"Year - 2305
Day - Unknown.
It's only been a year since I came to this place - this Menagerie - but it's been perhaps the worst. My life has never been easy - but now I find myself thinking that I'd give anything to go back.
I came here because I am what they call a 'shape-shifter', some descendant of an ancestral evolutionary process. Civilized society called us monsters - the government had us hunted and exterminated. But the scientists - The Keepers we call them now - they called us breakthroughs. They called us noteworthy, amazing, magnificent! They called us fascinating.
To save us from persecution, or so we thought, the scientists built a domed city they could control, climate, you know all that - some contraption that would keep us safe from them, from the humans.
That's what they promised us. Advertised it, even.
Instead our sanctuary forsook us - those of us who had come by choice were sadly mistaken - we became experiments. These scientists sought only to research us and the special gene within. We were nothing but numbers and strands of DNA. Our desperate pleas and pained cries meant nothing - just the screeches of confused beasts.
We're trapped in this dome city, suffering each day under the extremes the Keepers force upon us. Each day is a battle for survival - starvation is no stranger to us. Those who had been here long before me formed Rings - the Carna, the Fallen and the Fulsi - like big gangs, or, in reality, one of the only ways to survive - to hunt in groups.
Some of them have become animals, much to the Keeper's rejoice. They never cease with their experiments - some of us become mutated creatures, half human, half animal, called Anthro's. Others are animals who shift into humans - they're the Retromorphs, supposedly the 'missing link' between humans and Shifters. They have herds and packs and whatnot.
Then...the Viruses. Pseudo-Shifters whose bodies are built of Virus DNA - they look like us, maybe with a few mutations, but they aren't Shifters. They aren't humans. With one wound, they can infect you. And they kill mercilessly, on orders from the Keepers.
The Keepers. The damned Keepers!
They're always watching.
