great, but she couldn't risk yet another head butting session with luca. not in front of all of these people. it would severely ruin the "engagement" ploy and then where would they be? she sucked in a sharp breath as luca squeezed her hand. hit a nerve? london was a slut and maggie would say that till the day she died. her teeth clacked together as luca spoke. well damn. she certainly hadn't worded that well. "funny. no, i'm simply sure that she's one out of a long line of your personal whores." she said under her breath so subtly that her lips barely even moved. unless someone from the audience was standing in their path, they wouldn't hear their conversation which happened to be completely contradictory to a story of love.
-----it was hard not to see all of the people watching, seeing as how maggie was faced out toward the crowd as opposed to facing luca. from her vantage point maggie could also see older less dance-equipped couples removing themselves from the dance floor. she and luca practically had the entire area that had been portioned off for dancers. wonderful. this was the perfect time to be the center of all the fucking attention. she was happy for the opportunity to spin out once again. at least this time she could face luca and not have to see teh faces of the near hundred people watching them like they were paid entertainment. she spun back in, a little more rough and real than the first time, her leg hitching over his as her body met his. one little slip and this dance could have been over with luca crumpled on the floor. oh what a pleasant thought that one was. as much as she fought it, her eyes locked on his for a moment. a moment that seemed to last longer in her mind than what was reality, but still too long for maggie's sanity. as if she had removed her own spine and gone limp, maggie dipped backwards, quickly retracting and bringing herself upright to meet luca once again. they made a wide circle and maggie found herself plastered to him once again, her leg hooked over his and his hand easily sliding up her thigh. though she fought it, and fought it hard, a shiver coursed through her veins and gave her goosebumps. she had to blink a time or two to wash away the shock that he had that kind of effect on her body. damn it. this was bad. and the worst part was she was realizing it at the worst possible time. "am not." she said before he dipped her, but her voice wasn't as sure as maggie had prayed it would sound. in fact it was a rather pathetic statement if she had anything to say about it. and she would have plenty to say about it...later.
-----she leaned back as he dipped her again, her head sharply looking up at him as he spoke. "go. to. hell." she said pointedly, bringing herself upright. she snaked her hands up his chest, "pushing" him backwards still as a part of the dance. as they made their way across the dance floor her hands found his once again. she was surprised that they'd remained on beat as she made a circular motion with her feet, a mere few inches between them as she expertly did footwork around his legs. she dipped low to the ground, one leg shooting out behind her before luca yanked her back up, spinning her around right in front of him. she faced him once again, that angry spark in her eyes as they locked on his once again. "i don't want to talk about this any more. it's final. once this whole thing is over i don't have to give a shit about what you do but you are not screwing this up for me. i am not going to wind up married to you because you cannot control yourself." she said as they made another wide circle around the dance floor finally coming to an abrupt stop where maggie faced the crowd, a leg over one of his once again, her hand on his neck. they spun once, twice, and then stopped, their bodies melded together but leaning out toward the audience. "i just want this over with." she confessed as her leg fell back to the floor and she faced luca. she didn't look him in the eye. she didn't want to as well as she just couldn't bring herself to.

( LUCA. ANGELO. GIOVANNI. )( I NEED TO BREATHE I CAN'T BELIEVE )( I THINK ABOUT YOU WHEN I FALL ASLEEP ) ----LUCA SMIRKED WHEN SHE TOLD HIM THAT london was only one in a long line of personal whores. though, the smirk dropped just as fast as it had arrived and he focused on her once again. she was unbelievable. luca didn't need whores. and really, he might seem like a sexist pig... or well, he was kind of a sexist pig, but maggie made it sound like he tended to degrade all women. see, that's where his sexist thing was all wrong.he was really only sexist towards women that thought they could weasel their way into the organized crime business. it was a male-dominated life and really, it should stay that way. if women had their way, this wouldn't be as successful as it was today. no offense to his aunt annora, but luca really didn't think she could run the giovanni empire. and it was just for organized crime either. why did kings always rule and queens didn't (besides those selected few?) why were men always sworn into presidency? he was just pointing this stuff out. it was just a society thing. luca really couldn't care less if the american president was a male or a female, because, he didn't follow the rules anyways, so it didn't matter to him. luca had the upmost respect for women like london, or the models he had photoshoots with. they weren't worming their way into this exclusive gentlemens' club luca was a part of. it just sometimes pissed him off that if you went too easy on them, they could kick your ass, but god forbid, if you were to hit them back, all of a sudden you'd be labeled a women beater. luca hated that because he was so far from abusing women.
luca was very aware of how... what was the right word for this? sensual maybe? the tango in itself is suppose to be a very fiery passionate dance. it was scary how easily the two had stepped into this dance with no prior rehearsal. it was all improv. and it wasn't awkward improve either. luca had to admit, it was good improv. they were still getting their argumentative quips in here and there without missing a beat while dancing. he might actually be proud of them and this little unplanned scheme if he wasn't angry with her. luca could feel the energy rippling on his skin and through his suit. it wasn't good energy either. it was like that angry passion was seeping through and he really couldn't help it. the way they hands were often gripped tightly together. their bodies molding into one for a brief moment as he guided her around the floor. but even so, when she twirled and spun away from him, it was a hungry need to bring her back towards him and he had no idea why. it was a battle. more than one too. they was the two of them, maggie and luca. pushing pulling, pushing pulling. want, don't want, want don't want. it was a dance of teasing really when you broke it down, because every time he thought he had her, she was slipping away from his grasp. the second battle was of course, with himself. every time he thought he could just quit this little charade, he knew he couldn't. he wanted to get out with himself, but he couldn't. people were watching, his uncle, was watching.
"am not." another sly grin on luca's part. she sounded like a little girl trying to convince him that she wasn't. this was shortly followed by maggie telling him to go to hell for even mentioning that she wanted to sleep with him. "as you can clearly see, i am already here." she felt her arms fall over his chest and pushed him. yes, she actually pushed him. at first, he thought she was being typical maggie. he pushed one too many buttons and she just snapped. but she caught up to him and grabbed his hands. yeah... he should have known by now that she kept the act up until the last person would leave. only luca had this little pleasure of one moment being the one she loved the most and then the one she hated the most. they worked out perfect choreography on the floor, her leg shooting out behind her as she dipped down in a lunge. they hands still clapsed together, he pulled her up, her body sliding against his like silk sheets on a bed. but then she had to go into this long mini rant about their marriage... again. and she had the nerve to say that he didn't know how to control himself.
her hand was wrapped around his neck, her leg curled behind her around him, and luca supporting her upper body with his arm wrapped around her ribcage and she had to say that he had no control? they were like old married couple and they weren't even married yet. all he wanted to do was shake her until all her stupid remarks fell out. she spun and leaned towards the audience in a longing moment. another twirl and she was facing him, but this time, she wasn't looking at him in the eye. "i just want this over with." he knew what she meant in the literal sense even though the song itself was about to end, the hard instrument playing leading up to the final note. luca's hands left hers and he secured his around her waist. he effortlessly lifted her up. it wasn't extravagant at all, more of just a lift, turn one hundred eight degrees and back down. from her waist, his hands slid all the way back up the side of her ribs, through her arms and met her hands above their heads. she spun one away from him, again into him as he switched the balance in his feet to lean more toward the left. this way when she came back into him, she was leaning with him, their bodies facing the audience but their faces faced on each other. having listened to the song hundred of times with his mother, (was it ironic that this song was essentially about a whore?) he knew exactly when it ended and timed it perfectly that when the last note rang out she leaned into him.
luca heard the applause. everyone had been watching without taking a breath. but, he didn't care about putting on some damn show. "there," he said, not letting her go yet, "it's over with." an arm barely clearing her chest he held her tight against him for one more moment, before letting go. he had the decency to at least let her gain her footing before he let go of her completely. he looked up at the crowd and smiled, waved, and at least tried to look surprised that everyone in the room was watching them dance. he turned to maggie, "i think we should go. i have about five of my whores lined up to have sex with me tonight and time's a wasting."

MAGDELENA "MAGGIE" CORINTHOSLOS ANGELES CALI, BLACK TIE BENEFIT, DECEMBER 2007 -----it almost saddened maggie when she thought of how much she could have enjoyed this moment. not with her partner of choice, but who the hell cared. it was dancing, it was in front of valuable business associates, it was everything she'd wanted it to be. so why couldn't she just enjoy it all? for one thing this was all an act. had she been allowed to come alone maggie would have had the time of her life. that much was a given. you see as a child she'd been extremely sheltered on top of all the rest of the crap juan corinthos sr. heaped upon her. she wasn't allowed to leave the compound, wait i mean house, unless it was under strict supervision. even then it was not always permitted. mexico was a dangerous place filled with dangerous, power0hungry people. now maggie's first thought would be "hey my kind of people." but when their guns pointed in your direction it was a whole different story. mexico had been a mess since before she was born. there had been drug cartels building both in power and in sheer size for decades but nothing had really brimmed over until the early eighties. by that time every person in the family that juan held dear had to stay in a place that had security and protection. one would have thought that he would have just pushed his daughter out the front door and said "hey, have at her" but no. instead he harbored her, fed her, and all that jazz. because she was supposed to owe him later on in life when she came to appreciate what he had done for her. well that time had come and went and there was still no appreciation. that left juan bitter, angry, and out for revenge. on his own daughter nonetheless. what a winner seriously.
-----but moments like these, events like these, were rare. they were so rare maggie had heard of them, watched her father leave in his barricade to attend an event, and even seen the outside of the building of one of these events, but she'd never gone. she'd sworn to herself that one day she would be there, in one of those building, chatting up powerful people and actually making valid points to these people. she had imagined something like this. and now here she was, and though she wanted so terribly to be happy that she'd finally reached this moment, she felt none of it. all she could feel was the tension of the dance, the tension between the two of them, and the absolute bitter taste in her mouth that came from pointless arguments with luca. why did she even bother? this asshole didn't give a rat's ass about her and would rather see her banged up and bloodied in a hole than participating in the slightest. she was sick of it. so completely sick of all of it. as soon as this night was over she was going to sit herself down, think of something that would work over her father good enough for him to retract his prior "engagement" idea, act it out and get the fuck out of this mess. had she known that this was what she had to look forward to upon moving to valkyrie, maggie would have picked up some other way because nothing was worth the stomach-flipping nausea, discomfort, and complete lack of trust between herself and her so called "partner." it was useless and maggie was done trying. she was going to end it once and for all...just as soon as this dance was over.
-----and he was already in hell? psha. all the crap had happened was a simple annoyance. it was a blurry blip in the radar screen of his life, a simple bump in the road. this was what maggie dealt with on a daily basis, shit from her father, she didn't need it from all angles now and that was all luca was good for. he was in hell? try living her life and see how much of it will drive you to the brink of your sanity. but she kept the act up. she continued to dance with him despite the fact that she would rather leave him to prance around on his own and make himself look like an idiot. haha, she could only imagine. she figured he would look something like a high-stepping poodle, walking out onto a dog show stage or a rooster stomping about for show. that was easy enough to picture and damn near made her smile. well for two people who had never danced together before, they were doing one hell of a job. good thing they were good seeing as the entire event's worth of people were watching them like hawks. what like they'd never seen people dance before? she faced him after a lean into the audience, still unable to look him in the eyes. god what the hell was wrong with her. she picked the damnedest times to have vulnerable moments. what she needed right now as to be alone, or be without luca. any of the above options would suit her sanity much, much better than her current situation.
-----she spun out one last time, retracting back into his grasp for the final little trick. her breathing was heavier than she'd expected it to be, as if this dance had had some effect on her or something else as cliche and stupid as what one would see in the movies. well maggie had one thing to say about that...bull. "oh goody." maggie said as her feet found the floor, immediately stepping away from him. still she had a smile on her face as if all of this had been planned. a small, and i mean minute, little curtsy-esque movement and shuffled away from luca. he was saying something but she hadn't cared to listen. what. a. shock. instead of listening to him babble on she crossed the floor to fausto, her hands slipping into his as she pecked him on the cheek. "if you don't mind, i think the spinning has gone to my head. i would like to leave a little early." she looked into his eyes, saying with her eyes what she wouldn't say aloud, i'm getting the fuck out of here whether you like it or not. "thank you for inviting me, it was a wonderful evening." she gave his hands a slight squeeze before she took a step back and walked around him, headed toward the exit fiance-less. she stopped at the coat check to grab her jacket and headed outside. she would call a cab if she had to but one way or another she was not staying at this benefit any longer. she sucked in a quick gulp of cool air, letting the chill calm her nerves as a valet appeared. "call me a cab ple-" she turned at the sound of the doors opening to see luca...yet again. "never mind." she said as luca took his time giving his ticket to the valet. she was in the car the moment it arrived, silent as she had been on the ride here.
