----IT FELT LIKE HE WAS STARING INTO THE not-so-distant future. standing in the sitting room of what was one of the suites of the hotel he checked into. he wasn't alone. he was accompanied by none other than maggie corinthos. you'd think he'd stay far away from hotels at the point when they were together, but this was necessary. they were on their first job together. it was an undercover job, so it was required they have a base. when luca worked undercover jobs outside of los angeles and valkyrie, he always checked into a hotel. his last steady job was in chicago where he stayed the nights in a shitty. you had to fit 'who' you were and where 'they' would go. the joe schmo college boy in chicago wouldn't have been staying in five star hotel. right now for this job, luca would. it was clear step-up from what maggie and luca had stayed in last week. the hotel they were in now was bright, warm, had a living room, bed room, and a spacious bath. an easy place to avoid the person you were sharing it with. but, that wasn't what they were here for. they were here to work. and work was what he planning to do. he wasn't going to go of the plan this time.
luca had bee tying the tie around his neck when he stopped. his eyes dropped onto one of his fingers. maggie was still in the bathroom getting ready, so the door was closed. on luca's finger, the shiny gold band resided on his left ring finger. he could feel the weight of the ring as it burned around the finger. luca sighed. this was something he would have to start getting use to. but right now, it was a job. they were going undercover as, wait for it, a married couple. fausto thought the way to look less conspicuous would be looking like a rich, high rolling, husband and wife. though luca knew that was the best choice for the job, he still didn't like it. just because, things between him and maggie have been... weird to say the least. it was already out in the open that they both had feelings for each other, breaking the number one rule in 'partnering 101.' it had been a week since the episode in the motel room and luca shamefully couldn't really stop thinking about it. he was stressing over it. it wasn't the same. exactly like maggie told him when he asked. how could he continue to hate her when all he wanted to do was be with her?
he hated this feeling. he hated that he wasn't on his usually game, his flow. he wasn't use to feelings like this clouding his head. he was luca giovanni. he was always on top of it. it made him kind of angry that the curveball his uncle sent him was affecting him so much. luca pulled the knot of the tie closer to his neck as he finished tying it. he smoothed it down as he looked at himself in the mirror. luca then adjusted the straps of the gun holster he had around his chest. it was suppose to be a simple job, sure, but luca never came unprepared. fausto told them blend into the backdrop. they weren't suppose to look out of place. they were there to observe how it was run, what kind of crowd it brought in, and what they did to people who didn't follow the rules. fausto also wanted to know which gang was running it. he had heard it was the russians, but the giovanni head wanted to know what russians and the people involved. crossing into enemy territory required some protection.
luca walked over to the bed where he had his jacket and two hand guns laid in order on the cream sheets. he picked up the first gun, checked it, put the safety on, and tucked it into the holster near his ribcage. repeating the same process with the second one, he slid it into the opposite holster. luca grabbed the black jacket and fished in the pockets for the glasses. they were large and looked like he stepped out of the nineteen fifties, but it was another add-on to going undercover. he wasn't luca anymore. he was james winston, ceo of a technology company. he has been married for five years now, and no, they did not have children. james here enjoyed spending his money, making investments, and flying to rome occasionally on his private jet. though it sounded like a personals, it was what he would be telling people the rest of the night when asked about himself. he was no longer a photographer, no longer shacking in a loft above an empty art gallery. slipping his jacket on, he smoothed it down once again and tugged on it a little.
fausto gave him money. to look the part, they needed to gamble. luca knew every casino game that there was, so he wasn't worried about that. he was still hoping that maggie would stick to the plan. not that there was a definite plan, he just didn't want her attracting attention to herself being the fireball that she tended to be. they were going into another gang's space and just like the giovannis, women were just... there. they didn't investigate. they just laughed at stupid conversational jokes and stood by their husbands. sexist as that might sound, it was true. maggie didn't come from a world run like that. it was just something she was going to get use to.
luca didn't know why but he had this sneaking suspicion that something fucked up was going to happen tonight. why was it that he always felt like that when he was with maggie? whenever he had worked alone, it never felt like that, but was it because he now had a partner? no, he didn't believe that was it. had to be because this was a girl. a girl he had openly admitted to having feelings for. he just didn't want this feeling fucking up a job. he still had to think with his head. the most logical scenario, not the one that keeps them safe. luca sighed. there was really no reason why he should be so worried. if everything worked out right, it was just a sit, drink, gamble, and get to know people sort of thing. that was easy enough. it was a good first job. not immediately dangerous, but not easy like collecting money, either. luca walked over to the bathroom door and knocked twice. "you ready?" he asked.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, HOTEL, DECEMBER 2007 -----one would think that maggie had a flair for the dramatic. after all of this crap you'd think that she would be trying to ham this up for all it was worth. well, you might be right. maggie had never before known herself to be so dramatic. to get thrown into a partnership with a guy, then an engagement, and to fall for the guy she had sworn to hate? it sounded like something out of a cheap ass chick flick and yet here she was. maggie was no actress but if you asked her some of her performances as of late were oscar worthy. trying to pretend to like him? it had ranked up there about the time of that godforsaken benefit. it had taken every fiber of her being to put that seemingly real smile on her face and act like the perfect little fiancee. and you know what? she kicked acting's ass. she had done such a damn fine job that even maggie could have believed it and she knew it was fake from the very first moment she stepped into that car with luca and paolo. so what in god's name had changed from that moment to this one? maggie couldn't even tell you. in the past few weeks she had felt a whirlwind of emotion so strong it blindsided her. it had quite literally blindsided her. because maggie hadn't known that she's reciprocated luca's feelings until the moment he'd said he'd felt them. she hadn't even known he'd felt them for christs sake. it was because she knew he had feelings that she could actually figure out her own. that's why they were constantly at one another's throats. that's why they thought they hated one another. it wasn't because they actually did. it was because they were trying to hide something they hadn't even known existed. there was always attraction, yes of course, but feelings were a whole other matter. feelings, maggie thought, had been beyond her, something she could never possibly feel. and yet...here she was.
-----but this was her chance. the benefit, well that was an opportunity to put her face out there along with the giovannis. the people who mattered would recognize her name and would now associate her with a decent organization unlike the half-cocked thing her father was trying to pull off inconspicuously without her help. yes well that was going...well. maggie was in deeper with this organization that she had ever been with her own and it wasn't getting to her in the least bit. she was finally doing something she wanted to do without the kind of limitations her father had always set for her. actually that was part of the surprise with the giovanni organization. maggie would have figured that a stipulation for her engagement to luca would be something along the lines of "keep her away from the business" or something like that. juan would never agree to maggie being so far into another organization as to do undercover for them and yet here she was. it was probably due to the fact that she was linked to luca but she really didn't care. this was an opportunity for her to shine and really show the chops she had for this business. in fact she knew now more than ever that regardless of whether they ended up married or not, maggie needed to make herself invaluable to the giovannis. she needed to do the same thing she had with her father only this time she was handed the opportunity to do so with a more reputable criminal business, if there ever was such a thing. she needed to make a stand so perfect that fausto wouldn't want to let her go. and if it came to the point where some giovanni was going to have to kill her, she wanted there to be some serious thoughts as to whether or not they went through with it. that had to be her ticket out of a six foot hole in the ground. making herself vital to the giovanni business was the perfect way to delay that very untimely demise she feared so tremendously.
-----the best way to do that would be for this little undercover mission to go as planned. she had to assume this new identity to the best of her ability. seeing as how she could fake being in love with luca for a benefit, being someone else for a night didn't sound so hard. so who was she? tonight she was anna winston, head of advertising at her husbands technology firm. she worked with him, never under him. ha, take that luca. she enjoyed the leisurely kind of lifestyle she and her husband have so far because she's not quite ready for children and things like that. she was raised in london all those many years ago and as such have the remnants of a slight british accent, something maggie knew she could pull off. she'd had to fake plenty before in order to get into client's apartments. like that night at paul's ramshackle hunk of junk. then she'd had to fake her profession. she usually didn't have to go so far but he was a special case you could say. he needed a little heavier a hand. which was funny considering how one of his hands was now lighter. ha! maggie, err anna, looked up at her reflection, her hair pulled half up and half down, accentuated with big, loose curls. her makeup was slightly understated but with bold accents like eyeliner and mascara. she looked damn good in her reflection, even if it wasn't really her style. she rinsed off her hands, wiping them thoroughly on the towel before she grabbed the dress from the hanger and stepped into it. the dress was the most maggie-like piece she was wearing. the pearls, all of the accessories. it wasn't too much like herself. her thumb brushed over both of her rings. she wore three tonight. the engagement ring luca had given to her at the benefit was now buddies with a wedding band, probably the same one she'd be seeing if this wedding actually went through. to offset the weirdness she felt in wearing such...things, maggie wore another ring on her opposite hand. kind of to offset the weight. she wasn't sure why she did it, it just made her feel better.
-----maggie smoothed her hands over the dress as she heard a knock at the door. was she ready? maggie was born ready. "yes but i'm going to need a bit of a hand." maggie said through the door. she looked at her display of knives that she'd yet to somehow strap to her body. that wouldn't take more than a second. in a flash she had about five blades on her. she prayed that there wouldn't be a metal detector at the entrance to this thing, otherwise they'd both be screwed. it was funny though. one would never know of maggie's fondness for blades until she was materializing them out of mid air and throwing them in your general direction. think of it like in miss congeniality. if you saw her taking off all her weaponry you'd be asking where her armored car was as well. she had to hold a hand up to the loose top as she opened up the door. "mind fastening this james." maggie said with a hint of an accent, a smirk on her face as she turned off the bathroom light and walked out into the hotel room. she was going strapless tonight and as luca could see from her visible bare back, it was all her in this dress and nothing more.
-----maggie hadn't even really stopped to think about how dangerous this was or what being partnered and having feelings for that partner was going to do to her tonight. she was focused on what this meant for her, and what she had to do to acheive that goal. she needed to become invaluable to the giovannis, and nothing was going to stop her from that now. it may just be the key to her life as we know it.

----HE USE TO BE ABLE TO PICTURE HIMSELF in five, ten years and see where he wanted to be at. farther up in the totem pole of givoannis. he was always able to see himself working. trying hard to prove his loyalty. he'd still be going around the country working his jobs with ease. he'd probably still be running the underground activities of valkyrie but he would guess, he wouldn't be living in the city as much as he was now. unfortunately, the more he got deeper into his family's roots, the farther and farther he disconnected from his photography life. luca always knew eventually that he'd have to give it up. he couldn't become more of a dangerous criminal while shooting for the likes of elle and designer companies. it would be nearly impossible to juggle. not to mention he wouldn't be wanted anymore, despite his talent. the more credible he became in the giovannis, the more things he would have to give up. it sounded like a sad and sacrificial life. it was painted negatively and luca didn't exactly view it that way. though he loved photography, his real passion lied in the organized crime business. his mother would be so proud.
now, his dreams of become somewhat of a bonafide mobster was hazy. the wrench was thrown in that that wrench was maggie through and through. now his envisions of the high life were plagued with wedding bands and commitment. that scared him more than going to jail. he wanted nothing to do with this. especially since he had those feelings. he choked at the mere thought of what the future between the two entailed. more workings together? traveling together? going to christmas parties together? did he dare admit aloud the thought of having kids? luca closed his eyes tightly, trying to flush everything out of his head. he had to stop thinking about luca and more about this james character he would be for the night. their undercover scheme as a couple was going to be a lot different than they were at the los angeles benefit with fausto. that was forced. acting. it was good acting, but it had been fake and confusing. now... it was like it was real and natural. luca wanted his arm around her waist. he wanted people to believe that they were together. luca really did want her to be his. funny how that was, wasn't it? wanting her and hating her at the same time. it was the greatest battle going on in his head right now.
"yes but i'm going to need a bit of a hand." luca backed away from the door. when someone in the bathroom said that, he was to wonder what it was about. fastening a necklace seemed like the most logical (and safest) way to go. but, he had this nagging feeling she didn't need help with a necklace. luca turned so his back was towards the bathroom door. he shoved his hands deep into his pockets. could he even make it out of the room without thoughts of maggie invading his mind? why was it that she made him so damn nervous? it wasn't healthy or safe, he was convinced. "mind fastening this james." the slight british accent floated towards him and seemed to linger in the air. he chuckled slightly as she was in character. he turned around and saw her dressed in a combination of black and a pink rose color. pearls hung around her neck and he knew she wasn't talking about fastening a necklace. "yeah, sure," he said and walked behind her. it was evident that she wasn't wearing a bra as from the small of her back on up was all bare. it still felt like just night they were in the crappy motel. how his own hands were traveling over this same back. his own back was aching for her touch. the indentations from her nails on his back had been visible the next morning when luca was getting ready in the bathroom.
his fingers brushed across her shoulder blades as he pushed her hair over her shoulder so he could zip her all the way up. for some reason, he went slightly slower than a normal person would have when simply zipping someone up. all the while luca couldn't help but think fuck the job, and just throw maggie on the bed and do what they both wanted. those intentions had become quite clear the night of the snowstorm. sleeping together had been so close to actually happen, thinking back, luca wondered where the hell that kind of willpower came to stop. she seemed to be disappointed, he was upset. this time, he'd just do it. he could almost feel the lace of her dress scrunched in his fists as he ripped the material off of her. his heart rate quickened at just the thought, but the zipper met it's final destination and it was over. the couple fingers that pulled the zipper up didn't stop though. they traced up the remaining of her back and curved toward the base of her neck, just below where her necklace laid. his fingers fell down the slope that turned into her shoulder. he started going down the length of her arm before he abruptly stopped. "ok. i think you're good." no more slip-ups, he told himself. no matter how much he just wanted to stand there and touch her, he had to do this. the job, that was. "you look..." he started, but realized there really was no good word choice to use. mainly because all the words he wanted to use would sound weird coming from his mouth. considering this was the same mouth that called her a prostitute numerous of times. "nice," he decided to say despite the fact that it sounded underwhelming.
they arrived in san fransisco as luca giovanni and maggie corinthos, and now they were leaving the hotel as james and anna winston. the teenage valet boy brought the porsche up to the front and both maggie and luca got in. once safely in the car, he started speeding towards the section of town fausto had instructed them to go. "i know you like to go in busting balls and raising hell, but for tonight could you please just blend into the background?" he asked her, taking his eyes off the road for a second to look at her. "we're there to observe." luca turned into a parking ramp. the same one that, again, they were instructed to do so. there were a litter of nice-looking cars and luca knew that they were indeed in the right place. for nine thirty at night, the jaguars, mercedes, and lamborghinis, tipped off that this was where they needed to be. he took maggie's hand immediately after opening the door for her. he subtly looked around the seemingly empty parking ramp. he didn't look around so obviously either, in case there was cameras or someone watching. it was game-time from here on out. he was no longer luca. they walked out onto the dark and almost abandoned street. he kept the conversation light. about the office. in case anyone was listening in. after walking half a block, luca and maggie turned right into an alleyway. to anyone else, it was just an alley, to the important people, it was the entrance to the underground casino. a crappy looking black door was located in the middle of the abandoned building. luca knocked four times. after a moment a small window opened in the center of the door. eyes peered out at the two. "name." luca cleared his throat. "james winston," he said evenly and confidently. the window closed and a few more seconds passed before the door swung open. a man shorter than luca ushered them in. "just follow the hallway, mr. winston." hm, just like that, huh? he caught the doorman looking at maggie. luca should be use to this by now, but it always struck a chord with him. why did men blatantly check out a women when she was clearly with someone? luca removed his hand from hers and placed it on the small of her back and pushed her through. at the end of the hall, they could hear the laughter of what sounded like a party beyond the closed door.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, HOTEL, DECEMBER 2007 -----maggie wished she could see what the future held. she wished she could see whether or not this marriage was going to go through, whether or not she'd be happy either way, or whether or not she's be looking at herself in a six foot hole. one would think that maggie would feel stuck in her options. it was marry luca or die. but as strange as it sounded even to her ears, maggie wasn't so opposed. after all were the two not getting closer and closer every day? were they not getting along relatively well by their standards by now? honestly if there was a choice between death and a life with luca, well the life with luca didn't sound nearly so bad. that wasn't to say that she would chose marriage if it wasn't a life or death situation. if the choice was that she could either marry luca or walk away uncommitted, well she was pretty sure she'd walk away. unfortunately pretty sure didn't come to her that easy anymore. would she ever actually chose to marry him if given the option? in a situation where her life wasn't in danger? to be honest she didn't know anymore. the lines were blurred so incomprehensibly that maggie almost couldn't tell her ups from downs or lefts from rights. she knew one thing with certainty. everything she knew or felt about luca was changing on a daily basis. what had been complete and utter hatred before was blossoming into this whole new creature almost before her eyes. was it not just a few weeks ago that she'd debated slicing his jugular? hell she'd done that a mere few days ago! and yet here she was in yet another hotel room, just throwing flashbacks at herself with the similar surroundings. it was like she couldn't be helped to remember the night they had confessed their feelings to one another.
-----maggie had to wonder though if things would have been much different had they not said something? after all this was not their first make out session, though it had been the first sober one, so who was to say that something like that night in the skeezy, shlumpy motel room wouldn't happen again? or happen at all. despite all of the what ifs in life, maggie knew one thing was for certain. she had confessed her feelings to him, she had gone to the very brink with him, and she had been rejected. boy did that smart. in the case of usual (and i mean normal0 people, when you confessed your emotions and both you and your partner felt the same, it was kind of a time to come together and just show how much you were indeed feeling. there were only a few problems with that when it included luca and maggie. one, they weren't partners by choice, two, they were too used to wanting to kill each other for what they were feeling to be right and three, luca for some reason was rejecting her left and right. now before, well maggie wouldn't have blamed him. the first was an adrenaline induced moment of weakness followed by a half naked run in with the ex. not suitable for anything, ever. the second time maggie was drunk off her ass. honestly how in the hell had they gotten mixed up in these situations? oh yeah, it was all maggie's fault. the blame for stripping for the ex girlfriend and having to save the drunk girl from herself laid solely on maggie's shoulders though she would never admit it. but still the fact of the matter was that there had yet to be a good time for them to ever have something, anything. not like maggie was hoping for a situation like that. god she had to be the stupidest most gullible woman on the planet. luca might have feelings for her, but they were the last possible thing he wanted. and here she was hoping for something...well, else. she didn't even know why she bothered.
-----she looked up from her shoes as the bathroom door opened to see luca's back. if that wasn't a sign...oye. she had to admit one thing though, she could do a decent fading british accent. considering how far it was from the normal accent that would slip every once in a while, maggie figured it wasn't a pretty bad knock off. she'd heard a few british accents in her day both live in front of her and from the inevitable movie. it didn't take a genius to be able to figure it out, just a genius to keep it up all night. but she was in character and nothing, i repeat, nothing was going to break her stride now. she still had something to prove and that wasn't going to change until this entire marriage fiasco was over. her cheeks pinked slightly but faded before luca could catch a glimpse of it. his fingers danced over her skin, pushing away her hair, and maggie had to force herself to breathe. what was that before about nothing was going to break her stride. she was a damned dirty liar. she could feel her taking his sweet time as he slid the zipper into place, but of course he couldn't stop there. maggie sucked in an audible breath as luca's fingers traced up to her neck then across her shoulder and down her arms. she shiver involuntarily, almost thankful that he'd pulled away so that she could get a chance to breathe. god it hadn't been like this only a few weeks ago! what was it about confessions that flipped her entire world around on her? huh?! good? oh right. "yes, um, thank you." maggie said quickly, clearing her throat as she turned away from him. she glanced over her shoulder at him, stupidly wondering what it was he could possibly think of her. when the word nice slipped out of his mouth...well maggie could do nothing more than bite the inside of her cheek and pretend like nothing had happened. she gave him a small smile as a thank you and let that be that.
-----she nestled easily into the car, closing her door and watching as luca sped away. she couldn't help but to laugh as he spoke. "i don't know whom you're talking about. anna winston never busts balls." she said in her slightly british accent. "i promise, unless something goes wrong i'll be completely unrecognizable." she nodded at him anyways as he looked over because that was likely the only way to appease him. the place was apparent with all of the pricey wheels. it was time to put on the game face, something that was relatively easy to apply. unlike last time, maggie did still enjoy luca's company. she could play a wife easily as long as this little role of hers wasn't a lifelong gig. she took his hand as he helped her out of the car, stepping out of that cute little four wheeled number as anna winston. there was no mistaking it. the way she carried herself, the present little smile on her lips, and the way she remained close to her "husband's" side were completely unlike maggie herself. it wasn't that long of a walk to the casino entrance thankfully and maggie had to fight the urge to laugh at the ridiculous entry methods. she was surprised there wasn't some secret codeword to let you into the boys only clubhouse. honestly. there were better ways to weed out the wierdos than that. still she stayed in character, following her pseudo husband into the casino. she caught sight of the doorman but didn't acknowledge him. she was a caring and dutiful wife, at least for now. besides, maggie had to admit that she did slightly revel in the fact that only moments later she could feel luca's hand on her back. she smiled over at him for a moment before turning back to the casino as the door opened and they were walked through.
-----as they stepped through the door, maggie gave luca's arm a little squeeze, something she noticed the ir escort had made himself aware of. "oh james this looks like fun." she said in a sweeter voice than luca was probably used to. she turned to their escort with a polite smile. "there wouldn't happen to be a soul here who knows how to make a decent bellini is there?" maggie asked, watching the man's brow furrow. "i'm not sure ma'am. let me find out for you." anna winston smiled sweetly, glancing back at her husband lovingly. "why thank you dear. if you find that someone, mind he make me a raspberry bellini? oh and for my husband?" maggie turned to luca, asking his drink of preference. "i know you're not much of a fan of my british drink. a simple scotch or bourbon?" maggie asked, loud enough for her audience to hear. this little escort of theirs was sticking to them like glue.

----THE REASON WHY HE HAD SUCH A HARD TIME following his feelings was because of he was caught on the line of doing what he wanted, and what was right. What he wanted was to was just spend days on days in bed with her. not wanting to get up and deal with the real world. his loft provided a perfect setting for two people to laze around and shut themselves away from the worlds they were tied too deeply in. did he want to sleep with maggie? well, to be frank, yeah. it had been a growing fireball in his chest since she was over for that infamous training session where he kissed her. he felt bad for thinking that since that was when london came in. it was always an argument between them, and as much as it tended to tire him out, luca so badly just wanted to shove her against the nearest wall and see how it went from there. their last night in the motel during the storm, it was like everything was handed to him. it was once again an argument turned passionate war between two bodies. he wanted to so bad, he did. but he didn't go through with it even when maggie basically gave him the green light.
the constant stopping always brought him back to what was right. and to him, all the signs pointed to never getting involved with your partner. especially with someone you had intense feelings (good or bad) for. in what universe could a firery personality like maggie be paired with a hot-headed one like luca's? that was just a catastrophe waiting to happen. she liked to slap him and get him on his back (and not in the fun way.) he liked to man-handle her by pulling, pushing, or any other way of tugging her along. they were angry, violent, and once wanted to kill each other. the right thing to do would be to walk away and find someone less intense. but maggie and luca had this attraction of dangerous temptation and it was slipping out more and more into their daily interactions. something was going to happen, and luca might not be as lucky as he had in the past of stopping something. the way he saw it, they were being forced to get married. that alone was messed up and old-fashioned in his opinion. it was just going to be dangerous to work together. he should just tell fausto to choose. either they were working together as partners, or they were going to get married. if maggie had to be in his life, it would be straining to have her leaking into both his personal and professional life.
he found it funny that she had a fading british accent. guess he knew how to pick them. considering, luca spent his years growing up in england. his mother was british and his father bore the giovanni name. luca was born in italy but grew up in england, the hometown where is mother was raised. they'd probably still be there if it hadn't been for fausto's pull to get them to move to los angeles. luca probably would be some photographer. the full-time kind. possibly have an art gallery, because that was always something he wanted since he was a teenager. even if his mother never said it, luca knew that it was that kind of life she wanted for her son. sienna, was luca's other half in the form of his twin sister he hadn't seen in a few years now. sienna was a girl, automatically unchained to an army you were encouraged to join. luca had to admit that maggie fit the mold of a high class british woman. the fading accent was impeccable. it was kind of ironic since luca once had one, too. he mimicked his american friends about a year into living there when he realized that he sounded tougher without it. one thing his mom told him she wished he had kept.
maggie stayed by his side as they entered the room. it was decorated warmly. it was almost like a mini version of the monte carlo or any other casino in vegas. black jack, craps, and other casino games were strewn across what was probably once a ballroom in the abandoned building. a long bar was stationed near the door they had entered. you wouldn't look twice at the building outside. guess that was the plan anyway. no one would guess something this extravagant lurked on the inside. "oh james this looks like fun." luca tore his gaze off the interior and back to maggie. "we can try our hands at the craps table later. i'm feeling lucky." his hand left her back as someone started talking to maggie about what she wanted to drink. luca took this opportunity to look around the place again. he was observing alright, but made sure his expression was more awe-inspired versus his hard mechanical investigative look. people dressed in black were handling the game tables. chances were that these were just soldiers in whatever gang was running this. maybe if luca recognized even one of them, he could figure out what family these people were from. they were betting on the russians, but it was a matter of what russians the giovannis were going to steal customers from. which led to what the repercussions could be and how the giovannis would handle themselves.
"i know you're not much of a fan of my british drink. a simple scotch or bourbon?" a few other couples were eyeing the new couple that entered the floor. of course, they were the ones that got the most stares. he was exactly thrilled at this because he wanted them to be just the normal couple that flew under the radar. he should have known that maggie and luca, no matter what role they were playing, could never slip under the radar. "some scotch is fine," he told the escort and he walked off to go fill the bar order. upon leaving, one couple, who probably had ten to fifteen years on maggie and luca stuck around to introduce themselves. they were david and betty johnson who after five minutes, luca could tell they were like that golden couple that others wanted to model their relationship off of. luca and david started talking about the economy and what that meant for businesses like theirs, david was the president of an airline agency. when david asked how luca knew about this place, luca told him that he was invited by a mutual friend, so he and his wife, anna, decided to come in and check it out. after several more minutes, luca was finishing his first scotch and david announced to the wives that they were going to play some black jack. "i'll need my lucky charm," luca said smiling toward maggie. david scoffed. "you'll need a lot more than that to help you. come on, just the guys." luca shrugged at maggie, and was only slightly concerned that she was now going to be my herself. time to not fuck it up.
when luca got to the table, he was given his second scotch. he didn't have any intentions on getting drunk on the job, and surely two glasses of scotch wasn't going to knock him on his ass, but as long as he kept the appearance up, he should be fine. fausto always told him that accept drinks when offered but never drink the whole thing. he was on his second, but, he had it under control. at the table, he was with david, and two other guys. one, had his girlfriend or wife hanging on behind his shoulder. luca's eyes shot up towards maggie as she lingered at the bar with betty, still. luca cashed in and got his chips and started observing lightly about who came and trying to pick out if he'd seen one of the workers somewhere before.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, CASINO, DECEMBER 2007 -----maggie had never had a partner before so it wasn't like she really knew the proper partnering etiquette. she knew that falling for the guy you were working with was a no-no no matter what line of work you were in. there was a reason why corporations had a restriction on inner office dating. it always caused problems when things went wrong, probably more so when things went right. who knew. but when your line of work involved crime and danger on a daily basis, well dating your co worker was probably strictly forbidden. that was why cops usually worked with same sex partners and such. but of course things could never be so easy for maggie. in just about any organization there was no such thing as women in the business. at most, women were used as distractions and nothing more, but they were never full fledged members of any crime syndicate. they were sometimes respected and trustworthy enough to be trusted with a drop off or two if the situations were sticky enough but you never walked into a headquarters and saw a woman at the bosses right hand. you never saw a woman with a semi-automatic, escorting a man anywhere. things just didn't work that way. so it was safe to say that when maggie got a partner, there were no other options than to stick her with someone of the opposite sex. doing so was bad enough. doing so was dangerous enough. but now the pair had been told that they would be getting married and that they needed to get used to one another and quick before it ended up killing them. they now had to look forward to a tense stalk down the aisle and to saying their first and only "i dos" because a divorce would never be in the cards. the only way a person got divorced in the mob was when they held a death certificate in their hands. since maggie had no future plans of dying anytime soon, and in fact was doing just about anything she could to avoid such a situation, it looked as though luca and maggie would be stuck together when and if that day ever came.
-----so far maggie was still trying to work out how she could get out of this engagement, though the more and more the days passed the less effort she was actually putting into the whole thing. did she want to still be breathing by the time all of this was over? you bet your ass. did that mean that she wanted to actually get married? well maggie liked him, yeah, but did she actually want to go so far as to say i do? well no. right now all that they had established was that they liked one another. that wasn't even necessarily the absence of hate. they wanted each other, lusted after one another, but did that really mean they would be skipping off to the alter? as far as maggie could tell the answer to that was no. but the idea that it could be possible was no less frightening then the initial shock after finding out she was forcibly engaged to luca. could it be that by the time spring came around and they were at the point of that little wedding fausto sounded so fondly of that the ushered actually wouldn't have to be dragging maggie by her arms to the alter? the fact that in that time she might actually walk herself down that aisle both terrified and thrilled her. it terrified her for obvious reasons and thrilled her for reasons she hadn't even solidified in her own head. could she actually fall for him by spring? she liked him, yes, she wanted him, duh, but love him? could she actually love him in such a short time. after all, they'd been "engaged" now for about a month or so and half of that time they'd been fighting it and one another. they hadn't started feeling anything since...well maggie couldn't even peg it. for her it was probably that first kiss. her immediate reaction had been to clamp to him like a limpet and she hadn't let go until luca and shoved her away. her first instinctive reaction had been to kiss him back. it was probably since then that she'd felt anything but what about luca? how long had it been for him?
-----dare she even ask? maggie wasn't sure that she wanted to find out because it would be just her luck that luca realized he felt something, oh a few days ago when she'd been feeling this for a few weeks now. yeah somehow that wouldn't be reassuring in the slightest. and she wasn't curious. all she knew now was that luca felt something similar to what she'd been feeling. that was all she needed to know, that was all she cared to know. anything past that was just too much or not enough information and it was likely that in the end she still wouldn't be satisfied with the answer. so it was best left alone. yeah, she could manage that couldn't she?
-----either way there really wasn't time for that now. but maggie wasn't easily distracted. this accent and this whole other persona were easy enough to keep tabs on. maggie made sure that she didn't appear as anything more than the doe-eyed wife of james winston. anna after all was a dignified businesswoman. she was soft spoken but her quiet words could carry more power than a nuclear explosion. she was an understated woman and carried herself with dignity. she wasn't a huge fan of flaunting her wealth or her good looks but knew how to tastefully present herself. it was about as far from maggie as one could get without slapping her in pigtails with wide rimmed glasses and sticking her in a star trek convention or something. still maggie could handle herself anywhere. after all she'd pretended to be in love with luca at the benefit. that in itself had been an oscar worthy performance at the time though it wasn't so much of an act now. maggie glanced around the room with awe, looking as though she was taking in the decor when really she was looking at just about everything else. there were dealers on every table and each dealer looked as though he was out of place. maggie had been to vegas so she'd seen her share of dealers and these people were no dealers. their motions were too clipped, their card skills intermediate at best, and their eyes wandered away from their tables in precise, timed intervals. they worked for whoever was running this show, that much she could tell. she spied cameras all over the place, most likely attached to face recognition software, and the security was lacking around the kitchen which would be their best route of escape need be. all that at once. and luca doubted her skills. he may not admit it but in the back of his mind luca was probably wondering how he was going to cover maggie's ass in the worst possible outcome of the night. he needn't worry.
-----"anna" turned to her husband the moment their escort disappeared to fill their orders, her fingers smoothing over the lapels of his jacket. "whatever is cooking in that kitchen smells divine." anna said to her husband with a sweet smile. maggie didn't want to drop this act for a moment so talking in code was going to be the best she could manage. she stayed close to him as an older couple approached, smiling politely as introductions were made. this was going to be a piece of cake. the boys hurried off to play after a few minutes leaving maggie with little old betty. "so it's a first time for you two?" betty asked with a smirk. "is it really that obvious? we try not to look like amateurs but yes it's a first time. i've seen vegas but i had no idea we had our own little version hidden in san francisco." anna said with a pleasant smile, taking a sip from the drink someone had managed to look up on the internet. "have you two been coming here long? you look like seasoned veterans." betty smiled and started going on about how they'd been attending for a few years, long enough to not have to state their names at the door. "this certainly is an interesting place. i hope james fancies it because i quite enjoy it here."
-----after a while the conversations changed, but the boys still remained playing their game. other women by now had joined the group and were now talking about book clubs, cabana boys, and how much they loved the convenience of having their own jets and such. maggie smiled through it all, keeping up with conversations and gossiping about how wonderful her husband was to the point the other women were rather jealous. she wouldn't be surprised if she caught them chatting him up later on. "if you'd all excuse me for a moment." maggie said with a polite smile as she walked over to the boys' table. "winning big?" she whispered, kissing his neck. the other men didn't seem to mind seeing as how they had a pretty good view of her cleavage. it was a strategical power play done by most, if not all, wealthy elitists like the ones who attended underground casinos. the woman chatted up their husbands and then showed just how loyal they were to them but at the same time making a bold statement as to what was theirs and what would always be theirs. now maggie didn't know about always but as it stood right now and as far as everyone else was concerned, james winston aka luca giovanni, was hers. her gaze locked on his as cards were dolled out again. she brushed her fingers along his ear with a bit of a smirk. "show these lovely gents how a game of cards is played." she said as her gaze remained locked on luca's giving him a kiss on the lips before she straightened, gave the other gents a little wink, and walked back to the hens who were watching her with eager eyes. as she walked away she could hear a few of the men's voices saying "where ever did you find her?" and "does she have a sister?"

----LUCA WASN'T PLAYING TO WIN. he wasn't a gambler either. he was a the guy you answered to when you gambled. he was playing blackjack simply because the men he was making friends with were too. he was winning he was losing, but it hadn't really made a dent in the money he started out with. up or down a couple thousand, maybe. all pocket change for james winston, there for pocket change for luca. he wanted to observe quietly without getting too involved into the game. he was talking sports with david and the other guys he soon learned were jared and leo. leo was the man that had his girlfriend hanging on them. he was some cowboy from texas, and the woman donning the tight red number was a model he met on a visit to california. she wasn't too famous because luca had never heard of her before. usually, luca was up-to-date on the veteran models as well as the up-and-comings. leo's girl had to be one of those models that modeled once for a small business' advertising scheme. she thought that would be enough to call herself a model. jared probably was closes to luca's age. he had that young lothario vibe coming from him. luca would guess he was wasting away his trust fund, which meant it was probably jared's father that was invited to these gatherings. sometime's, the young heir to maybe an oil company would waste some money and hit on girls that were here alone. probably hired by whoever put these on. always trying to milk customers for whatever they were worth. prostitutes. luca took note and would mention it to fausto in the morning. he wouldn't say anything to maggie since he probably wouldn't be able to say it with a straight face and would get a slap. he was still getting use the physical harm she'd inflict on him. slapping, breaking noses, scratching, pushing, and then the occasional knife-to-throat threatening.
he shook his head slightly and looked up and spied her talking to the other women. clearly, luca had the best-looking and sexiest wife over there. all the women were relatively young. it wasn't like they were graying and saggy. they were the wives you would except men like luca was hanging out with, would have. they were just housewives who tended to the children, cleaned, cooked, and did everything. it was like they walked out of the nineteen fifties and resumed the work exactly how it was done back then. he looked back down, losing his hand. the dealer took his chips, and before the next hand was dealt, luca looked around at the tables in front of him. there were a decent amount of people here. for an underground casino, the member's list was pretty big. looked like they had standards too. there wasn't one person out of place. they were all dressed to impress, wearing their best clothes and holding themselves with the air of confidence. there was no need to prove you were better than anyone, because everyone here was your equal; you were all better than the people not invited.
"winning big?" luca smirked when he felt lips on his neck. acting and not acting was riding on a thin line, luca wasn't so sure she was just playing the part anymore. well, she was obviously, seeing as everyone here thought she was some brit named anna, but all the affectionate interactions between the two were different. they could say they were just playing the role, but that was just a cover. even luca knew that. maggie was leaning over, he could see her heaving out of the dress. hm, well, he didn't want anyone else to drool over them, so for the sake of not breaking out into violence, luca looked down at his cards, avoiding the faces of the men at the table. "not know, but since you're here now..." he chuckled and set a few more chips out on the table for the dealer. he had fifteen now, which was always a tricky number to have. it was generally too low of a number to actually win, and too risky to ask for another card. the dealer looked at luca and he nodded. another card turned face up. four of spades. nineteen. good enough. he put a hand up to stop, saying he'd stay where he was. the round was over and the cards were revealed. dealer busted, david busted, leo had eighteen, and jared had twenty. hm, well, you win some you lose some. he looked at maggie as a new round was about to start. they were unreal. his uncle, would be proud. he felt her fingers brush his ear and slightly the hair behind it. "haha, i'm trying, babe," he told her looking at his cards and back at her again. she bent down so their heads were level and she leaned in for a kiss. he didn't want to say that they were the center of attention, because he really didn't want to be, but he could feel the men at his table watching while the women maggie had been talking to were watching from a distance. but, the kiss was over and she straightened and walked away.
"where ever did you find her?" that was david as he smirked over at luca. jared scoffed as he spoke to luca, but his eyes were still trained on maggie walking away. "does she have a sister?" so this was what people honestly thought of her? not that he was disagreeing with them by all means, but he never realized how envious people were of luca because of who he was "married" to. he was sure the lane was both ways, because well, he wasn't ugly, and when he wasn't collecting money or doing jobs, he'd get slipped models, assistants, and girls from bars' numbers here and there. so, he had to have something going for him then, right? "no," he told the men. "she doesn't have a sister. and i found her in a bar." david laughed. "no, really. i was on business in london. she's from there. we met one night at a bar." that was the story they were suppose to be telling people. bringing in more make believe family members might pose a problem, that's why maggie was an only child and luca had an older brother, but he died as a teenager. simple. after another ten minutes of playing, luca grew tired as the conversation turned into politics, again. luca wasn't really part of any political party. he defied the american government so much, why even bother? he didn't vote, didn't rally. he only became a u.s citizen so it wasn't possible for him to get deported if something ever happened. he had his opinions on topics, sure, but he wasn't reading the newspaper everyday to check out what was going on in the polls.
when he looked up to see what maggie was doing, he narrowed his eyes. across the way, maggie was standing by the bar. standing across from her, was a man. he had dark hair, from what luca could see, and kept smiling at her. he felt hot heat rising in his chest as he saw the man casually touching maggie's arm in conversation and gave her a drink from the bartender. what the hell was this. "i'm done," luca announced and gathered his chips and shoved them in his pockets. it wasn't a lot, and he doubted he'd cash them in, but it was just keeping up with the appearance of being happy with his winnings. it didn't take him long to cross the room and fit himself right next to maggie. "i was looking for you. thought we could try our hand at the craps table," he said, possibly interrupting the conversation. luca looked at the new man, who had the most striking green eyes luca had ever seen. they seemed almost familiar to him, though for once, luca couldn't put his finger on it. to be polite though luca gave him a hard stare, stuck out his hand and said, "james winston."

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, CASINO, DECEMBER 2007 -----this honestly was not that difficult of a job which was a good thing considering it was maggie's first and that she really needed this to go well. she needed a kind of big win under her belt if she was to well seduce the giovanni organization into wanting to keep her around. maggie hoped that it wouldn't be all too difficult considering that she held all of the cards, but she needed a chance to get that out in the open first, to make her point known before she had a gun to her head. you know it really wasn't fun living this way. to walk around knowing that the timer hanging over your head was ticking away faster than ever before and that there was very little you could do to stop it. it wasn't a fun feeling. maggie knew that she wasn't immortal. one day she would meet her fate and it would most likely be sooner than what it would be had she lived some normal, hum drum life, but when that timer felt as if it would be going off before you even hit your twenties, well it was enough to make a girl jumpy. the sad thing was that she was everything the giovannis could possibly want. she had the corinthos business packed away in her head and yet she was the most powerless individual attached to that god forsaken drug-peddling scheme. all fausto would need to do was entice her with something she wanted and she would flip on her father in no time. there was no loyalty as far as maggie and her father was concerned. it was hard to be loyal to a man who was looking to kill you at every chance he got. truthfully though maggie had pretty much already flipped, silently of course. no one really knew that she would work for the giovanni's without much coaxing. she'd already found them much more pleasant to work with, and that included being paired with luca. so all in all she'd really given up on trying to impress her father. she'd had a taste of something better and without much trouble had converted.
-----she was really starting to enjoy herself and have fun during this little mission of theirs. though lately they were getting along incredibly well, it was still kind of an out of body thing to be having such a good time when luca was involved. this was after all a newer kind of development. they hadn't been so cohesive ever so was it such a bad thing that it still kind of shook her? she wasn't used to it. after all before they started getting along so well the very definition of their partnership was who was going to kill who first? even now she could think back to the moment when they'd first been partnered up, the first moment where their hate had really intensified. it had been after that little interaction at paul's place where luca had though maggie was a prostitute and maggie ahd beaten luca's nose to hell. good times. thinking about it still made her smile. because despite how well they were getting along now, maggie could never get sick of the pleasure that came along with getting the best of him. that would probably never change. she loved one-upping luca in his games and that night at paul's had been round number one. but that next day, oye. she'd been in a dress that her father thought suitable, because women were only arm candy and nothing more so she was always forced to dress the part around him. then juan and fausto had come up with the brilliant idea to make them partners and more brilliant was leaving them alone in a room together. it really didn't take long for them to go at each other's throats. what i picture that would have been to walk in on. maggie had had a knife to luca's pride and joy and luca had had a gun to her head. honestly it was just a flash of all the misery to come. it should have been a warning right then and there but a part of maggie had been thrilled. she'd gotten a new kind of rush whenever she went toe to toe with luca and that still hadn't changed. that rush used to drive her mad. it would eat her up inside and make her anger toward him all the more red hot, but now it seemed to come as naturally to her as breathing, something that still came as a bit of a shock to maggie.
-----but yes, she really was enjoying herself. she loved chatting with the other girls and just acting like one of the crowd when really she'd already pegged this place for what it was. it was a decent underground business, but lacking in the means of security. after only a few minutes maggie had already pegged the weakest places in the area, planned their escape route if needed, and had already put a mental red flag over everyone who could possibly be working/undercover here. they weren't the only ones playing a game here tonight. there were a few men she'd noticed were scanning the crowds. they were a little more obvious than maggie and luca so it made them easy targets. honestly this all just felt like one big game to her, and one she was winning. maggie wasn't her father's analytical mind for nothing. it didn't help that a little piece of her wasn't acting at all. the kiss on the neck, gently playing her fingers across his skin, she could deny that that wasn't part of the game, that it was all for him. but of course she wouldn't say it out loud, not even if this wasn't undercover. maggie didn't like putting all of her cards on the table until she knew everyone else's hand, and in this case the hand that was of particular interest was luca's. she knew he wanted her, he just never let himself go too far. that was one niggling little detail she didn't like. maggie had put herself out there twice and neither time had he really taken the bait. well she didn't like being so stubborn as to drive people away, but a girl could only take so much rejection. true the first time she'd been drunk, but it was the first time she'd been completely honest with herself. the second time they'd both been sober and still? nothing. not again. maggie was sick of being shoved away. as she walked away, maggie noticed that most of the women stayed where they were. there was jealousy in their eyes and maggie couldn't help but to smile.
-----instead of returning to the flock she veered over to the bar where she sat down and ordered herself a simple water with lemon. she didn't need to surround herself with anymore fake than was necessary anyways. she took a small sip when her drink found her, playing with the little plastic straw that was meant to serve as a stirrer. "a woman such as yourself really shouldn't be left alone." she heard from the bar stool over. she chuckled as she looked up at the green-eyed man who sat beside her, his index finger running the rim of his shot glass. he was one of the "undercovers" that maggie had pegged from the beginning. probably a worker who assimilated himself into the crowd only to step forward if there was ever a real issue in the crowd. like say, someone infiltrating their business? "maybe so but boys deserve their games." she said in her faked accent. their conversation didn't last long before maggie felt the warmth of a body pressed against her. luca. pulling her gaze away from the stranger, maggie looked up at him with that adoring smile she'd mastered, leaning against him a little as her attention returned to the man who was now expertly looking over luca. she watched as the man took luca's hand, giving it a firm shake. "winston eh? i could swear you looked like a giovanni." maggie made no reaction, surprising herself with how well she could play this up. "giovanni? james do you have a twin i don't know about?" she said with a smile. trying to play it off as nothing, maggie turned to luca. she wasn't going to drop her character until they were back at that hotel. "honey why don't you buy this man a drink and talk about your family tree or something. if you'll excuse me i'm heading to the ladies room." she said before turning back to the man in question. "it was a pleasure meeting you...i'm sorry, what was your name again?" she asked, quirking her head to the side in mock curiosity. "nikolas" was the only word he spoke, his name spoken in that traditional russian way that sounded less like nickolas and more like nee-koh-lah.
-----"pleasure, now excuse me." she said as she turned away from the men and started heading through the crowd. as she wound her way through, maggie felt two men on her flank, close enough that she could feel the fabric of their jackets as they approached. oh goody, this was going to be fun. thank goodness the restrooms were right across from the kitchen which would undoubtedly be their escape route.

----WHY DID HE FEEL LIKE MAGGIE and him were bonnie and clyde? that felt as childish as children playing cops and robbers. he could internally smirk though because he had a feeling when they worked together (despite the obvious dangers and concerns) they could be a good duo. i know, luca admitting that maggie could be just as good as him. hey, when they were great, they could execute any mission. it was when they argued and were... luca and maggie, that's when things got hairy. as long as they weren't themselves they seemed to hit a flow. they were a good james and anna, let me tell ya. they were young, they were married, they worked together, they were rich, they had and obvious attraction they didn't mind subtly displaying to the people around them. whoa, whoa. could this possibly be them in the future? anna and james aside, it was all the workings of what they might be post-marriage. yes, luca was pretty confident that they would be getting married. he didn't believe that one eighteen year old could change the mind of fausto giovanni. though fausto was only one half of this authority, if juan sr. wanted to get rid of his daughter, he wouldn't change his mind if suddenly luca and maggie really did like each other.
and they did like each other. it was pretty obvious now and they really hadn't revisited the subject since it happened. he still thought they were too young to get married, but pushing her away was becoming useless now. he liked her, he did. luca just didn't know why they had to get married. couldn't they just... i don't know, date or something? they hadn't even really gone on a date. luca couldn't see himself asking her out on a date. that sounded weird with anything that happened. would he just go up to her and go, "so, dinner friday night?" it'd turn into a fight, he was pretty confident in that fact. she'd throw the butter knife at him during the first course, because they wouldn't even make it to the main course without being at each others' throats. they weren't a healthy relationship. he knew it, she knew it. it was too screwed up to even talk about. they were... was it possible to be so screwed up that it worked? surely that would be what some would call a relationship that can't work. that, things would change for the worse.
his brain was running like a madman. between luca and james, you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between who was which when he flocked to maggie's side in an angry jealous rage. but the man could so obviously see she was married. truth or not, she had a ring on her finger. you always looked at the ring finger to see. guess this guy didn't care. luca knew that this guy wasn't like the davids and jareds he was hanging with back at the card table. the james in him was just wondering who the hell this guy was, but the luca had already identified him as one of the guys that was running this place. it was just where he was from that luca was trying to figure out. he knew a few in the area. "winston eh? i could swear you looked like a giovanni." luca laughed. maggie asked him if there was a twin he didn't know about. "I guess I just have one of those faces," luca said. the jig was up though. it was now just finding a way out that wasn't so obvious. this mission was suppose to entail little complications. luca didn't want to make a scene, they needed to leave like it was nothing. maggie excused herself. she said she needed to go to the bathroom. luca let her go, though he was sure she was being followed. the man said his name was nikolas. then it clicked for him. nikolas orloff of the novikoff crime family. luca turned towards the bar, as did nikolas. luca held up two fingers for the bartender and the bartender nodded. they were going to be civil. at least for now. there was no reason to act like anything else. "so, tell me, luca. what is fausto trying to steal from us now?"
luca had a run in with nikolas about a year ago. the giovannis got a leak from someone that the novikoff family was planning on receiving a weapons shipment. fausto didn't want them to get anymore powerful than they already are. two big bads dealing with illegal firearms wasn't very good so fausto had them intervene and so they did. it ended up being an ambush and the russians were left pissed, hurt, and fewer than with what they started with. the giovannis got the shipment and thus began the giovannis war with the novikoffs. they never liked the russians, but fausto never had much personal vendettas with any of the families. until now. luca had been apart of that job. and now that that night was becoming forefront in his mind, he had a run-in with nikolas with the green eyes. they didn't know each other, but background knowledge provided, they both knew about the other. nikolas was about the same rank in the russian mob as luca was with the gios. still learning, but good enough to run things on his own. "we don't steal anything. we'll always have more credibility than the novikoffs." two drinks were placed in front of the men. luca and nikolas didn't look at each other, but more both stared at the lines of alcoholic shelves that were behind the bar. "i want to know why fausto sent his favorite little lapdog to our place tonight. getting a little nervous at our business, is he?" the russian accent was heavy, giving off that nikolas was directly from russia and not part of a long line of russians living in america. luca shrugged. "you know as well as i do fausto doesn't care what the peasants are doing in his kingdom." he noticed nikolas tighten his grip on the glass. "sooo... arrogant you are, luca. a king can't be a king forever." luca chuckled. "we'll see about that," luca said. "you might want to check on your whore in the bathroom." nikolas casually took another drink and luca straighten his jacket. he raised the glass to his lips and turned to nikolas, "she's not a whore." luca placed the glass back down and started walking away. "have a nice night, luca." he heard nikolas' voice travel over people he was walking through. no one had no idea what happened, but luca knew he had about ten seconds before things could get ugly. first. bathroom.
he weaved in and out of people that stood in the way, making it to the womens' restroom. he pushed the door open and could already hear a struggle. two men and maggie. well, maybe he should have gotten there sooner. fending two people off was, in itself, hard work. fausto told him, don't use guns unless you had to, so luca grabbed the one closest to him. it was easy because both of them were facing maggie anyway, they didn't even notice him. his hands balled into fists around the man's back collar. catching him off guard made it easy for luca to pull and swing him right into the tiled wall. the russians really needed to tighten up their fighting skills because it was never this easy to knock a man unconscious. a gun fell from the man's hand and luca kicked it out of the way, underneath a stall. luca stood up and found the other man's twin laying in the same fashion on the ground. heh, ok. guess everything was taken care of. he outstretched his hand towards maggie. "i think we've overstayed our welcome. know a way out?"

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, CASINO, DECEMBER 2007 -----she had to admit that the notion of luca having a real interest in her was quite the thrill. maggie had tried to ignore what she felt for him and it was obvious that that hadn't quite worked. she really had tried to hate him, wanted to even, but since that kiss during their little training session she'd had more than just thoughts to maim him on her mind. maggie wasn't used to feeling this way for many reasons, one, she was a kid and she wasn't supposed to have experienced something so strong back then. two was the fact that her father hated her and would do anything and everything to make her miserable, scaring off stupid teenagers included. third was the fact that she'd never had a partner or anyone else that she was supposed to interact with for that matter. she wasn't used to being around people. her father had made it so that the only people who even would talk to her, were family members. the law around the concentration camp, opps i mean corinthos home, was that anyone on juan's payroll was not allowed to interact with the family unless told to do so. since the order was rarely ever given, it was no surprise that the only people maggie ever came in contact was the short list of family members and house staff around the place. granted her family was larger than most and granted it was a big house with lots of staff, but maggie still hardly had anyone her age to hang out with. her brother raoul and her sister bella were both the closest in age to her, both two years apart on either side, but raoul was more interested in holding grudges than hanging out with his family and bella just didn't know about the family business. it was easy for maggie to forget about the business around her naive, innocent, younger sister but at the same time the whole point was for her to be involved. she couldn't just run off in a little dream world without crime and come back with the intention of getting involved. no if you were in you were in all the way and at the time that had been all maggie wanted.
-----one might think that just giving into maggie would have made her stop, in all likelihood it just may have. had juan just given in when maggie had first started getting on his nerves, had he shipped her off on a mission where she'd get shot at and scared shitless, there might have been a chance that it would have scared maggie straight. depending on how young the impression was made, yeah she may have given up on the business altogether. but now that maggie was older she knew she would have been able to see through any of her father's desperate attempts to scare her straight. she was in it for life now and the only way to turn her away was to put her six feet under. only the cold, clammy hands of death were going to keep maggie from doing this job for one simple reason, she loved this job. the thrill, the danger, the adrenaline rush...it was unlike anything you could ever feel. to have that power and control in your hands was addictive and to know that lives rested in your hands. to other people the fact that life or death lay in the balance might be enough to scare people away, maggie not so much. it was only when her own mortality was involved that she liked to pay close attention. it wasn't that she was cavalier with it all, far from it when you compared maggie's loss record with that of her father's because he could put anyone to shame, but there was a certain risk that just came with this business. if a person couldn't understand that risk or if a family wanted to blame the person in charge, well then they really didn't know how the business worked. regardless of how stupid or how dangerous this line of work might be, there were still people out there who looked for that sense of power and the same kind of thrill maggie looked for. there were still people out there who wanted to be rich and wanted to break the rules and the fact of the matter was that these people signed up for the job. no one ever twisted your arm to get you into the organization. it was something you had to show initiative with and something you had to show you wanted. because once you were dedicated to getting in, you were stuck there for life (or till death) and the right kind of people, the people you wanted on your payroll, understood as much.
-----as of this moment though maggie didn't need the right people so much as she needed the right clothes. the minute she picked up the fact that she had two tails was the moment she really assessed the situation. there was about a fifty-fifty chance that maggie was going to end up ripping this dress either by her own means or by these guys manhandling her. either way she was going to be pissed. this might have been a very anna winston-ish dress to wear but maggie was growing more and more fond of it. she ducked into the ladies room as if she was oblivious to the fact that she was being followed. she stepped into a stall, closing it behind her, and listening as the clack-clack of other women's heels hurried out the door. so her men folk were ballsy enough to just walk right into a women's restroom. easy enough. she kicked off her heels knowing she'd definitely be sterilizing her feet later. she was good, but even maggie corinthos was taking a major risk when she took to whooping ass in four inch heels. she palmed her two knives, keeping them at the ready because she was damn sure she was going to need them. "come out kitty cat." she heard from behind the door, her eyes rolling. well at least this would be an easy fight. she kicked open the door, sending it flying into one of the guy's faces and sending him back against the counter top. she faced off with the other, her every move matching his up until he would lung and she would easily duck out of his way. these goons were probably good for people who weren't fast by any means. maggie of course could dance circles around these bozos. by that time luca had come crashing through the door leaving maggie with only one of the men to face off with. he was on the floor before luca could even finish. "what the hell took you so long!" she yelled over the man's limp body as she slid her knives back into place. "yeah the kitchen has crappy security. follow me."
-----she reached into the stall and grabbed her shoes, slipping them back on before she grabbed luca's hand and opened the bathroom door up a crack. "people are watching the bathroom. you don't think they're stupid enough to fire on us and scare away the money do you?" it was pretty much a rhetorical question but she was in a way looking for an answer. it was more like she had hoped luca could silence her fears. she wasn't afraid of a little gunfire...she just liked to avoid it when at all possible now was one of those moments. the kitchen was only a few feet away so she just decided to go for it. screw coming off inconspicuous. the people they weren't supposed to flag were already onto their game and there was no need to be saving face. it was all the better to just go for it anyways. she didn't even register that she still had a firm grasp of luca's hand until she felt the little tug on her hand as she sprinted off. "keep up!" she said as she pushed through the kitchen doors, hearing the loud pop of gunfire behind them. well she may have been wrong but at least she was faster. haha take that russian mafia. she veered left as soon as she walked through the door, dodging one prep table and instead dashing through the second row. the pots and pans hanging should offer enough cover and sure enough she had guessed right as two men stood at the entrance to the kitchen and shot in their general direction, bullets ricocheting off some of the pans. "well this is fun." maggie said over her shoulder as she dodged a cook who was dropping to the floor in fear. dare she admit to even smiling as she ran, the double doors of the emergency exit in her sights. seconds later she was out the door, luca close on her heels. "get the car." she said as she grabbed some scrapped lead pipes from the alley they stood in and barred the door. "haha yes!" she said with a smirk as she took off down the alley, following luca as he disappeared around the corner in the direction of the parking lot. her feet remained in her heels as she reached the car, sliding into the passenger's side as luca heaved the shift into reverse and tore out of the parking lot like a bat out of hell.

----A LOT OF PEOPLE ASSUMED THAT MEMBERS OF THE mafia were just a bunch of grown men that were trigger-happy. well, that might be true for some of the groups, but fausto always encouraged the minimal use of guns if possible. the giovannis weren't killers. have they taken lives? well, yes, but they were tricky, sneaky business entrepreneurs if you wanted to label them. this was why most giovannis were trained in hand-to-hand combat but also target training just in case. they had to be good at everything. luca would have been one of those trigger-happy men if it wasn't for his uncle. luca was already that aggressive, on-edge, didn't think twice soldier that would rather live by the 'shoot first, ask questions later' motto. every time he had the urge to just pull out his gun and start shooting, he flinched away. this wasn't a time to use it. especially when he was able to take out one russian with his hands and a very hard bathroom wall. "what? how many times have you told me you could handle yourself?" he yelled to her. maybe he shouldn't have been talking to nikolas for so long. but really, he wouldn't have unless he knew maggie could take care of herself, right?
once both of the body guards were taken care of, maggie put her shoes back on and grabbed his hand. she opened the door of the bathroom slightly. "people are watching the bathroom. you don't think they're stupid enough to fire on us and scare away the money do you?" the two guns strapped to the side of his ribs burned white hot against his skin. the people watching the bathroom already knew luca walked in here. and they were probably wondering why their buddies were taking so long. "they're the russians. they don't know proper etiquette for situations like these." because if this happened to the giovannis, they'd just drag the intruders down to the basement and teach them a few lessons. the novikoffs usually didn't have rival groups dropping in on them. this was probably like christmas day for them.
time was definitely not on their side, and before luca could come up with a legitimate plan, maggie was taking off towards the kitchen doors. he heard the first shot that must have just narrowly missed him as they bursted through the kitchen doors. that gave luca permission to pull out one of his guns with his free hand. running and looking for big men in black was a lot harder than it sounded. through pots and pans and chefs making food, they were running in a what seemed like a jungle. luca kept looking over his shoulder and keeping up with maggie as they cruised trying to find the back exit. fausto wasn't going to be happy when luca called him. this was supposed to be just a sit in and observe. how was luca to know someone was going to recognize him? he wasn't that recognizable only being in the business for four years. there were his clients that knew him, then there were the los angeles and valkyrie police officers studying him. but, to the other members of other families, they knew of him, but couldn't match a face with a name. let alone someone he had a run in with other a year ago. with being only two of them, it would be easier to get out of there. given, it would be even easier for luca if it was him, but at least he wasn’t toting around someone who didn’t know their shit. yeah, he would admit to himself now that maybe maggie was actually being useful. he was still concerned for her safety, but as if the bathroom didn’t prove, she could do things fine on her own. he could hear bullets ricocheting off pans that hung over stoves. chefs were ducking for cover and getting out of maggie and luca's way because obviously the shots were aimed at them, so they didn’t want to go anywhere near them.
they both ran out the doors and into an alleyway. luca kept his gun steady, ready for anything that was about to come out of those doors. maggie yelled at him to go get the car. and leave her with a pipe and whoever was following them? yeah, right. then, he thought that there were probably a flock waiting for them in the parking ramp. at least, if this happened to the giovannis, there would be. he sighed and started taking off in the direction he thought he car was in. once he reached the street, he knew exactly where he was and took a left back to the parking ramp. he could hear the click of maggie’s heels behind him. it took him about a minute to get there and when he saw the gleaming sports cars lined up by themselves, it looked eerily creepy. luca halted his running and walked up to the cars slowly. if someone was going to jump out, he was going to be there ready for it. it didn’t make sense. he pulled the keys out of his pocket and auto-unlocked them. luca threw open the door and pointed his gun to the interior of the car. nope. no one. chances were they probably bugged the car so he was gonna have to ditch the car once they got out of the clear. he got in and started the car. it roared to life and luca leaned over and opened the passenger’s door. maggie got in and he wasted no time shifting in reverse and getting the hell out of there.
“we’ve probably been bugged so we’re going to ditch the car at the hotel across the street.” he told her. to anyone else, this was a nice car. it had a big price tag on it and many strived to own a car like this. to the giovannis? they didn’t car. it fit a part, and that part was james winston. they could get twenty more cars like these if they really wanted to. besides, it wasn’t like luca had only brought this one. they still had his own car they had driven to san fransisco with. they’d just take that one back to valkyrie. luca kept looking back in the rear view mirror and so far, no one was even following them. slowly, he was catching his breath. the grip he had on the steering wheel lessened slightly and as he merged into traffic, he eased up on the gas pedal. "that..." he trailed off and took a hand off the wheel to rub his jaw. "was definitely not suppose to happen," he finished, shaking his head. fausto was going to be really pissed. they already had the selwyns to worry about, not to mention every other gang, drug cartel, and mafia this side of the coast. now they would have to watch out for the novikoffs, too?
"you're ok, right?" he asked her, completely slipped his mind that they could have been injured during that escape. like, actually shot but the adrenaline high they were on could have masked it. luca continued to drive, and eventually pulled into a hotel parking lot. it was a hotel that was across the street from where they were staying. luca was hoping the russians either stopped following them, or presumed that maggie and luca skipped town immediately. he put it in park and turned the engine off. waiting for her to get out, he joined her as they walked across the street. "well, it could have been worse."

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, CASINO, DECEMBER 2007 -----this was probably exactly what luca didn't want to happen but quite frankly, maggie could care less. sure she was being shot at, sure she was escaping a mafia who would now be her enemy, sure she was armed with only a few knives. so what? this was everything she'd been hoping for. not necessarily the threat of death, but just being involved. luca probably hadn't had a chance to see it, but maggie had been fighting a smile the entire time she fought off those two guys. she lived for this kind of involvement. it was probably because of some deep rooted abandonment issues with her father. sure juan corinthos wasn't role model material but he was still her father and he still blamed her for something she hadn't done. the man hated her because she was the first child he'd had after his first wife. like that was her fault. if anything he should have blamed sofia, maggie's mother, and maybe he did, but he was also happy to blame the innocent ones mixed up in it all. of course maggie was no where near innocent now, but she had been way back when when she was a child. even then, even as a baby, juan had hated his first daughter. maybe this was his cosmic kind of payback, having the daughter he pushed away all her life come back to make his life miserable. after all she was just returning the favor. he'd spent her entire life trying to drive her away and she was getting back at him now by turning his game on him and slowly taking away the business that he loved. sounded like a win-win for her as long as everything worked out in her favor. as it stood, that idea was a bit of a gamble. maggie wanted to think that she would some day get the opportunity to give her father every last bit of pain that he deserved. it helped in the grand scheme of things to someday hope that she would be able to get just a taste of revenge.
-----it would almost be as enjoyable as this, maybe even more so depending on what exactly she was able to do to her father. needless to say, maggie still was enjoying herself. it wasn't every day that one got to dodge bullets and be one of those kind of people only highlighted in movies. even if it was deadly, it wasn't in maggie's nature to be afraid. this was something tied to the business she always wanted to be a part of and she embraced it. not only that but it was one of the more thrilling adrenaline rushes she'd had in a long time. aside from how luca made her feel on a regular basis, maggie hadn't been doing all the things she used to. selling drugs was something small and nearly insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but it was maggie's only real high. no she didn't do the drugs she sold. maggie was sure to never even touch the stuff. but selling, that small little risk factor, was enough to give her the little jolt that kept life interesting. but that was nothing compared to tonight. it was nothing like feeling that fall in the pit of your stomach when a bullet ricocheted a foot from your head. it was nothing like the thrill of running away from men who both outnumbered you and outgunned you. if they got away from this unscathed it would definitely be the best time maggie had running away from something. did it sound like she was going mad? oh most definitely. even most mobsters didn't enjoy having to outrun bullets. maggie? it was like she craved the danger factor. she was a head case, ha. even staying behind to bar the doors while luca took off for the car was a rush. she was so easy to please. stick her in a dangerous situation and it was like the equivalent of having a kid in a candy store. maggie slid the pipe into place, making sure it was secure before she took off after luca. she could hear loud thuds against the door followed by a few gunshots. still the door held.
-----she hid her smirk from luca as she slid into the passenger's seat, quickly clicking her seat belt into place and luca spun the car around and got the hell out of dodge. it was only in the silence of the car that maggie realized just how much her heart was racing, just how much she was shuddering just from the sheer thrill. "whatever you say." maggie said with a chuckle as luca finally spoke up. maggie was pretty sure luca was giving the russians too much credit. they hadn't expected to be infiltrated and they seemed to be caught enough off guard to shoot in the middle of a crowd of innocents. it was safe to say that they were clueless if not trigger happy. but safety was the number one concern and maggie wasn't worried about surrendering the car. maggie ran a finger through the loose strands of hair, watching as luca calmed. "yeah it wasn't supposed to happen but what other option did we have?" it wasn't like they could have avoided this. the only way would have been to not go which would have equally pissed off fausto. they had to defend themselves. they did what they had to do and if there was a problem with that, well there wasn't much that could have been done about it. maggie looked over at luca as he asked if she was okay. she nodded with a bit of a smile. "i'm better than ok." she stretched out slightly, catching sight of her heels once again. they were quite cute. maybe even anna-enough to keep. after all maggie didn't want to forget her first job. call the shoes a memento or something. it didn't take long to pull into a parking lot and ditch the car. maggie stepped out of the car and headed toward the hotel, luca on her heels a moment later.
-----she peeked over her shoulder at him, that still excited glitter in her eyes. "it didn't seem so bad to me." she danced a few steps away from him, turning to look at him. "hey we escaped without a scratch. smile. it won't kill you." she snickered as she walked into the lobby, crossing it to get to the elevator. they were in their room a few minutes later. as they walked in maggie kicked off her heels, pushing them to the side with her foot. she stretched her arm behind her easily undoing the zipper she'd asked luca to finish for her not all that long ago. she made her way into the bathroom, grabbing a bag from the side chair as she went. if he was looking, luca would have watching the dress fall to the floor just as the bathroom door closed behind her. it didn't take her long to change, pulling the tie out of her hair to let all of her brunette locks dance against her back. she changed into a pair of comfy shorts and a tank top. it wasn't the most conservative of maggie's outfits but it was comfortable and that was all that mattered after tonight. spending the day in a dress and murderous high heels was cause enough to revert back to body-hugging soft cotton. she rinsed off her face, just making herself completely at home. she opened up the door a few moment's later, the dress draped over her arm. "i don't know about you, but i think i enjoyed that." maggie said with a smirk as she dropped the dress and bag into the chair. she wasn't lying. her body felt electrified, more so than usual. she was on an adrenaline high and boy did it feel good. with a contented sigh maggie flopped onto the nearest bed, which of course happened to be the only one in the room. "are we staying for the night or headed straight back?" maggie asked aloud, her eyes drifting shut as she just enjoyed...well everything about the night.

----IT WAS MOMENTS LIKE THESE that had people wanting to join the mafia. the danger, the rush, the fact that you could die at any given moment. it was a sweet seduction that drew people in. little did they know that it wasn't always guns and running. usually when there was guns and running, it meant something went wrong, and you really weren't aiming for something wrong to happen. but luca and maggie had gotten away safely. the electricity was still running through him, however. it always happened like that. after narrowly escaping something that could have killed you. you feel like you could take on the world. it would be hard to wind down because all you waned to do was just do more. run a marathon, get in a fight, anything that would make him still feel like this for at least a little bit longer.
it reminded luca a lot of his first job. as minuscule as it had been. he was with his cousin alberto jr. when luca says it was his "first" job, it was really just the first job he did without any of his uncles being with him. it was he and al, and they both felt like tough guys. their egos didn't really get in the way of their job because they knew they were still barely twenty and had a lot to learn. it was a simple weapons exchange. but once it had been completed, nothing bad happening, it was like al and luca were high on every kind of drug available. they walked away from it as happy as boy scouts. they wanted to do more, win more, be given more responsibility. after one job. fausto loved the enthusiasm, but he always had to control the two boys after a job. months passed and as the jobs became more routine, the more mellow luca had become. but tonight... tonight he had been undercover. maggie was pretending to be his wife, luca was someone else. he hated to admit this but they did make a pretty good team. he had still felt the need to protect her, but they sort of... knew each other at this point. luca's weakness would always trying to be protective.
mona giovanni, luca's mother, always told him he was too protective. i know. luca. protective. but mothers' know best and mona said behind the hard front luca liked to hide behind was a gentle man that didn't want to see people close in his life get hurt. he was close with violet. everyone knew he was the only one that truly knew what happened to violet in the basement. he was admired because he hadn't told anyone. he was godfather to violet's son, rocco. if anyone tried to harm rocco, luca would make them wish they didn't mess with the giovannis. luca was protective of his twin sister, sienna. though he hadn't seen her in a few years, his connections gave him the knowledge of where she was. he didn't know what kind of life she was living and if she was ok. every month, he had been sending money out to the address she was staying in. he didn't know if she was using it, nor did he care. it was being sent out there, and that just gave him piece of mind. now, there was maggie. maggie was going to be his greatest problem. probably because he was now to marry her. luca never pictured what his wife would look like. he knew he would fall in love and get married. eventually. he'd find someone he really liked, really cared for. now, maggie was plopped in his lap and he went from wanted to literally kill her, to really liking her. amd yes, in that way. they had to be more dangerous together and feeling for one another than working together and hating each other. their sexual tension was building up with every time they were together. from their looks, to the subtle touching, the kissing never really helped because it just left them wanting some more.
there had been some close calls. luca didn't know why he stopped them. isn't that what they both wanted? to just rip each other's clothes off and stay in bed for a few hours? to luca, it didn't sound like a bad idea. and now that he was hyped up on adrenaline, he was wondering why he had stopped this previously. as maggie and he got back to the room, he was thinking less of what he was going to tell fausto and more of what he wanted to do with her. it didn't help that on her way to the bathroom, she unzipped her dress, once again exposing her bare back. he watched as the dress hit the floor and the bathroom door closed. she sure liked to tease him, didn't she? luca took off his jacket and tossed it on a chair next to the overnight back he brought with. he removed his guns and unstrapped the holster from his chest. he walked over to the bar and slid the suspenders off his shoulders and let them fall against his legs.
the good thing about the room was that they were on the fiftieth floor with a great view of san fransisco nightlife with a fully stocked bar. sometimes, there were benefits of having his undercover gigs. luca took out a bottle of scotch and poured himself a small drink. he drank a little and swirled the glass with his hand. "i don't know about you, but i think i enjoyed that." luca looked over his shoulder at maggie who came out of the bathroom wearing a tank top and shorts. only she could be just as sexy in comfortable attire as she was in the dress. "i didn't," he said, "we could have died. or worse" yup, luca was always the pessimist. he heard her flop down on the bed. "are we staying for the night or headed straight back?"
luca finished the rest of his drink. setting the empty glass on the bar he crossed the room until he stood at the bed's side. right next to maggie. he outstretched his arm at her. "well, i don't know. it is kind of getting late." when maggie's hand slapped down on his, he pulled her out of bed, pulling her close to him, a smirk on his face. his hand pressed her lower back into his pelvis and pulled some hair out of her face with the other. "i think we should stay the night," luca said pulling her head to meet his. if it was possible he pulled her closer when their lips met. and maybe it was the adrenaline, but luca was on fire. he wanted maggie more than he ever had wanted her.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, CASINO, DECEMBER 2007 -----maggie wasn't completely sure why but she had a bit of a habit of comparing herself to the kind of people she would lump into those "normal" categories. it wasn't like she was hugely abnormal. she had a bit of a flair for the dramatic, she liked to go with her impulses for thrills and get herself into dangerous situations, etc. she was basically the epitome of a life people would want if they were, oh what do you call it, bored with their life. maggie wasn't afraid to live her life on the edge. she wasn't afraid of the danger, the thrill, or any of that. she seemed to thrive on it in fact. she hadn't been this much of a thrill junkie before but really how could she help herself? she'd always been a bit of a thrill seeker but back in tijuana she'd had so many limitations that she'd only done what few things were acceptable enough for her to do. case in point: the drug dealing. maggie was in no way a dealer, not in her opinion. people sold drugs because they wanted to or because they had no other choice, maggie did it to get her foot in the door so she really didn't consider herself to be a full-out dealer. if there was a union, she wouldn't have been a part of it. maggie didn't like dealing. she didn't like being so close to a substance she despised, but in the case of her father dealing drugs was about the only route she could take if she'd wanted anything to do with the corinthos organization. seeing as she really didn't have much else of a choice, maggie had done what she had to do. but give her to option to just go back to dealing when she was faced with this kind of thrill ride and maggie would have laughed in your face before telling you to screw off. this was the kind of heart-pumping thrill she was looking for and best of all she was doing so with someone she was hot for. what was better than that?
-----she seriously doubted that luca was getting as much of a thrill from this as she was. luca had hated the idea of all of this from the very beginning. he'd figured that a teenager on his heels would be nothing more of a liability that got him killed. and who had stayed behind to make sure the russians were barred inside their own underground casino while luca got the head start to the car? honestly maggie really hadn't put so much thought into that one as they'd made it out the emergency door at the back of the kitchen. she hadn't really planned on staying behind or anything like that, it was just one of those ideas that came to her, the ones that seemed good enough to work that she just ran with. and low and behold her idea had worked. they'd got out of there with a weirdly small amount of trouble, yes it had registered to maggie as well. either the russians really hadn't put much thought into security, something she highly doubted, or something was awry. no one had followed them out, nothing had gone boom in the car. it was like there was a second shoe that had forgotten to drop. she certainly hoped that it was just a case of stupidity, but either way, they weren't planning on going back to that car. still maggie couldn't help but laugh at the idiocy there. had she been in charge, or had the giovannis been running that thing, there would have never been an incident like that. hell had the giovannis been running that underground casino, any matter would have been handled quietly, not with an all-out shoot out in the middle of witnesses. the guys in the bathroom, that could have been smart had the guys she was with been a little more, oh i don't know, forceful? a little less stupid? true she'd been slightly outmatched in the beginning but maggie had handled one guy fine on her own. with luca on her heels it really hadn't taken much for two people in a strange environment to gain control. just thinking about it nearly made her giggle.
-----she was slap-happy. drunk on the adrenaline rush. had she or luca been injured it probably would have been a different story but since all was well with the world, maggie hadn't the slightest concern for all of the possible 'what ifs' that could have happened tonight. the fact of the matter was that they were out, they were safe, and the russians were none the wiser about their whereabouts or anything else in particular. they may have been outed within very little time but even fausto would have to admit that they handled themselves well. nobody was coming back in a body bag. maggie would chalk that up to a good night. then again she also didn't come from a family where everything was supposed to go as planned. if the giovannis hadn't noticed, her father was pretty much a train wreck. juan corinthos just didn't know it yet and honestly? at the moment maggie couldn't feel less loyalty to her father if she tried. it was getting to the point where she wasn't even in the least bit concerned with her father or his plans and was just enjoying things. luca had made that a lot easier. sure the idea of them having to wed still loomed over their heads, and maggie could only speak for herself, but it did seem to her as if that cloud was slowly dulling more and more as time passed. they may not have been game to actually get married, but damn it maggie almost looked forward to it at this point. she hadn't realized it before but marrying into the giovannis would prove very useful to her. one, she'd be in with a family she could respect, a family that might give her the opportunity to make use of her talents. two, she would be spiting her father which was in itself one of the sweetest, most joyous feelings she'd ever encountered. and last but not least, there was the prospect of being by luca's side for...well, ever. maggie was still iffy about that last bit but she was liking luca more and more as the days went by. there were worse guys she could be forced to marry right? maybe marrying him wasn't as bad as she'd originally thought.
-----though hanging out tonight in a dress was fun, being a whole other person and all that, when you got down to the nitty gritty of this girl, she was just another girl who liked to get comfortable. though luca had pretty much only seen her in sexy clothes, it wasn't necessarily always maggie. take the first time they'd officially met. maggie had been in a hot pink, short little bandeau number because that was what her father had expected her to wear. juan corinthos was after all nothing more than a sexist pig who wanted to exploit his daughter for nothing more than her looks. in his mind women were supposed to be arm candy and were supposed to dress as such. was that really maggie? well in a sense yes. she liked to be sexy and she had a fetish for exposing skin in all the right places. she liked to be looked at. was that necessarily something she'd wear on a daily basis? 24/7 even? no, of course not. she liked to strip all of that down and just cozy up in a pair of pajamas. she liked to lounge around in an oversize sweat shirt and jeans when she was just around the house. comfort was always number two on her list but after a night like tonight it temporarily moved it's way to number one. she couldn't help but to roll her eyes as luca threw in his little bouts of pessimism. classic luca. "ye of so little faith. you walked away without even the slightest scratch and you talk like you arm's missing." she still chuckled though, feeling the cool fabric of the comforter against her back as she flopped onto the bed. winding down was going to be tough, that much was for sure. being around luca when she felt like this was definitely going to make it harder. sure enough when she opened her eyes, maggie saw him walking over, hand extended. she didn't know what to expect from him, maybe he was going to lecture her again about the dangers of the job or something. reluctantly she heaved her arm up, giving him her hand.
-----of whatever she'd been expecting, what happened next wasn't necessarily the first on the list. she was hefted up to her feet, landing against the brick wall that was luca giovanni. she looked up at him, slightly surprised as he pushed a few stray strands of hair away from her face. then like the cherry on top of one hell of a night, he kissed her, pulling her body against his as he did so. the first thing that came to her dazed mind was "HELL YES!" if this was what it took to get him in the mood than maggie would make threatening him a daily affair. she'd yet to get this much of a reaction out of him before but the one thing that surprised her the most was how unprovoked it was. when she was drunk, maggie had practically begged for it, being the first to kiss him and all that. during the snow storm he'd been trying to ease a bit of the sting from his stupid outburst and though he'd kissed her, it didn't seem to be something he'd just wanted. but tonight? maggie hadn't even hinted toward anything and yet here he was, body pressed to hers, heating her blood to an even higher degree than ever before. with a bit of a smirk she kissed him back with all the force he'd initiated, twisting her feet until his back was to the bed. she pulled back, a glimmer in her eye as she pressed her hands to his chest and pushed, letting him flop back against the bed before she joined him. "keep this up and i'll have to make sure we get shot at more often." she said with a chuckle as she straddled him and leaned in to continue the festival o' fun.

----HIS MOOD WAS ALWAYS TEMPERAMENTAL. luca was aware of that. it was just how it worked. sometimes, well, most of the time, he felt like what was going on between them was wrong. and then, there were those rarities like what was going on right now when he decided to say fuck it. why were they always stopping before things got nice? oh right, it was because of him. well, it was just more difficult for luca because he felt like he couldn't. sure they were suppose to get married and form a union between the giovannis and the corinthos... but even the marriage sounded businesslike to him. like sure, his whole life was about to change but he couldn't mix business with pleasure. it felt sort of like an affair. between him and maggie. it felt weird because both fausto and juan sr. wanted them together. it was probably because they hated each other so much at the start of everything. now, both of their feelings toward the other was changing and it felt like they were cheating themselves. like, they were going back on their words of hatred.
but then, why was it every time they were going to get hot and sweaty, he liked it so much? no woman had ever gotten his heart racing as fast as she did. she always did though. not just with hooking up either. when they fought, when she pissed him off, god. how she could get him so worked up over the stupidest shit. it was unhealthy. how was it possible that maggie could bring out the best and the worst of him. he was all business all the time, he sometimes wanted to kill her, their personalities clashed like the titans. he had no idea how they were making it work living together. sometimes. his loft was always his place. and now, it was invaded by perfume, clothes, and makeup in the bathroom. he'd get jealous if another guy was talking to her, sometimes when he was so pissed at her, part of him just wanted to push her up against a wall and kiss her. these were feelings luca did not understand, or really hadn't ever experienced before. it was strange. he hadn't decided whether he liked it yet, but it was a change.
to his luck, she still wanted him too. that was kind of a relief since they have been doing the hot and cold dance for far too long. maybe it was the adrenaline, maybe it was the almost dying part, but shit. luca's skin was on fire. she turned herself, so much that luca could feel the edge of the bed against the back of his knees. she broke away for a moment, placing her hands on his chest and pushing him. luca fell back on the bed, grinning slightly as maggie told him, "keep this up and i'll have to make sure we get shot at more often." luca sloppily pulled the knot in his tie, trying to loosen it as maggie got on top of him on the bed. forgetting about the tie, he pulled her face closer to him again as they continued to kiss. his hand slipped under her tank top feeling her bare back. it never got old. that feeling. you'd think after the few times he had seen her in her underwear, the excitement would have died down, but no. whether she was wearing a dress, or what she was wearing now, it still made him want her even more than the last time. his other hand was getting tangled in her hair as he tried to pull it out of his eyes. as if he was drunk, he missed her lips and got her jaw. but he didn't care as he kissed her neck, the crook of her neck, and her clavicle.
he stopped for a moment, pulling himself up from the bed, bringing her up with him. he gave her a lopsided grin as he used both of his hands to push her hair out of her face. "you... are so beautiful. just like this," he told her, looking at her in the eyes as he stroked her back. he remembered that his tie was still on, and pulled it over his head as best he could as let it fall over the edge of the bed. he let go of maggie for a moment so he could rush through unbuttoning the white shirt. he caught her lips though while he was doing it. luca was sure he was probably ripping some of the buttons off, but a button down is a button down therefore, easily replaceable. once he successfully undid his shirt he pulled it off him and quickly pulled maggie close to him so there was no space between them. he started kissing her neck and chest again. he hooked his arms around her, one around her back, and one right underneath her butt. for support, because next, luca stood up, maggie still in his arms. he was aiming for the wall, but on the way sort of knocked into one of the dressers. it shook violently and luca saw the vase with flowers in it fall to the ground. heh, there was bound to be causalities, right? "oops," he mumbled as the water spilled from the vase onto the carpet. finally seeing his target luca pushed her against the nearest wall by the bed. last time they were against a wall, maggie nearly broke his nose. oh, good times. going back to her lips, luca slipped both of his hands under her shirt, and gradually started to pull it up. it did feel a little weird trying to take her clothes off since luca had already been in a position (like a few nights ago) when the hard part was already over and she had been already in her underwear. but to him, tonight felt different. at least for him. he wanted this, he wanted her, more than anything at the moment.
