OVERALL PERSONALITY: it’s not easy being a crab fisherman. from the very first day you get to port everything feels like running around like a chicken with your head cut off. there's always the set up, hauling bait in and grinding frozen fish pieces for bait blocks. everything is rushed from the moment you arrive. it gets hectic after a while. once you're out on the ocean things tend to get worse. that's where a good personality can come in handy. when you grind for thirty some odd hours pulling pot after pot (be it empty or chock full) the nerves tend to wear thin. it's his personality that gets him through because after a long grind, wes is the first person to crack jokes or pull pranks that put smiles on the weary faces of his deck mates.
wes loves to see people smile because a smile is a whole hell of a lot more enjoyable then watching someone's anger or misery. a smile tends to mean you've brightened up someone else’s day. though it was never really meant to be his life's meaning to make other people happy, but wes has found that in doing so he also helps himself out a little bit and that always makes it a little more worthwhile in the end. his jokes are usually terrible. they're the level of bad that rivals with cheesy pick up lines you find on the internet. the kind that are so stupid you just have to laugh unless you have no sense of humor whatsoever. though he tries not to come across as someone who can't be taken seriously, oftentimes that is still the case. because wes tries so hard to make people smile, it's often a strange occurrence when he is sincere. it actually tends to freak people out. if you ever see him at the bar while the boat is unload it's tanks, and you see him hunched over with a half empty bottle in his hand, minus that goofy smile, well it's often hard to approach him.
no one likes taking him seriously. it's like a joke book that turns into the da vinci code at a certain page. it's strange, it's unexpected, and it makes you want to flip back a page or two and make sure it really did what you thought it did. wes' serious times aren't all that frequent so it tends to freak people out even more in the case that it does happen. usually it only occurs around people he knows really well, like his family for instance. wesley likes to joke around with them more often than act serious as well, but his family is more inclined to listen when the jokes, pranks, and the crazy antics calm down. also he usually only tones it down when he has something important to say to a girlfriend. but since all he has it exes at the moment, that's really of no concern.
wesley isn't one of those kinds of guys to be inconsiderate of other peoples feelings. if you are sitting on a bench in the park crying your eyes out, he's not going to come over and prank you. sure he'll sit down beside you, make a little joke just to break the ice and whatnot, but he doesn't just expect people to drop whatever it is they are feeling and laugh at or with him. and he knows when a battle cannot be won or when he should really just rake in his chips and go home. if after a while he is unsuccessful, wes will give up and wish you the best of luck.
he's a very intelligent young man. he graduated near to the top of his class but put off college because it was impossible for his family. he had tried to get the kind of scholarships that would pay for school on it's own but just because his grades were good didn't mean they were good enough. he would in part have to pay for some of his schooling and the family simply couldn't afford it. of course at that time wes had been under the assumption that his elder brother and his sister would be attempting to go to college as well. turned out that none of the triplets ended up going to college. but regardless, wes took a road trip with a few friends right after high school graduation. they were brilliant kids on their way to college and they were headed to the university of alaska and wanted to test the waters early, acclimate to the ball freezing temperatures and whatnot. wes had gone along just for kicks and giggles and wound up sticking around. while in a bar in juneau he met a crab boat skipper who offered him a job. it was mostly to test the boy and watch the frail little thing suffer but it turned out to work in wes' favor.
does he like forking over a majority of his cash to his family? at times yes and at times no. wes had seen his family struggle all of his life, more so when the triplet were younger and couldn't work. in the beginning it felt more like a duty to hand over his paychecks but he would see that it went toward food and such and he would feel better. if it was just going into his parent's vacation fund then that would be a different story. now that he's older, wes is starting to feel the burden of his family's needs. right now he has a stable yet grueling job, but if that ever falls through wes wants to know that he'll have something to fall back on. he also wants a life. spending his shore time with the folks is fine but some day when he meets the girl of his dreams he wants to know that they will be financially stable. he's kind of in a tough position and he's happier to put it off at the moment but he knows that the time is going to come when he's going to have to pull out and let his parents fend for themselves.
AND WE'LL BOTH GROW OLD ,[/color]

LIVING SITUATION: shaks.
HISTORY: the suttons were a prominent name back in keizer, oregon, a small city just outside of the salem limits. keizer is one of those small kinds of towns where everyone knows everything about one another. grandmothers had knitting clubs, mothers had garden parties, fathers were parts of golf clubs, etc. it was a town where you walked down the street and old folks on their porch would ask you about something that had just happened as you passed them by. everything traveled by word of mouth, and everything was always exhaustingly correct when passed on from one person to the other. thus it was that everyone knew that the sutton family was huge in keizer. the family practically settled the town way back when and had always been active in the community. the mayor had been a sutton all the way up until the 1950s when the last sutton mayor had stepped down to tend to his ailing family. they were huge to the community, often idolized, and definitely the talk of the town. they were the regular kennedy's of keizer, and the suttons had loved it. so everyone knew when emilia denton met charles sutton. they knew that they went to the same college, him studying architecture, her studying fashion design. they knew when they went on their first date to the island that sat in staats lake. they knew when they started getting serious, spending all kinds of time together. they knew when charles proposed in his sophomore year of college, and they knew she said yes. the entire town attending a lavish wedding that had generously been paid for by charles father, ellison sutton. they knew that emilia got pregnant on their honeymoon. they knew almost before she did, that they were having triplets.
being under constant watch and scrutiny from the town was difficult, but the suttons had nothing to hide and nothing to fear, that they knew of. it wasn't until three years later that emilia and charles world fell down around them. they'd been in the process of still finishing college, which had taken much longer since the birth of their triplets, when emilia discovered she was pregnant once again. happy, the family told the news at a massive weekly dinner that ellison held every friday night. attendance was pretty much a requirement if you had any trace of sutton blood in you. charles stood, told his news, and was in a slurry of congratulations when ellison collapsed to the floor. he was rushed to the hospital and found to have had a heart attack. he slipped into unconsciousness and slowly desintigrated until he passed three days later. ellison's death was the start of all of the hell for the sutton family. it was after his death that they discovered that he had been absolutely broke. the business that he controlled, that every sutton family member had invested in, was destitute and was forced to close taking with it all of the sutton's money and all of their respectability as well. charles was forced to drop out of college, getting a job as a construction worker and praying that he could scrape by. emilia got a job doing the only thing she was good at, sewing, and became a tailor at one of the local shops. all of the suttons had managed to scrape by, but they had officially fallen from grace in the eyes of the townspeople. instead of looking at them with admiration, people would see them and turn to one another, passing on another rumor that was anything but true.
growing up that way had been extremely hard for wes as a child. he had been about five years old when ellison died and had been old enough to know something was wrong, though not to what extent things were wrong. his parents hadn't been able to finish college as quickly since they had been juggling their kids and because of that they were forced into the menial kind of jobs that their schooling and degrees would have given them power over. wes could remember his parents coming home with aching limbs every day. they were miserable on the inside but they always put up a good show for the kids. not much later wes' youngest and final sister, carly, was born. by that time wes and his brother and sister were old enough to understand that this meant a lot of hard times for the family. after going to school he and his brother and sisters would spend their days over at the neighbor's house who agreed to watch them along with her own children until charles and emilia could come home and relieve her. it wasn't so bad. wes could play with other kids his age after getting home from school, something that every normal kid does with their neighbor friends. it was nothing out of the ordinary except for the few times when the sutton kids would have to eat dinner with the neighbors. they were some of the greatest people. they knew the single mindedness of the town just as well as the suttons would soon become aware of and they were happy to help them out. they were some of the more kind people within the keizer population.
wes grew up with a sense of pity. the entire community couldn't seem to understand that his family wasn't one to feel sorry for. they had lost their money but they weren't walking around with their hands out. wes didn't much care for the opinions of those other people and made friends with anyone who could stand his light hearted personality. it was hard not to love him as a kid. he wasn't that kind of obnoxious twit who would throw spitballs. he was just that kid who would make you laugh and as such many people tended to flock to him despite his family's "sad condition." bull. the only people in sad condition were the people of that damn town. they couldn't see past the nose on their faces. wes, nate, and penny had all graduated by the time carly was heading into middle school. as an after graduation trip, wes went up to alaska with a few friends who had enrolled at the university of alaska, people who wanted to check out the scenery and see just how many layers they were going to have to bring. wes had fun. they took a trip out to the artic national wildlife refuge in fairbanks to check out the wildlife, they went juneau to see the glaciers, and finally went to anchorage to tour the university of alaska's campus. it was at a bar there that wesley met captain john morrow of the talia gate, a crabbing vessle currently docked in dutch harbor. after talking with the man, wes asked him if he was willing to try out a new greenhorn, hearing the lingo from the man himself over a few beers. captain morrow agreed, figureing the spindly, pale little kid wouldn't last a day and would bail before the boat could even leave the dock. he took wes shopping for better clothes and rain gear and after calling home to tell his mother he was testing the waters (ha!) here in alaska, set off in search of crab.
now wes hadn't expected to be good at it. most greenhorns aren't and can't take the pressure of running to teh fish grinder, stuffing bait blocks, climbing inside of pots as they hovered over the deadly frigid water to bait them, and all the while avoiding falling in the crab tanks or god forbid falling overboard. the boy was quick. life had taught him that getting things out of the way was better than procrastinating so he would run immediately from a pot to bait more blocks. he had trouble with his first thirty-three hour grind but by the end of the trip wes had gotten used to the life and had earned the approval of the rest of the crew. by the time the boat docked for it's first offload, wes was offerend a full time job as a deckhand, still a greenhorn in the eyes of everyone else, but he was part of the crew. wes accepted and it's been his life every since. one wouldn't expect the skinny boy to be able to handle himself out there, but wes surprised everyone as well as himself. now he comes home from a trip with almost twenty five thousand dollar paychecks. it's not as glamorous as it sounds. there are long waits between seasons so the money hs to be stretched. though it sounds really good and does help, the family still requires his help to stay afloat. but one of wes' little secrets is that he's been slowly siphoning off a few thousand from each paycheck to go into a back in juneau. he's been starting to save up for when he's ready to break away from the family and really start his own life. it's a sad reality, but in the end it's still reality. he and his family will just have to live with that when the time comes for them all to move on.
