DECEMBER, 2007. EARLY AFTERNOON. VA COURTYARD.
-----------------------------------------------------------
- - - FIVE MINUTES AFTER she woke up, she knew what the day was going to be like. good, bad, boring - it didn't matter. she just knew. want to know why? despite the circling rumour she had magic powers ( okay, she started that herself, but still ), hayden samantha hadley did not, in fact, have magical powers. unfortunate, i know. she did, however, base her entire day off of her mood. she was independent like that. you know how, sometimes, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? just think about it - how often do those days send you dancing underneath a rainbow? you spend the day not believing in the leprechaun who doesn't live at the end of it. see, if the average human being picked up on those little details, the way things always worked, then they could have magical powers, too. but, seeing as the average human being is about as useful as a rusty shovel, her faith didn't hold out for long. in herself, however, she had complete faith. when she woke up in a sour mood, her day was going to be sour. if she woke up not hating everybody, it was going to be a pretty damn good day. more often than not, it wasn't. but she still scored herself points for considering it. so, you could imagine her mentality when she woke up not knowing.
use your imagination.
she turned her ipod on too loudly. she opened the blinds, breathing in as the cool breeze fluttered into her shared hotel room. she flicked on the overhead lights. normal for when you're getting ready in the morning, isn't it? disgustingly normal. it's different, however, if there are too half-naked silhouettes sleeping off hangovers in the bed less than five feet from your own. call it a friendly tolerance between roommates. seriously. most mornings, hayden regarded her brother's existence, letting know whichever girl he had that night of her presence. it was an entertaining way to begin the morning. on this particualrly breezy wednesday, however, she was just inconsiderate.
she was standing in the bathroom, staring at her reflection. hollywood undead was blaring somewhere in the background. and that light wind was giving her goosebumps. she wasn't glaring into her camera lens, pissing off the rest of the world. she wasn't updating her blog, like she promised. she wasn't even listening to the growing rumbles belonging to one dallas james hadley ( he must have finally woken from his drunken slumber ). she was standing there, finishing applying her mascara. the bus she should have caught was probably pulling away from the stop right now. did she care? more like, when did she stop caring? can't remember. "hayden!" it was an angry tone, laced with the wince she knew her brother was feeling. it took a lot of energy to scream at someone when you're probably still a little drunk. calmly twisting the wand back into the black tube, the blogger tilted her head to the side, continuing to look at her appearance. she shifted her eyes ever so slightly as she watched her brother enter the bathroom behind her. a night of drinking, sex and sleeping had caused his hair to elevate all things gravity. and she assumed his shirt was balled up somewhere on her side of the room. picking a blue stud from the counter and quietly fastening it in her left ear, she continued to watch him. "do i even need to say anything this time?" his voice was considerably softer. girl of the night couldn't hear him, she assumed. again, all hayden did was arch an eyebrow at him from the mirror, securing her second earring. he looked over his shoulder, sighed, and closed the door more. fuck him. she liked that song.
now, dj was simply leaning against the door frame, arms crossed. was he honestly pouting? scoffing lightly, hayden met his gaze with her reflection. "i'm getting ready for school, dj." her husky voice was tired, less threatening. that's how she had woken up - neutral, feeling somewhat defeated. know those days? you're borderline in a bad mood, but you just don't care. she didn't feel like fighting him. not this morning. as she turned to reach for her boot, she could feel him looking at her. for real. it was rare when hayden didn't start the morning with a snarky comment, something about the blonde lying in his bed. she was dumb as a post, she would have at least pointed that out. yet, all she did was sit on the edge of the bathtub and pull her grey boots over her tights. standing up, hayden picked her leather jacket up from the floor, secured it over her willowy frame and looked up at him again. why the fuck was he still standing there? staring at her with, dare i say, concern in his eyes? she rolled her eyes. "what?" he raised his eyebrows. fuck, he was picking up his tendancies from hayden herself. and she always got what she wanted out of him by doing as such. ugh. "we've been getting along lately. i don't want to break a window over your disgusting lifestyle." another eyebrow raise. met with another eye rolled. she pushed passed him and into the main room. picking up her black messenger bag, 'nightmare before christmas' travel mug ( filled with hot coffee, loaded with sugar ), and her red sunglasses, she looked at her brother and to the blonde whore on his bed. "hey, kelly!" speaking loudly, right over the music as she picked up her ipod, she watched as the blonde senior finally sat up. "my brother is actually in a relationship right now. congratulations on being the other girl. and he's got the clap." her voice was stone cold now, that familiar nastiness ebbing its way into her words. she put her headphones into her ears, slipped her sunglasses on, and paused by the front door. "happy now?" she spoke to dj, gazing at him darkly. she should probably go catch the late-late bus now.
the late-late bus was, well, late. it never showed up. so she stopped by mellow drinks and people to refill her coffee mug, and walked the leisurely stroll down to the infamously prestigious valkyrie academy. she still didn't know why she went here. the local public school works just as well. and, needless to say, she didn't render attendance too important. ever since she started her junior year, and everything went up in flames, hayden had been exploring the little coastal town. her friendship with alex and amber, well that was fucked. gone. her best friends decided she wasn't worth it? fine. she'd been hanging out with the shak kids ever since. bon fires on the beach, cheap beer, poker - it was so easy. they didn't judge. at least, not as much. but she knew her new crowd was a bad one, with an even worse reputation. her grades weren't what they were last year, and her habit of cutting class was becoming a regular thing. looking down at her phone, it was ten fifteen. class had started almost two hours ago, and she should be sitting in us history right about now. oh well. pushing open the front door to the traditionally beautiful front building, hayden pushed her sunglasses into her recently chopped hair, and wandered down the empty hallways to the library. she'd pretend to be in study hall until lunch hour.
and she studied. sort of. the back tables of the massive library were always the best for the talk of valkyrie academy. while the majority of the students took in the gleaming floors, countless books, and everything traditional about the library, others whispered nasty insults and sex tips. sit at the end of the table in question, and you can learn everything you need to. she finally updated the grey rainbow, listing off everything she listened to during those hours. her blue eyes looked up from the screen of her cherry red laptop when the hollow bell rang. lunch hour was upon the student body. quietly raising, she waited for the sex-starved students to race to the locker room for a midday romp. the nerds who couldn't get laid never left. good enough to pretend she was in that class. carefully sliding her laptop back into her messenger bag, hayden smirked at the teacher once before escaping the dusty library.
this was never a particularly exciting time of day. whether she had been becoming a notorious addition to the shak crowd or not, she had yet to socialize with the few stragglers who attended valkyrie academy. most either skipped, or were enrolled elsewhere. the rich and bitchy were her classmates. and her name was one of the ones whispered with insult in the hallways. but you already knew that. hayden hadley was a known name; just not in a good way. she heard several vicious words as she passed through the school and toward her corner in the courtyard. expected. she'd just posted a nonchalant update on her peers. and the people she recognized as loyal followers were busy crowding around their iphones for the update. finally unzipping her jacket, putting her loosened tie on display, she slipped around any faculty members before they could comment on her untucked white shirt, wrinkled navy blue skirt, or that loosened tie. her corner was calling her. and, within ten minutes, she was giving it company. settling onto the table she claimed as her own, laptop set up once more, she breathed boredly. having no company was an everyday occurance this year, and she was quickly growing used to being something of a loner. it wasn't really that bad. she was free to say whatever she wanted, after all. toying with her plastic fork, she watched the pretty and the blonde crowding around the center of the courtyard. "kelly! did you remember to get tested? my brother never tells his girls these things..." she spoke at a high volume, over the general buzz of the social hour, and for much of her peers to hear. the blonde ditz from this morning, kelly something. "but it's the clap! chlamydia. treat it before it's too late." snickers all around, soon followed by the scathing looks of the other cheerleading people.
see? not so bad. sometimes, deep down, she did miss sharing her insulting tirades with...anyone.
